Channel News Asia: Hong Kong Carrier Cathay Pacific in Merger Talks with Air China

On March 16, 2005, Singapore-based Channel News Asia reported that Hong
Kong carrier Cathay Pacific is in talks on a merger deal with Air
China. The report mentioned that the deal will involve Air China
taking over Cathay Pacific in return for Cathay's British parent, Swire
Pacific, to take a large stake in the mainland carrier.

The deal will also fold Dragonair, Hong Kong's second airline, into the
new company.

In spite of the development, International Herald Tribune reported on
the 17th that Swire Pacific, which holds 46.5% in Cathay Pacific, has
ruled out relinquishing control of Cathay Pacific. Read more details
