I was wondering if anyone reading here would know about opportunities for
assistantships, internships or even jobs at Mona Kea. I would be
extremely interested in visiting there and doing some work but do not know
how to procede to investigate opportunities which might exist for me there.
I've just graduated in physics and have specialized in planetary science
and spectroscopy, have a strong background in lasers (including work in
industy R&D) and I would think there would be something going on up
there that could benefit from my skills.
Can anyone point me to in the right direction? Any responses greatly
appreciated.

hi david,
the first thing to do is get the name of the mountain right:
Mauna Kea, not Mona Kea. There are quite a few different
entitities which run telescope on Mauna Kea (and Haleakala,
if you are not particular about that Hawaiian mountain).
You can get the addresses at your local univ. library (there
are books with all institutions related to phys) or on Mosaic
somewhere. Some of the places to look into are (in no particular
order):
U. Hawaii astro dept (there is a Manoa (o'ahu) branch and a hilo (big island)
branch as well as people on the moutain(s)).
Keck Foundation (their main big island office is at Kamuela)
Canada-France-Hawaii telescope organization
James Clerk Maxwell & UK IR telescopes
Gemini (group based in Tucson building a new 8m 'scope)
Subaru (group based in Japan building a new 7.5m 'scope)
All of these groups run one or a couple 'scopes, or (like the last
two) are in the process of building scopes. I occasionally see
engineer, support, and software jobs advertized. Another good
resource is the American Astonomcal Society's Job Register, which
lists many of the available astronomy related jobs. Good luck,
it is pretty competitive.
Or, you could apply to UH astro grad school... (but considering
the market for astro jobs these days, i don't recommend it unless
you really want to do astronomy and are realy talented besides!)
