Namaskara, Naanu Illege hosaba. Ee Articallu nama Ee Vedikege seruttade
yendu kondiddene.
Oh it is so tedious to write kannada in English (Kanglish)
Among all the states, culture in India. Three cultures - Kannada, Bengali,
and Marathi have very strong Sugama Sangeetha tradition.
Kannada Sugama Sangeetha was popularised by P.Kalinga Rao. Kalinga Rao
recordings are available. Now, besides Kalinga Rao several of his
contemporaries also contributed a lot in popularising Sugama Sangeetha.
Among them were GANGUBAI HANGAL - Yes, our own Gangubai. Gangubai was
the first singer who composed music and sang "Udayavaagali Namma
Cheluva Kannada Naadu.." in the Belgaum Congress meet when Gandhiji
presided. AMIR BAI KARNATAKI - Hindi playback singer, I think she was
also an actress during the era of Noorjehan, Rajkumari , Zohara Bai
Ambalewali....I was extremely surprised when in 1990 -91 for a very
short period broadcasted very old recordings of Amir Bai's Kannada
songs. Amir Bai as her name suggests is from Karnataka too.
Sohan Kumari, Mohan Kumari who accompanied Kalinga Rao has some soulful
solos to their credit. I also heard a duet sung by - believe it or not-
KRISHNA HANGAL(Gangubai's daughter) and BHIMSEN JOSHI - it was a patriotic
song.
With this 'peethike' I would like to initiate such little known cultural
titbits - exchange.
Another thing I wanted to know, If anybody has recording of Gangubai's
Udayavaagali and any other Kannada songs and also of all the other artists
mentioned above.

- Facts and information about pre Mysore Anathaswamy era Sugama Sangeetha
Singers.

I guess you forgot to mention Jayawanti Devi, who had also sung some good
songs in that era.

Bhimsen Joshi and Krishna Hangal have recorded two duets,

1. "Udayavaagali namma cheluva kannaDanaaDu" - composed by
Huyilagola Narayana Rao
(they have sung this in raaga bhoopaali, jhaptaal)
2. "ondE ondE karnataka ondE", composed by da. ra. Bendre.

These two and several other classic songs were released by HMV
in a two-cassette set titled "cheluva kannaDanaaDu" and
"siri kannaDanaaDu".

How about Kannada Ranga Geethe - I have heard B.JAYAMMA, M.V.MALATHAMMA
MUSURI KRISHNAMURTHY, TIGER VARDACHARI, B.S.RAJIYENGAR . Do you know if any
of their recording is available commercially in India.

Also I wanted to know if there is any recordings of Gangubai (Kannada Songs)
Krishna Hangal, Amirbai and other artistes.

Reply from Dinesh:

Thanks a lot Jayant. It is wonderful to know some body is interested
in Sugama Sangeetha of those days. You have provided a valuable lead. I
called up my people in Bangalore and asked them to scan all the music shops
for this cassette. I look forward to hear these songs once again. Do you
know of any particular place/shop where you spotted these casettes.
What about RangageethE ?

I also wanted to know the name of Muslim Saint poet who wrote
"Kodagana Koli Nungittha.."

- Dinesh.
