I had recently been to Bangalore and saw a newly released
and popular kannada film "Nammoora Mandara Hoove" starring
Shivaraj Kumar, Ramesh, Prema. Music by Ileya Raja. Directed
by Desai (I think).

The movie was great. It is shot fully in the scenic Western
Ghats (near Mangalore). The photography (plus the 70mm format)
is really captivating. Infact, I was so enthralled by the scenic
beauty that I planned to go for two days of hiking in the
western ghats with a cousin of mine who is studying in
Mangalore. The plan was scrapped due to shortage of time. But I
digress. I am not sure if this movie would be as appealing if
seen in a video casette.

The music by Ileya Raja is nice. I got the audio tape. Couple of
the songs are good.

The movie is about a village girl (Prema) who is gifted with a
beautiful voice. A boy from this village (Ramesh) loves her
(silently ofcourse). His movie director friend from Bangalore
(Shivraj Kumar) comes to the village to shoot a documentary and
falls in love with the girl too. A triangle thus is
complete. The ending was surprisingly different than a
stereotypical triangle movie.

Shivraj Kumar has acted well and carries his role with poise and
dignity. Ramesh (BTW he was one year my senior at UVCE, 1988
batch) has given a brilliant performance in his light hearted
role.

The surprise for me was the heroine - Prema. She has already
acted in a super hit "Om". I was very impressed with her. She is
very pretty and has acted very well too. And to top itall, she
is a true blue blooded Kannadiga too!

All in all, a very enjoyable movie without any crude vulgarity
or violence.

BTW we saw the movie at Sampige theatre. After we bought the
tickets, we had half an hour to kill before the movie started.
So we walked over to New Krishna Bhavan and had some tiffin. The
food was good as usual. My cousins and my sister watched in awe
as I polished off a Masala Dosa, paani puri and half of my
sister's poori-sagu!

bye now,
Ganesh

Oh! nice description by Ganesh. This really is driving me to watch the
movie 'NAMMOORA MANDHARA HOOVE' for the third time (!) and also have Dosa,
Paani puri.
The whole point is that Kannada movies of late are recovering from their bad
days and inspite of hits from other language movies , films like N M H are
great crowd pullers.
Last year it was OM, Anuraaga sangama and Beladhingala Baale along with
Nishkarsha in '94 which have rejuvenated Kannada filmdom.
We shall wish that the new tribe of directors like Desai, Upendra, Umakanth
etc. will continue to give fine movies to us.

Let's all hope that kannaDa chalanachitra will take the correct path in
the future. Good stories, music, lyrics....especcially our own
nAyakiyaru....no vulgarity etc etc. ramEsh is always a good actor.
Surprised to hear shiva was good too. Let's hope he continues to do
that.
