There always was a light music competition. The most beloved pieces
were Changampuzha's "VAZHAKKULA" (and its concocted versions as well)
and Vailoppallie's MAMPAZHAM. As was common of all my contemporaries, I
also knew these two lovely pieces by heart. Ten years of PRAVASAM has
taken its toll. It is after a very long time that I am trying to recall
those lines. What all I remember are the first two lines.
Malayappulayana mazha vanna kalath
Madathin muttathoru vazha nattu......
and
Angana thaimavilninnadhyathe pazham veezhke
Ammathan nethrathilninnthirnnoo chudukanneer........
Both these poems describe the trauma of loss (Like "ROSE BUD"). Can
some one post the remaining lines?

I also remember only the first two lines, but I remember the vAzhakkula lines as:
malayappulayanA mAdathin muTathu
mazhavanna naaLoru vAzha vechu

The English translation of this poem, which can be sung in the
same tune as the original Malayalm version, is quite interesting too.
It goes something like:
"Malaya, the pulayan in front of his little hut,
planted a plantain in rainy season...."

(minor correction follows)
malayappulayanA mAdathin muTathu
mazhavanna naaLoru vAzha nattu
I can recall 4 more lines. Does anyone care to continue?

I think these poems were recited in the "recitation" competetion, and
not in the light music (laLitagAna) competition.

I have recited both of the above in our school competitions and once
in the district level. However, the pravAsam has taken its toll on me
too. Of vAzhakkula, I can only remeber the first two couplets that
were posted here:
malayappulayanA mATattin muT~Tattu
mazhavanna nALoru vAzhanaTTU
manatArilAshakaL pOlatilOrOrO
maratakakkUmpu muLacchuvannU
The story that unfolds in that (reasonably long) poem is quite touching
and tragic indeed. One of the concluding couplets goes:
itinokke pratikAram cheyyataTangumO
patitarE ninngaL tan pinmuRakkAr?
However, I have better luck with mAmpazham. My mother used to sing it
often and I must have known it by heart by the time I was 7 or 8. I think
my recollection of it is mosty correct, though I might have forgotten
some portions or replaced a word with another. This too is a tragic story
of a mother whose toddler son dies...
