Homes for the homeless

I recently discovered that Shipping Containers can easily be converted
into homes, condo complexes, etc. Many containers are rusting in the
shipyards. The containers are built strongly and can serve as the
basic structure for homes. Many homeless persons are enterprising and
talented in building trades. Others can be trained as apprentices to
do the work. THe hours worked can be credited as a down payment to
gain priority on the waiting list. This will give the homeless an
important start to be productive and earn equity in their lives.

This only addresses the issue of reducing the construction cost
somewhat. You still have the very basic problem (here in Hawaii) of the
cost of the dirt to stack them on. Not to mention, in whose backyard
would this be acceptable?

It may be prudent not to build many at a single location so as not to
concentrate the site. But Jerry did make the point re heat and humidy
and tents would be better. I recall my swimsuit never did get dry in
Hawai`i.

Matson Shipping Lines could provide a headstart for the Shipping
Container conversion homes/stacked condo project for the homeless. The
containers are now on site and could be relocated to a specific area
on their property. Volunteers could provide their expertise for the
homeless to rebuild the conatiners into living quarters for the
homeless. Enterprising homeless persons could be trained to provide
sweat equity work to gain a preferred position on the waiting list.
Modular kitchens and modular bathrooms could be installed to kickstart
the construction. I look forward to Jerry and Beachbum to provide
their wisdom and expertise to this project. The homeless would be
forever grateful.
