Nissar Ahmed - a plagiarist?

I had seen the gifted kannada poet Nissar Ahmed on Bangalore Doordarshan
(sometime in 1987) reciting one of his poems which went like this:

"Nimbe gida thumba chenda
nimbeya hannu thumba sihi..."

It was a great song and I enjoyed it immensely. On that particualr
doordarshan show, Nissar Ahmed was credited with having written the song.

Except that there is an identical country song from the 1960's sung by
Trini Lopez which goes like:

"Lemmon tree, leaves are pretty
lemmon flowers are so sweet..."

Since Nissar Ahmed is a pretty young guy (40's maybe), I doubt if he could
have composed the song in the 60's. So it looks like Nissar Ahmed has
plagairised this song!! Either that or Doordarshan bungled and did not
give the credits correctly.

I was surprised to see this subject heading. Somehow I find it difficult
to believe that a poet of Nissar Ahmad's standing would do that. It is also
difficult to believe that Doordarshan would bungle because they would simply
expect a poet of Nissar Ahmad's stature to read his originals, obviously. It is
also possible that he did not know about the song "Lemon tree ....".

At least the casette "Nityotsava" in the 70s made headlines and brought him
to limelight. All the songs in that casette were written by him and all were
very popular. Even at that time I heard that he was already a poet of good
standing. He also was invited as a critic to several well known literary
projects, which is why I would like to give him the benefit of doubt.
He is a Professor in one of the colleges in Mysore and some his students
have told me that he is highly regarded by the academic community and the
students themselves.

While on this, I am rather grieved to see not many from our Malenaadu,
South Canara/north Canara and Dhaarwaada readers are posting articles. It is
this composite that makes Karnataka a land to be in and their contributions
would make this a healthy, lively net for discussion. Could someone throw
light on the lives of singers like BaLappa Hukkeri and Kailasa Kurthukoti etc.
I have really enjoyed his songs "Sangavvakkana Muddina Sosiyu Basuriyaada
suddi, Kaadagichhinange oora thumba Habbithavva suddi" and also "Kalitha
hudugi Kuduri myala bhara bhara hontitta ...". Common guys .. keep the flow.

Isn't possible given that the theme is so commonplace,
Nissar could have independently composed it? And I also
wonder if a relatively well known person like Nissar Ahmed would
put his reputation at stake by calling something his own if it
were not!

If you have the whole poem or can recollect it, even in prose,
why dont you post it? Lets check to see if the theme of the whole
song is plagiarized. As I know it, the song talks about the lemon
fruit being sour. There is a larger theme in the song, and the reference
to the lemon tree is only a similie. Whats the theme of the poem?

The resemblance might be just 'syntactic'- like our first names :-)

This song doesn't sound like a Nissar song. I would check again!

From the two lines of each you have quoted, it is hard to agree with
this conclusion.

Continuing on from where I left yesterday, I checked the cassette again.
It is titled "Subba Bhattara MagaLe", music by C. Aswath.

some of the songs in that collectin are:

1) Bannisale henne, yenendhu bannisali, singer C. Aswath

2) Subbabhattara MagaLe idella nindhe thagoLe, C. Aswath

3) Nimbe gida Nodalu chanda, B. R. Lakshman Rao

4) Jolly Barinalli koothu Poli gelayaru
gopiayannu papa geli maduthiddaru , Chorus

and more,

Since it is a copyrighted material, I doubt about plagialarism of
Laksman Rao.

It was a new wave of bhavageethe created by him. For records there is one
more cassette titled "Aalingana" in which songs follow Hindi Ghazals very
closely. This view is expressed by Srivinvasa Prabhu who has given an
introduction to this cassette. Songs in these are also melodious but not
as humourous as "Subba Bhattara MagaLe" collection.

Hope this clears who the author is.

I just read all the articles about nissar ahmed. The song (poem) is 100%
not by Nissar Ahmed.
^^^^^^
I think it is by B.R. Lakshman Rao. He has also written many songs
in which he says "nanu hodade atanige Kapilana sixer hage, Gavaskarna
boundary hage....."
