I have been a great fan of Mohanlal - his portrayal of the common man
most closely to RK Laxman's character in `You Said It' is what which merits mention. He can portray
the meandering life of an average man, the typical underdog who succumbs
to the tides of problems, and in many cases the ending is not the 'filmi'
closing, which is seen in a typical hindi movie, on the contrary a more realistic end as is in true life. Probably this is the edge
which Mal. movies have over their counterparts in other languages -
simple settings, avoiding flamboyant lifestyles, the average man and how
he trudges in a typical veedu made of 'oodu'.

Actually, I was interested in starting a discussion in the net on some of
the memorable dialogues which Mohanlal has delivered in his hit moveis.
Seeing some selected excerpts of his movies in a video cassette gave birth to this idea. I know that there are a good lot of folk out there who are Lal's fans .

Personally, some of his best movies which I can recall off hand are:

Nadodi Kaatu, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Sanmanas ullavarka Samaadhanam,
Aryan, Varavelpu, Dasharatham, Kilukkam, Namaku parkan munthiri thopangal,
Chitram, Bharatham, His Highness Abdulla, ..

Does anybody out there remember the dialogues in Sanmanas ullavarka Samaadhanam, Aryan, Kilukkam? It is worth repeating I guess.

Lal is not just a good actor, he has a good sense of classical music. This
is very clear in the scenes in Chitram, HHA, Bharatham, - the fluidity of his
lip movement with the swarams is so obvious that is a rare trait
As for that matter, Nedumudi can act playing a mridangam so well that it looks
as if he is really playing it.

To all Lal fans out there - could you add some more info on Lal - how he started
his career, his best performance, etc. Another big hero I admire and respect is our man - KJ Yesudas, pride of Kerala - we can discuss KJY sometime else.

The views expressed are purely my own and I hope it won't create a flame in a ack I hope...

Sincerely,
Jay

I'm a great fan of Mohanlal too. I particularly like his comedies.

The movies I like (pardon my transliteration. I understand Malayalam
much better than I speak it, and that will be reflected here):
1. Mazha peyunnu, madhalam kotunnu
2. Nadodikattu.. I also liked the Texan outfit in it's sequel, Pattanapravesam.
3. Chitram (very beautiful movie, this one)
4. Hey, auto
5. Mukundetta, Sumitra vilikunnu

The first movie is a hilarious one, especially if you don't want to
think too much while watching a movie. There is one dialogue (more like a
monologue) by Mohanlal when he is asked by Srinivasan (who has changed his
name to M.A. Dhawan from Madhavan):
"How many miles from Washington, D.C. to Miami Beach?"
"Kilometres and kilometres of the degradation..."
I used to know a little more of the monologue, but have forgotten it now.
Does anybody else remember this?

Actually, Venu DOES play the mridangam ins real life (he's has formal
training rather) & that should help him out with those roles...

Mohan Lal's first movie was "Madras-ile Mon" which starred Ravindran (?)
and Shiela. Mohan Lal acted as a Malaysian friend, who aids Ravindran
in killing Shiela. Of course, his first major role was that of the villian
in "Manjil Virinja Pookkul." I will try & recollect some of his dialogues.

>is our man - KJ Yesudas, pride of Kerala - we can discuss KJY sometime else.

While Yesudas seems to be as prolific as ever with respect to Malayalam
movies, he seems to have lost some of his popularity outside of Kerala.
He seems to be well behind SPB in Tamil & sings almost no Hindi songs
any more (the latest Hindi song by Yesudas I've heard is one from "Meera Ka
Mohan", a duet with Anuradha Paudwal). I guess his tiff with the one
& only Mangeshkar was a major factor. Perhaps he does a few Kannada songs,
but as far as Telugu is concerned, SPB is to Telugu film music, what
Yesudas is to Malayalam.

Yes indeed. Nedumudi Venu not only plays the mridangam, but is a fairly
competent singer also. Not to forget his having been the lead dancer in
Kavalam Narayana Panicker's theatrical ensemble. I remember a very lean
and muscular Nedumudi (how times change :-) setting the stage on fire at
the National Festival of Drama sometime in the late seventies at Fine Arts
Hall, Eranakulam. It was a wonderful festival, with other luminaries like
Vijay Tendulkar, Girish Karnad present with their theatrical troupes.

Any idea if Nedumudi finds time to do theatre these days? And what is
Kavalam up to these days? When I left Kerala, he used to be up in Delhi
most of the time, busy with one Festival of India or the other.

I also remember Nedumudi singing, in a private setting, the wonderful
song which begins like this:

Aalayal thaRa vENam
Aduthor_ambalam vENam
Aalinnu chERnnoru KuLavum vENam

KuLathil chenthAmara vENam
KuLichu_chenn_akam pookan chandanam vENam...

.................................

MangAttachan_upayam nallU
Mangalyathinu SwarNE nallU
MangAthe_yirippAn nilaviLakku nallU...

Aalayal thaRa vENam...

I've probably done a bad job transliterating, but I would be grateful if
someone can post the full lyrics.

One very famous dialogue from Sanmanas:

Nokele!Nokele! Njan anakadu dehichi pogum.

Most of the movies mentioned so far have been the ones which
came out after Mohanlal arose to stardom. One of the earlier
movies which was equally hilarious was 'Poochekoru Mookuthi'
in which Mohanlal played supporting actor to then stars Shankar
and Menaka.

'Thalavatam' was another great movie.

The recent Lal movies have been more artsy than commercial.

One of Lal's worst dialogues:

'Oru pakshe avanu wattakum, he is a psychic.' Referring to star
Ganesh in one movie(do not know name).

All of us know Wattu=Psycho not psychic.

A famous dialogue by Mohanlal in the movie 'Geetham'. Also
starring Mamooty(the main star in the movie) and Geetha.

'Pedikenda,Peidkenda arum Pedikenda. Njan, kollakarano,
hijacker arum alla. Evende Pappe yanu, his Daddy. Nair
Jagathish Mister, Mister Jagathish Nair.'

One of the really bad Mohanlal movies of recent was
'Rajashilpi'. The only redeeming thing about the movie was
actress Bhanu Priya.

Anyway in the movie, set in olden times, Mohanlal plays a
sculpture carver beard and all!!!
