In the movie made during the Cultural Revolution, "Breaking with Old Ideas,"
there is a reference to a "three selfs and one guarantee" policy. I have
found mention of something similar regarding religious policy, but am
unsure how it fits in with the point the movie is trying to make. Can
someone explain this reference? Thanks.

"three selfs and one guarantee" is 三自一包.

"three selfs" is 三自. It is Abbreviation of 自留地、自由市场、自负盈亏.
My english is not good and I only can explain it in brief. I hope you can understand.
自留地 means a land which you can have youself. During the Cultural Revolution, most of lands are
Nationalization, but there is little land which can control by people themself is called 自留地. And
you don't need to hand taxes for these lands.
自由市场 means free market. I think you know it.
自负盈亏 means regardless of profit or loss, you have responsible for the results.

"one guarantee" is 包产到户. It is a policy about the rights to farmers for their land. I can't
explain it for more detail, sorry.

Thanks very much. Your explanation is very clear, and makes sense in the
context of the film.

You're welcome. Actually, I didn't experience the time of Cultural Revolution.
I can't feel how terrible and how extreme in that time...
