The Hab

>The Hab
Ok Ihab, don’t be such a grouch !! Here goes....
I’m 37 year old, female, Egyptian by birth and ancestry. My family
moved to Montreal 22 years ago and we’ve been here ever since. I
finished high school here and graduated from McGill University where I
majored in Microbiology and Immunology. Six months after graduation,
I changed careers and became a programmer/analyst. I worked for
several software companies, did the rat-race thing, and traveled
around a fair bit for work. Three years ago, I joined a consulting
company here in Montreal and I’m presently an information systems
consultant specializing in database architecture and client/server
application design. I hardly have to business travel anymore.
Yahooooooooo!!
I’m very sociable, eclectic, intense, analytical, and typically
Egyptian in my passions. I love music above all else and these days I
mostly listen to flamenco, classical, opera, jazz, and of course
traditional Arabic music. Dancing is also high on my list and my
favourites are flamenco, latino and baladi. I read a fair amount,
mostly English literature, philosophy, and once in a while (when I’m
feeling patient because I read very slowly) the odd Egyptian book. I
also like movies especially with great cinematography (I highly
recommend "The English Patient" for those who love desert scenery).
I love to travel while on vacation and I’ve been to Europe many times
but my heart is still in Egypt. Last time I was there was 3.5 years
ago and I almost didn’t come back. It feels like every time I go I
fall further under the spell, and Egypt infuses my soul displacing all
other ambitions. I guess my Egyptianess is coming out of me despite
all my efforts to accept this comfortable Canadian (albeit cold) home
of mine. I’ve been toying with the idea of moving back for a long
time... may be one day....

Well get ready to be bored to death;
I was born 1n 1958 Alexandria. Went to EBS (ElNasr Boys School) Then
medical school, graduated 1981. I worked as a doctor for two years in
ElMadina AlTebia (Mostafa Kamel) Alexandria, then came to the UK, where
I became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1988.
I am married, with one son. I met my wife at Medical school, same year,
I suppose the romance started during the university Aswan trip (Rehlet
Nos ElSannah).
What I believe in:
1. freedom
2. I believe in god, but I have serious problems with all this confusion
caused by religion.
3. I hate nationalism, tribalism, fundamentalism, racism.
4. Egyptians: we are a funny lot, we have this self destructive streak
in our behaviour which seems to stop us from getting forward. we by
nature have this inherent hate and mistrust of authority. best described
by Said Darwish song "Had Allah Ma Beiny we Beinek, gheir Hob El wattan
Ya Hekouma"
5. I forgot to mention I just love to argue.

I am 49 years old. I have a B.Sc. In Electrical Engineering from Cairo U
and an M.Eng. , also, in EE from Concordia U in Montreal. I arrived in
Toronto in May, 1972. After spending six weeks in Toronto, I was able to
get a job in Montreal and moved there.
In 1976, the company I worked for was awarded a contract to supply air
traffic communication equipment to Kuwait. I was appointed the project
engineer and a year later, I went with the installation crew to Kuwait.
After the installation, I stayed there for three years in charge of the
maintenance crew. My boss used to tease me that I was going to marry a
Sheikh's daughter and become the owner of several oil wells. Well, he
was right to a certain extent. I met my wife Susan
in Kuwait. She was teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) at
Kuwait U. Susan is American from the state of Hawaii. She has both her
B.A. and M.A. from the U of Hawaii.
We left Kuwait in the summer of 1980 and settled in DDO, a suburb of
Montreal. Our three children were born in Montreal in 1980, 1982 and
1984. Susan did not work (outside the house), she opted to stay home
with the kids. More about them later.
The reason we left Kuwait and came to Canada was that I had an idea of
developing a computer that one can program in Arabic. It was the dawn of
the microcomputer age and I figured, why not a computer that Arabic
speaking people can program in their own language without having to
learn a foreign language. I was able singlehandedly to finish it. I
designed the hardware and the software. I never had any prior computer
experience. I had not even finished the FORTRAN course for my master's.
I called it ALKHAWAREZMI, in honour of the scientist who invented the
zero.
By the time I finished, I had run out of money and could not market it
properly and it died a natural death. This was a very expensive
education in computer technology. After that, I focused on mostly
software design.
In 1985, I accepted an offer to work for the Boeing Helicopter Company
in Philadelphia. We lived in a furnished apartment in Philadelphia for
three months and then bought a house in the state of Delaware.
My old boss who used to tease me about marrying a Sheikh's daughter, had
moved to Ottawa and opened his own company with another person and asked
me to be his engineering manager and I accepted. I came to Ottawa in
June 1988. The family joined me in Feb. 1989. It took us that long to
sell our house in Delaware.
I did not get along with me old boss and left my engineering manager's
position in 1990 to become self-employed and I love it. Susan teaches
ESL to immigrants and refugees and enjoys it.
As I mentioned before, we have three kids, Hala Kanani, Sara Leilani and
Tarek Kawika.
Hala Kanani (the beautiful in Hawaiian) turned 16 last August. Hala is
obsessed with the Beatles. School projects about the Beatles, Beatles
CDs, Beatles tapes, Beatles' posters on every wall in her room . . .
etc. Hala is very stubborn (like her father), always right (like her
father), thin-skinned (like her father), do you see a pattern here? Once
I realized that this kid inherited my personality, we started to get
along just fine. Hala started driving this year, because of the
graduated driving system here in Ontario, she can not drive alone for 8
months. Hala wants to be a Lawyer, I think she will do will because I
never win an argument with her.
Sara Leilani ( Heavenly Flower in Hawaiian) will turned 14 last August.
Sara is very funny. I think she should be a stand-up Comedian, but she
wants to be a Doctor. Sara is a hardworking girl. She does not need
prodding to do her homework or assignments like the other two. Sara
plays Basketball in the winter and nothing in the summer. She just hangs
around with her friends.
Tarek Kawika (David, Daoud) was born Xmas day in 1984. Tarek is your
typical Jock. He plays Soccer, Baseball and Football in the Summer/Fall
and basketball and volleyball in the winter. The first thing he does in
the morning, is to watch sports desk. Well, I remember when I was his
age, I ate Soccer, drank Soccer, breathed Soccer and dreamed Soccer.
As for me now, my interests are my family and computers. Computer books,
computer
magazines, computer software. Susan calls herself a computer widow.
Susan, the kids and I love Ottawa. It is a small city with big city
amenities. Ottawa or rather Orleans where we live, is a very safe and a
modern suburb. Where else in the world would your kids leave their bikes
on the front lawn all night without them getting stolen. Where else can
you forget your garage door open all night without somebody breaking in
and killing or robbing you.
One of these days I will have a homepage, there aren't just enough hours
in the day to get around to doing it. Someday soon, hopefully.
