There are two kinds of geerakam, one put in the payasam (we call it
cheru geerakam) and one put in the curry... I think Jeera in Hindi,
is the same as cheru geerakam...but I am not sure...
------------------------------------------------------------------
Talking of names, I just remember something..
It happened two years before...Me and my brohter went to a North Indian
store...Our main job is comment everything we see the way...We want to buy
some kariveppila (curry leaves)...and we can't find it ...so we asked the
store person (an old punjabi guy)...he brought some very dried and old curry
leaves...
Then I said to my brother "Eee karikallaYitt veruthe enthina
curry kallayunne"..then my brother said, "Ithe athathinte (by christian
believe atham is the first person in the earth) kalatheYayirikum..."
Then the guy replied in malayalam "karikala pole YirikuKayanneKilum, ithine
nalla ruchiyunndeu"...
We didn't know that he know malayalam...

Turmeric powder MANJA(L) PODI Haldi
Cumin seeds Perum geerakam Jeera
Mustard seeds Kaduku SARSOON (Sp. ?)
"Sarsoo ka saag aur makki ka roti !" - ubiquitous Punjabi fare. It is the
staff of life for the Punjabi truck drivers. "Makki ka roti" is a sort
of chappathi made out of cholam.
Fenugreek Seeds ULUVA
Corriander Powder MALLI PODI DHANIA
Kokum ?!
CLOVES(?) Grambu LAVANG
Karuva
CARDAMOM Eleka ELAICHI
Black pepper Kurumulaku KALI MIRCH
Karuveppila KADI PATHA
CORIANDER POWDER Mally poddy DHANIA
CILANTROS (Sp ?) Malliyila KOTHMEL

Some additions....
SESAME SEEDS ELLU
ASAFOETIDA KAAYAM
NUTMEG JAATHIKKA (not sure of that )
SAFFRON KUMKUMAPPOO...
And what is kunkumappoo doing in the list of spices ?...Well, it used
to be a very "prestigious" ingredient to many dishes !
....the idea being to show people that you can
afford it ! I don't think it has any taste to speak of, but I know that
it used to be added to Paalpaayasam to give it a rosy tint..and that
tint testied to the power of your wallet !

I'll give it another try soon when I get hold of
my recipe book I got with my 'Prestige' pressure
cooker. It has the same recipes in all the three
languages.
