I went to the YESUDAS CONCERT in DC (yeah ! drove 4 hours from
Princeton to DC !) last Saturday. I guess Satish (U Minn) was right in calling
me a star struck fan because I knew for a fact that the concert was a
Malayalam/Tamil film song concert and most of his songs I have listened
to are hindi film songs, classical performances and devotional tapes in
Sanskrit (Geeta, Gayatri and some others) and Malayalam (Ayyapa and
Guruvayoorappa tapes). But music should not be bound by language barriers..
not when you have badly flipped for a singer like I have.
The last Yesudas concert I had been to was in Rutgers and that
was mainly a hindi film song concert. If that was an experience of a
life time, this time was only much better. I am not sure how I truly enjoyed
myself without having listened to most of the songs earlier. The guy is not a
good live-performer, he is a great live-performer.
He was singing with his Tarangini orchestra (Tarangini is his
own music company which releases a lot of classical and devotional
tapes). Also the singer Sujatha was accompanying the group (I understand
that she's rated pretty highly in the South !).
I, being a enthu fan, noted down most of the songs that he sung
in the concert. I might have gotten most of the words wrong, but you
have to give me a break because I had not heared most of the songs that
he sung and some of the words did not make too much sense to me.
I'd really like it if someone can figure out the MOVIE NAME AND OTHER
DETAILS OF THE SONGS that I have listed below. I missed the first
song of the concert due to a traffic jam on 95..
2. Jagadambike mugambike
A nice and smooth devotional song
3. Kanavare Kalyanam
A song with lots of highs and lows
4. Salatulla-Salamanna anathulla
This song had a lot of urdu words in
it !... a fast number
At this point of the concert, the guy paused for a while to speak
about the concert being dedicated to people of all religions and
nationality. He seemed disturbed about the ashanti created in people's
minds due to all the communal shit going on in India. He went to say
something about the universality of religions. At this point, I
got up and started yelling "Wah ! Wah ! Wah ! Kya bole hain yaar ... "
to see the public all zapped by my shouting (no ! I was not drunk :-) but
I was high).
5. Nee madhu pagathu malachoria (prob. spelling all wrong) .. also
includes the words "anuraga paurnami"
The music of this song is by Usha Khanna
6. Ammave vanankathu (sp?) uyir illaye
7. Tumbli penne va va
This was sung with Sujatha and the guy who played
the flute for the tarangini orchestra... song with a nice active beat
The song starts with a nice alaap by the flutist. )
8. Sujatha solo ... I did not bother to note down the song !
9. His son Vijay Yesudas (who's only 14) accompanied him in the next
song... The younger Yesudas obviously has a long way to
go before he sings with his dad on stage.. I guess I am being harsh on
the kid... but can't help giving my honest impression. The song went
something like :
Kattu Kulla... (sorry ... very little info) .. very high paced
song
10. A very slow number ...
Alliyavalim kada
11. From the movie Johnny Walker ...
Shantame Raatri
12. One heck of a semi-classical-song from the movie "His Highness,
Abdullah"... the song starts with a long and pretty aalap giving a
glimpse of the artist's classical repertoire. The song has major highs
and lows and surely would rate up there in Pradeep Dubey's list of "how
high is high" .. Truly great song.
13. Daivan gandhame (sp ?)
14. A solo by Vijay Yesudas ... I got a short nap.
15. A song with Sujatha with a great flow.. very catchy tune ...
Azhagiye....the movie is Ambali
16. I did not note this song down .. too bad .. it was a song with an
excellent beat ... like a quawaali
17. Nice song ...
Adhishaya ragam
Apoorva ragam
18. Gori tera gaon... Chitchor, AAAAAwesome
19. Semiclassical tune with Sujatha and Vijay Yesudas
Endal nenjai
20. Sujatha solo ... zzzzzz...
21. Soothing song ...
Yende swapnathil thamora preethe..
22. Ka karoon sajani ... Swami
23. Pretty lousy song with Sujatha, Vijay and the flutist...
Chamba Kurunda
24. Song wit a great start (flute plays for a while before he starts)
Pathiratiri vaniratri onamaniya tiruvonamayira (help ! sp !!!)
Very pleasing tone.
*********************************
25. ONE GREAT GREAT SONG ........ by far the best song of the evening..
*********************************
from the movie Bharatam....
"Ramatha...."
Very pleasing semiclassical tune which finally tails off with
him crying out ..
"Ye Ramaa, Ye Ramaa... "
He has touched major highs in this song. BTW Yesudas got a
national award for this song (last year) .. no surprises here !!
26. Song with the flutist and Sujatha .. Chinna Chinna rojai..
27. A below average song from the movie Karamchand.. which goes like
Dil bhar jane (no ! this not a hindi song)
28. Good song..
Sanyasini....
29. Olathuthu... (help ! sp ?)
30. From the movie Sargam with Sujatha .. excellent teacher-student
aalap in this song which goes like
Pachollu (????)
31. Sujatha ... a nice solo from the film Sindhu Bhairavi..
32. A pretty noisy song from the movie sung with the flutist ...
Thanna na na
33. A song with a great start ..
Nannai varait padamin (sp ???) has other repeating word "Pere
cholli ... etc. "
34. I did not really care for the last song of the concert because it
was too noisy for my taste. Oh well, the party was ending.
I noted in this concert that Yesudas is far from defined in terms of
the kinds of songs he sings in the South as opposed to Hindi film songs
where he was better known for his soft, smoothly flowing tunes.
It's a pity he opts not to sing in Hindi films any more !
On the whole a very enjoyable concert inspite of driving all the way
from Princeton to DC and back, having to put up with a drunk hitchhiker from
Baltimore to Philadelphia, driving through downtown Philly to drop
him off and sleeping at 4.00 am that night :-) :-).

Steve Young rolls to the right, connects with Jerry Rice who's going up
the middle .. he is going .. going ALL THE WAY ... 80 yard pass TD 49ers ...
HEY !!!! FOOTBALL IS BACK .. WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

movie "Manavaatti". His opening song always!!!!!!

"Nee madhu pagaru, malarchoriyu, anuraage powrnamiye" happens to be one of
my favorite songs. Unfortunately, right now I am unable to recall the
details.

This I think is a tamil song that I think Yesudas likes a lot coz he
seems to sing that at most concerts.

The song is Thumbee Penne vaa vaa
Chithram : Dhruvam
I am surprised that the song was sung by the flutist since the original
was sung by Yesudas with Chithra.

Maybe "Aantholanam" originally sung with Chithra
In the beginning the teacher tells the student
"Kutti,...nirthi, nirthi paadu. Annaalae bhaavam varu"
Rachana : Yousaf Ali Kacheri
Sangeetham : Ravi(Bombay)

Probably was his curtain closing song "Vishwanaadhan, Vayla vennoe?,
Maadimayla, maadikotti........"
With regards to the message re: the high price for the tickets to the
concert, I certainly can see justification in the pricing. Organising
and actually holding the performance has a lot of expenses which the
organisers have to meet. In addition to the artiste's fee, expenses
include auditorium rental, advertising(posters, flyers, ads in papers),
ticket printing, accomodation and meals for the artistes, travel
expenses, sound system rental, special lighting needs etc.....Last year,
I was in charge of a musical nite held here with UnniMenon, Ranjini
Menon and Vaisali Suparna and we just managed to break even. In
addition, arrangements have to be started well in advance and there is
alot of work that has to be put into it.
Even after all the hard work that is put in by the organisers to entertain
the local community, there will be people who are just not completely
satisfied and there will be a lot of "Kuttam Parachil". Only people
who are interested need buy the tickets to go see the concert.
Later,
Suresh.
