namaskara kannadigarige,
seeing somebody post a query about a national award for Dr. Rajkumar,
I thought I can start a discussion on a new thread. Naming some the
kannada movies that won national awards. I am a big fan of old, and semi
old kannada movies. Most of the new ones are horribly bad. Just mentioning
the names of the movies are good enough to repel you from the movie.

I can think of some movies that won national awards. Knowledgeable
movie fans can help us here.

here we go...

Mannina Maga (Dr. Rajkumar, Kalpana)
Sharapanjara (Kalpana, hero=?) (one of my favourite)
Banker Margayya (Lokesh)
Naandi (Dr. Rajkumar, Harini)
School Master
Chandavalliya Thota (Dr. Rajkumar, Udaykumar) (one of my favourite)
Sri Krishna Devaraya (Dr. Rajkumar) - (?)
Bangarada Manushya (Dr. Rajkumar, Bharathi) (one of my favourite)
Nagara Havu (Vishnuvardhan, Arthi, Ashwath) (one of my favourite)
Bangarada Hoovu (Dr. Rajkumar, Kalpana) ------- ?
Shubhamangala (Srinath, Arthi)
Bhoothayyana Maga Ayyu (Vishnuvardhan, Manjula) (one of my favourite)
Thabbaliyu Neenade Magane (Manu, Naseeruddin Shah)
Upasane (Ashwath, Aarthi) ----------------------------- ?
Kasthurinivasa (Dr. Rajkumar, Jayanthi, Ashwath) ----? (one of my favourite)
(one of Dr. Rajkumar's best acting in this movie, fantastic songs-must see)

Mysore Mallige (C. Ashwath got the award 1992)
Udayaraga (Dr. Rajkumar, Udaykumar, Bharathi or Jayanthi, Bheemsen Joshi songs)
Hamsaraga (name?,) (Anantnag, about carnatic music maestro who cuts his tounge)

I am not able to recollect off hand. I am sure there are people who can
add to the list and remove some if I am wrong.

This is making be home sick.

If I can recall correctly, Bhootayya was played by M.P.Shankar and
Ayyu was played by Lokesh.

Most of the above are from the 'popular' genre and won either the Filmfare
awards or the "best regional film" awards (I could be wrong about Chandavalliya
Thota tho'). Many Kannada films won the national "Best film" awards as well as
awards for best actor/actress, director etc. Some of them :

Vamshavriksha (Based on SL Bhyrappa's novel - V'Wardhan's first film??)
Chomana Dudi (Shivarama Karanth's novel)
Kaadu (Krishna Alanahalli's novel)
Kakana Kote (loosely based on Masti's novel/poem)
Ondaanondu Kaaladalli (Shankar Nag won the best actor award at a major European
film festival - was it Venice?)
Tabarana Kathe (Poornachandra TEjaswi novel - Charu Hasan - best actor)
Kaadu Kudure (natn'l best singer - Shimoga Subbanna)
Shankaracharya (not Strictly Kannada but directed by our "own" GV Iyer)

The list goes on ....

Of course not all of the above are "old" but the standards they atta-
ined in terms cinematic quality and as compelling human dramas are timeless.
Good topic to reminesce tho'

You are correct about that. The producers/directors seem to have run
out of imagination even in selecting the names of the movies. In most
of the cases, the title is a good indication of how much "Maaramaari"
and how much obscenity the movie contains. Perhaps we should be grateful
to the producers/directors for this :-)

Btw, it would be amusing to just list the kind of movie titles we see
nowadays. Anybody willing ?

Right now, most of the movies being shown back home would make
*me* feel sick :-) What we want is the ability to travel in space
*and* time. At will :-) :-) Only then would we be pleased!

Friends,

After seeing the list of films above I could'nt work for around
half an hour as I sat reminiscing. I really never gave a serious
thought about these as long as I was in Blore. Songs from these
films were a regular fare on Vividh Bharati in the mornings. How I
miss them here !!

If you observe the list, most of the films are Dr.Raj films and
most of them have one thing in common -- the golden voice of one
and only PB Srinivas.

It is a sheer delight and almost a spiritual experience to listen
to his sentimental songs. I particularly remember the "aadisi nodu"
song from the exquisite Kasturi nivasa. The tragic version of the
song never fails to really move me.

I also remember the "baare baare" song from Nagara havu. As usual,
Puttanna Kanagals picturization is absolutely breathtaking and the
song simply mind blowing.

I think it is really a tragedy that PB is now relegated to singing
one or two stanzas of shloka at the beginning of a movie when a Gods
portrait is being shown. We have really mistreated one of the richest
voices in the kannada filmdom.

How about the "Nee bandhu ninthaaga ninthu nee nakkaaga... " from
the same film ? Sung by PB and accompanied by the pleasantly nasal
voice of P. Susheela.

PB has said in one of his recent interviews that during the good old
days, music was full of *violins* and added that today's music seems
to be full of *violence* instead :-) How true it is!

If I remember right, the "Torino" ad song ("KuDiyutha KuDiyutha paravashavoo...)
was sung by PB after he was completely neglected by the film industry.
It was very sad to see such a thing happen.

The correct name of the movie with Rajkumar & Bheemsen
Joshi songs is "SandhyaRaaga" and not "Udayaraga".

Also the movie where Anantnag cuts off his tongue is
"HamsaGeete" - not "Hamsaraga".

Also, did you know that P.B. Srinivas sang Urdu songs in
Pakistan, and the organisers, exalted by his singing, named him
"Srinivas Khan"?

One of my favourite P.B. songs is "Binkada Singari" from
the movie "KanyaRatna" starring Rajkumar, Leelavathi.

I recently visited Bangalore (you might remember my bitch about how
it's gone to the dogs). Anyway, my brother got hold of a compilation of
songs from this era and the nostalgia of hearing them again after so
many years completely overwhelmed me. Mind you, I was not one of those
Rajkumar Bhaktas (like one of my cousins who saw Bangarada Manushya a
100 times) and my interests were more into Western rock and pop than
Kannada film songs even then but constantly hearing it at home grew upon
me I guess (to borrow a phrase, you might take a boy out of Kannada,
but you cannot take Kannada out of a boy :-)).

One song that comes to mind is "Panchama Veda, Premada Nada" from
Gejje Pooje, I believe. Absolutely beautiful rendition by P.B.. And
another was "Balu aparoopa namjodi, yentha kacherigu naav ready" where
he sings a duet.

I think his career took a nosedive when Rajkumar started singing his
own songs. And at about this time, S.P. started making it big in Kannada
films. However, he used to sing in Telugu and I have also heard a song
of his in Tulu. I wonder how this part of his career went?

I have always wondered about the meaning of this song
(Kanagal Prabhakara Shastry?). Is it that the panchama veda
is the premada nada (what is `premada nada' anyway?!), I don't
know what "(pranayada sa ri ga ma) bhavananda" means either ....
some poetics beyond ordinary mortals, I guess.

I was not a (commercial) kannada movie, commercial kannada movie
songs person. I have hardly seen twenty Dr Raj Kumar movies in
all - most of them older ones and may be two or three times that
many commercial kannada movies. But here are the ones that come
to my mind right now (by the way it depends on when you ask me -
with so many to choose from ... however, the first two are most
likely to be on any of my lists!):

1. Bagilanu teredu .... (Bhakta Kanaka Dasa/ M Venkat Raju)
2. Etaneega Vasudevanoa ... (School Master/ T G Lingappa)
3. Vaidehi yenaadaloa ... (Deshavatara / ??)
4. Nee bandu nintaaga ... (Kasturi Nivasa/??)
5. Uttara druvandin ... (Sharapanjara/ ??)
6. Barede neenu .... (Seeta?/ ??)
7. ...

I think this song is also from "Bhakta Kanakadasa" (which btw,
I happened to see in Dharapuram, Tamilnadu, almost 25 years ago.
So please don't blame if I didn't get it right :-) )
