Your "Google reference" sounds like
something old Mrs. Gunderson, the
high school librarian, would have
come up with. It is GEM nowadays,
pugg. GEM (for Google mention)
Take a tip from the king of
cyberpunk.
Further, the only real Googlefight
worth mentioning in Usenet is between
me and Kibo. Right now, "Bill Palmer"
has about 117,000 GEMS and Kibo about
150,000. But don't uncork the
champagne yet, Kibo fans. For one
thing, when you use Kibo's real
name against mine, I blow him off
the net. Further, one of my nicknames,
"wilhelp," has about 60,000 GEMS itself.
My flaming persona, the Flame Giant,
has about 10,000 GEMS. Then if you
start counting all the newsgroups
with my name, and all my famous
written works (such as FACTS IN THE
CASE OF BILL PALMER), with around
1,400 GEM, itself, you begin to see
that Kibo is already badly beaten.
Yes, he still is ahead in his
nickname versus my real name, but
that is really a very narrow
measurement of Usenet popularity.
All you have to do is take a GEM
count on Kibo and you immediately
see where his fans have written his
name dozens of times in one post
to artificially inflate the GEM
count for Kibo. You have to factor
in all the newsgroups, the literary
persona, written works, the nicknames,
etc.
