Anyone growing up in the Lafayette area during the '60s should
remember Polycarp... actually it was Polycarp Phillip Picou #2 ( or
something thereabouts...)
His show went through several different sets... first he had a
boat that wouldn't go anywhere...the only thing that worked on it was
the steam whistle... and he had a running feud with some giant catfish
( think it was called "Ol' Bleu").
Then the boat sank, and he had a store of some kind. But he took
the whistle from the boat with him.
He gave away a birthday cake from Keller's Bakery once a week ...
but I may be wrong on that because Happy the Clown ( opposing TV
station) also gave away a prize regularly. Both of my younger brothers
won prizes from these shows, but I can't remember what they were... I
only remember that I was real unhappy cause I never won anything!!!!

Buckskin Bill ( Bill Black) was recently elected to the East Baton
Rouge School Board...

That must be the boat he was in when I saw him adrift in Henderson.

I seem to remember the store.

Yeah, Happy the Clown lives in my old neighborhood off Moss St. He used
to perform once a year for us at Cathedral Carmel.

The animal Machouflang (sp?) came from a real man's name in Plaucheville.
He had other jobs at KATC as well.
I also remeber Buckskin Bill, Happy the Clown, and Officer Friendly.
Todd Ortego still plays the Polycarp song on his "Swamp and Roll" show
on Wed nights, KJJB, 105.5, Eunice, LA.

My brother, Gary, and I (15 months apart) regularly watched Buckskin
Bill in the mornings (until we started school). I remember the stump
and the play-doh, etc. Fond memories. As I recall, it was in the late
50's, since I started the first grade in 1960 in Clinton, LA. about 30
miles up Plank Road from Baton Rouge.

If I'm not mistaken, Buckskin Bill Black now serves on the E. Baton
Rouge schoolboard . . . or seems like he was on the board when I lived
in B.R. about a year and a half ago.

I thought Machouflang was a monster of sorts. Didn't know it was a crane.
I do remember Maurice Moustique, too.
I thought Happy "Pinch of Salt, Grain of Sand" the Clown was dead!
Surprised to learn he's still living in Lafayette.
Boy, what kids today missed, huh?

When I saw these names come up on my computer screen a smile came
across my face, and a flood of memeories raced through my brain. I
spent my whole youth watching Polycarps morning cartoon show on KATC
tv 3. As I remember his show moved from his boat to a country store.
I watched him every weekday morning before school. He used to sing
this song (I think),
I had a little lizard and his name was Lou
He could change any color he wanted too
On day he sat upon an easter egg
And stipped all his gears
I think the best part is that I now watch the same cartoons (old bugs
bunny, Pixie and Dixie) on the Cartoon Channel with my sons.
I too remember Happy the Clown on KLFY TV 10, but Happy did not stay
on the air long.
And the king of kid show was Buckskin Bill in Baton Rouge. I still
remember The Monday morning march, and the words to the Hello Mudda
Hello fadda song.

As soon as I started reading this Polycarp thread I started trying to
remember "that Buckskin guy" in Baton Rouge and now Herman has kindly
enlightened me. I watched him whenever I was there and really loved the
show. What years did the show run and does this make me really old to
remember him?
Martha

You know a flood of memories hit me when i saw this thread.
My wife who though I was crazy when I started laughing out
loud. I remember Polycarp very well. I think my favorite
was the PHONOMINA barrel!
Long live childhood memories.

You mean Polycarp Peele Peco II? Sure do, it was a must before I went
