Priya Kannadigare,

After a long time I saw one of my favourite kannada film.. Nagarahavu!
I have really lost count of how many times I have seen this movie.
Everytime I see it I am just amazed by the performance of Ashwath as
"Chamayya Meshtru".... Even today, after all these years I still
believe that Ashwath deserved National Award, but he did'nt get it.
No matter what... in my book... he's one of the best actors that
kannadigas have had the good fortune of watching... Take care...

Last year "SUDHA" kannada weekly has started bringing something like
"life and times" of different famous kannada actors/actresses, one of them was
Ashwath's life story, there has mentioned about, how he got into film, he has
specifically mentioned about "Nagarahavu"'s Meshtru role, he has mentioned about
his dog which he loved most and how it died, he has recollected so many things
about that dog and his/family affection towards it(I do remember about
Dr Gopalkrishna Adiga, Adiga had a dog called 'Narasimha' which was so
affection to him, after its death, Adiga wrote so many poems in the memory of it)

In Mysore I had so many opportunity to see Ashwath, he is staying in
SaraswathiPuram Mysore, seen him during morning walk, shopping on SayyajiRao
Road, in Banks, in Premier studio, very soft spoken person.

You are absolutely right. That way we should have got lots of National
awards in Music also. Janaki deserved NA for "Yava janmadha maithri..",
"Panchama vedha..", "Bharatha bhushira..", "Dhoni sagali.." etc etc
She should have got ATLEAST once. Puttanna Kanagal deserved NA for direction
in many occasions. Any comments?

You are 100% correct. Ashwath stands as a giant among a pack of
amateurish actors today. BTW, has he got any award at all for acting ?
I am not talking about Rajyotsava award which even I can get if I have
the right connections.

I am sorry to say that I haven't seen a kannada movie in nearly 15
years! But I remembered a movie where Ashwath was Rajkumar's father
and gets accused falsely of a murder. I saw this movie in Davangere
and the ending was that Ashwath gets hanged and Rajkumar rushes in
with the proof of his innocence seconds after the hanging is carried
out. I saw the same movie in Dharwad after a few weeks and the ending
was changed and Rajkumar manages to save Ashwath. I can't remember the
name of the movie but it was a very long time ago (circa 1976).

Does anyone know about the movie I am talking about? I really liked
Ashwath in all the movies I saw and yes, Naagarhavu was a real treat.

Reminiscing,

Raghu

Very very true.... what a versatile actor...
i believe he SHOULD have got the National Award..
just yesterday i saw "Naa Ninna Bidalaare" *ing Anantnag & Lakshmi
and the actor i appreciated most was Ashwat (Anantnag's father in this movie)
i would rate him very very high in my favourite actors list...

I think the movie you are talking about is "BiDugaDe". If I remember
right, when the ending was changed, the title of the movie also
had to be changed from "BiDugaDe ?" (with the question mark) to
"BiDugaDe" (without the question mark).

"Bidugade" is the name of the movie. I remember the change of the
story in the end was due to the sensitivity of the issue, i.e... an
innocent man under false accusations loses his life and the justice
system fails!

As a matter of fact Mr. Ashwath even in this communication age prefers to
commute in " Mysore Jataka-Gadi ". As a resident of Saraswathipuram, Mysore
whenever I saw him he is either on his morning/evening walk or on Jataka-Gadi.
I really wanted to ask him about that but I never had a chance. His son also
started acting in Kannada movies and he gave a pretty decent performance in
a recent hit movie (I dont remember the name of the movie but it was novel
written by "Triveni") but strictly not to be compared with his Father.

I recently read his life story in SUDHA where he mentions that he has got a
National award. Will try to find out the movie name. I liked his acting in
soooooo many movies like Ranadhira kantirava, Eradu rekhegalu, Upasane,
Gejje pooje, Shubha Mangala, Ms Leelavathi and in most of the Annavra movies.
He is a hero in Namma Makkalu I guess. Villain in Janma Rahasya. Some old
movies with Aswath_Pandaribhayi, Aswath-Leelavathi/Aadvani Lakshi are treat
to watch.
Yesterday I watched CBI Vijay (*ing Prabhakar, Chandrika, Ramesh) on
"Dhurdarshan!". One can "Core dump" this without hesitation. "Shh..!"
(starring Kumar Govind, Kashinath) is doing well. Not a bad movie. Bit
noisy and Aparichitha type. Unnecessary Double meaning dialogues here and
there. But NODABLE!
"Nishkarsha" (*ing Vishnu, Ananth) is also doing well. Die hard I type.
Haven't seen yet.
Annavra recent movie "Oda huttidhavaru" (with Ambarish) is to be released
soon. K.V. Jayaram's Ranjitha was a decent HIT and it has been selected
for Calcutta film festival. I didn't see this fearing GOLU!! It had 100%
Tax free
Thats all for now

Yesterday, we saw a kannada movie that is relatively new. Title was 'Ebbaru hendara muddina police'. The title itself sounded awful, that I did not want to get it. But, I was told it is one of the better movies available on video in New York.
So we watched it. Slap stick comedy about a police with two wives.
But, the best thing about the movie was that the print was reasonably good. I would not mind paying more for the videos, if only the print were better.

We get our kannada movies from Suraj Groceries on Main st. Flushing. He charges only 50cents per movie per any number of days. Unfortunately, the low price means we never get any cassettes when we want them. The other draw back is that he wants us to buy his groceries. Well, that's no problem except that his stuff is not very good.
