Dear Achar,
I have no second thoughts in the admistrative capabilities
of prof.Holla. Also I agree that his tenure brought about a big
change in RVCE in general. However I do not think he was "just"
in his actions. He was a man who was under the control of the
RVCE management and did overlook the academic capabilities of
his students. I strongly believe that the govt quota students
at RVCE were grossly neglected. Only those who had some talents
which brought some medals to the collection in his office were
the pampered ones. Also he was notorious in meeting only those
influential people who brought in money and fame to the college.
Not to forget the famous issue which brought him into light
in the local newspapers. He was supposed to have been involved
in a examination malpractice wherein answer papers were exchanged.
As far as I remember the affected student committed suicide.
When this incident occured he vanished into thin air for almost
a week during which it is beleived that the trust paid heavily
to get the newspapers shut their mouth. He should have retired
then I feel. Imagine the plight of the suffering parents of the
dead student.
Another incident worth mentioning is when a student
in EE died by drowning in a freak accident at Goa in 89-90.
He calmly announced in the college that the college had nothing
to do with the incident other than mourn for him. Instead he should
have stopped this bogus industrial tours or try to make them
worthwhile in future. I agree that the fault may have been
with the affected student or it may have been a totally
accidental case.....I mean rare case. But the greatness of
a head of a institution lies in accepting the truth rather
than cover things up.
Holla may have done more good things in life than
his misdeeds, but unfortunately a man in this society will always be
remembered for his misdeeds. Nevertheless, I will remain a
proud RVCEian.

Dinesh, this is a very unfortunate posting from you and I simply
don't know what prompted you to do this. Let me briefly tell in
one line that how much ever a man does good, one can always find
hundreds of faults in that. All depends on the way one looks at it.
Name me one principal in our universities who had free hand to deal
at his complete liberty. Holla was bound to be under the control
of RV trust as he was a principal in an institution under the RV trust.
Regarding his neglecting academic capabilities of his students,
I can only tell you to compare the current RV standards with those
of early eighties. I wonder that how you can make a statement
that Govt quota students are grossly neglected...... I myself,
was a govt quota student. I would without any hesitation tell
that I would not have enjoyed the facilities and the encouragement
that I got at RV, at any other institution in Bangalore University.
Holla introduced the scheme of awarding the toppers in all the branches
with some attractive cash prizes. I suppose you also have won the
same many times.... I have ample examples of Holla helping deserving
students at their critical times. In fact he changed the goonda
image of RVCE to today's most decent insttution in Bangalore university.
Don't you agree that the examinations are conducted in a very strict
environment at RVCE today, unlike at other colleges in Bangalore univ.
:Only those talents which brought some medals to the collection in his
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
:office were the pampered ones.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It would be better if you tell that he was full of encouragement
to those talented ones, to excel in their area of activity.
Didn't you feel proud to watch RV lad ANIL KUMBLE striking againist
South Africa so wonderfully.....?? Didn't you feel proud when five
of RV boys played for Bangalore univ cricket team and three were named
for the Karnataka Ranaji cricket team at the same time .....!! Didn't you
feel proud while RV team marched ahead to the finals of National level
quiz competition.... How did you feel when a RV boy, CHETAN BABBUR
represented the Indian team in Table Tennis contests..... Was it a small
thing for a college to have 4 basket ball players in its university
team....?? Was it not a matter of pride to see RV cultural activities
team bagging trophies after trophies in most of the state/university
cultural contests?? Tell me which other institution in Karnataka has
excelled so well in these fronts..... He was also instrumental in
holding the annual convention of computer society of India, state
level Engineering institutions exhibitions.... at RVCE. Didn't you
share the pride when RV bagged awards for the maximum blood donation
for three consecutive years....!! Name me one engineering college
which took part in the ambitious program of govt of India's MPFL program.
(Mass Functional Program for Literacy to drive out illiteracy).
But RV took part in this also, and that too very effectively...
Don't you feel that Holla deserves credit for all these things?
Looking at the above RV achievements, it wouldn't be wrong if
I tell that Holla was right in giving the much needed inspirations....
It is same we people who make the same old comment that why the
hell India couldn't win even a single medal in Olympics.... why the
hell India is loosing to Pakistan every time in Hockey/cricket matches...
Why the hell India couldn't produce a good athlete..... Why the hell
India is so poor in Tennis/TT games.......... And it is same we people
now are making this such a sad comment that "he was only pampering those
who have talents....", about a person who was instrumental in RV's
contributing to so many games at the international level.... Nothing
can be ironic or sad than this. This is where the attitude and how one
looks at the matter comes into picture..... We better grow up, at least
to recognize the genuine services to this societey....
:Also he was notorious in meeting only those
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
: influential people who brought in money and fame to the college.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Can you name even one principal in Bangalore university who
was availble to students as free as Holla.....!! As I mentioned
in earlier posting, students even used to disturb him even during
the midnight, for many reasons. Any student could go to his chamber,
if he were free... Of course he was very strict in outrightly rejecting
the pleas for currying the favor... Was it his fault?

Don't make allegations in the air or do you have the proof that

his guiltiness. You were a RV student at that time. DID YOU EVER REGISTER A
TOKEN OF YOUR PROTEST AT THAT TIME? Then why are you making this public
allegation now, out of air...???

What do you mean here covering up ? Do you know that Holla
was a strong advocator for the removal of Industrial tours
component in the evaluation system of Mech engg and other branches in
Bangalore university ? It was an essential comoponent of the system
and Holla couldn't have intervened. If the students even at the age
of 22 wants to freak out in the name of academic tour I suppose
even you cann't help for this if you were the head. It is ridiculous
to blame Holla for this. After his strict instructions to all the
departments, the tours other than the essential industrial tours,
by other departments were denied. Even then the students used to go
on some un-official tours, and also they used to even get some instructors
to along with them(otherwise the parents wouldn't allow their wards).

Dinesh, I never thought that your posting would elicit such a long
rejoinder from me. It hardly matters for me whether Holla is recognized
because of remarkable achievements or because of some minor pitfalls
during his career. I remeber a good saying in Kannda,
"Ellara Maneya Dosenoo Toothe....". It would be better to all of us,

the taste of the same.......
Kindly don't mean any offense in my reply. Let us desist from posting
anything that spoils the reputation of our alma-mater. If we cann't
contribute any good to the same, at least, let us not spoil it.

Dinesha,
I think you got too excited over Mr. Holla. It is very hard to know
what happened in the suicide case; rumours get exaggerated
exponentially :-)
But, definitely his response to the accident was the most logical
(and not too difficult) anyone could have taken. The industrial
tours, even though grossly inadequate were probably the best of
the 4 years of engg education considering a lot of (~70%) of
just-about-to-graduate engg students have no clue or concept of
what engineering is all about.
just my 3.14 cents worth.
Cheers!
Balu
PS: I am no fan of Holla.

The judicial system in india is one of the worlds most

I personally do not have the resources to do an extensive

Secondly, making a formal protest in a private college
