Anyone out there remember the Polycarp kid's show on KATC Ch 3? If so,
what do you remember about the show and Polycarp? (This is for my
school project.)

Also, anyone heard of a guy named Israel Lefleur who was a KPLC Ch 7 in
Lake Charles? If so, what was his show about?

Any other Cajun-oriented local programs any one watched during the
1950s, 60s, and early 70s?

I was born (1950) and raised in Lake Charles. Israel Lafleur rings
a bell but I will have to check with some of my numerous relatives to see
if any of them can jog my memory. I do remember Polycarp Picard #2, a
pleasant children's show. It was quite similar in format to the extremely
successful and long running Cowboy John's show that broadcast out of
Beaumont Texas, which I am sure was no accident. The main difference was
Polycarp, who was not a long tall cowboy but rather a friendly Cajun who
paddled his pirogue. I will send more as I remember.
As I was growing up, TV channel 7 was quite anti-Cajun. The News
Director, Gary Tylor, ran for Congress at least 3 or 4 times and did not
hesitate to look down on Edwin Edwards. Tylor represented John Birch
Society, White Citizen's Council and Jim Crow, tho that changed a little
after I went off to college. I remember no non-Anglos before then unless
you count Lee Janot (Johnny Janot had been her first husband). You would
never hear Cajun or rock or folk music on ch 7's sister radio station,
never. Nor was it classical nor very cowboy. Mainly, 3 to 6 months after a
hit song had been popular they would play a version of it by Montovani or
some other easy listening orchestra.
I am sure I have forgotten quite a bit that will come to me.

Not long ago, a local radio station, KSMB I think, planned a Polycarp
reunion with memorabilia, etc. You can try contacting Bobby Novasad to
see if they have any info. They tried to get the TV station to play
reruns, but remember hearing that most of the videotape was no loner
playable

I remember watching the show EVERY morning before school. Polycarp had
a store. He would play cartoons and talk in between. I vaguely
remember something about someone hiding in a pickle barrrel and Polycarp
always chasing some character. Also, he rode in a lot of local parades
on a Evangeline Maid calliope float. That's about all I remember since
I was only 6 years old.

I remember the show well, but could not spell the names to save my life,
so here goes. Anybody got a Cajun spell-checker?

Polycarp Fili Pecot Number 2, was his name, or some derivative thereof. He
always cautioned to say Number 2 cause his daddy was No. 1 and nobody
liked that man.
Machu Fang was some kind of monster that lived in the swamp and terrorized
Polycarp, and me for that matter.
Maurice Moustique was a little mosquito that used to buzz about giving Ol'
Polycarp heck.
He used to make fun of the KATC logo which was a three-legged cat. KATC
was brand new at the time.
Those and the houseboat are what I remembered most, oh, and the cartoons,
of course.

Now, coming home from school I'd switch to KLFY and watch Happy from
How-To land. "A pinch of dust, a grain of sand, take me now to How-to
Land."

Man, I was a cartoon junkie. Luckily our ariel wasn't strong enough to
pull in WBRZ Channel 2 or WAFB Channel 9 out of Baton Rouge or I would
have been a Buffalo Bob fan as well.

Shane;
I LIVED for Polycarp Philipe Peco Number 2...
I seem to recall there being the houseboat that he lived on, and I
want to say he did battle with Ol' Bleu, a monster catfish in the
bayou. Or maybe it was a gar...
At some point though, the boat was done away wtih...I want to say
it sank during a storm, and Polycarp got a store/bait shop/home after
that...by that time I was higher up in school and wasn't able to watch
as often.
The other thing I remember was that "Polycarp" ( for the life of me
I can't remember his real name...) also hosted KATC's "Dialing for
Dollars" afternoon movie. The point of this show was that several
times during the movie, he would randomly call people in the vieiwing
area, and if those people could correctly tell him how much money was
in the jackpot, they would win it.
We lived in Gueydan , which at the time had a very antiquated phone
system. The ONLY way anyone could call in or out of there was to go
through a telephone operator.,.. which meant that "Polycarp" ,
whenever he pulled a Gueydan phone number out of the hopper, had to
call the operator and READ the phone number out to the operator, and
allow her/him to complete the call.Every other town in the area had
"direct dial" , so there was no advance warning to them, but those of
us in Gueydan would listen carefully to the number he read out, and
hurriedly notify the person being called if they were nearby.<G> We
had it down to an art....everyone knew NOT to stay on the phone more
than a second, and NEVER to call the lucky person after about 2
seconds so that the phone wouldn't be tied up when the call came
through.
To this day, I think we had more winners than aany other town for
this one reason...<G>
My grandmother won twice in this manner...

Israel was also a police juror or city councilman in LC, pretty active in
local area politics. His son is also pretty well know, David LaFleur,
Tight End for LSU and now Dallas Cowboys.

I used to watch Polycarp and his pals in the 60's at my PawPaw and grandma's
house. We also watched the early sunrise shows with news and cajun music bands.
I also remember dialing for dollars!
Polycarp was lots of fun for us kids..

I remember sometimes when we could only watch a little bit of Polycarp
because Granny and Daddy wanted to watch Passe Patout. That's probably
where I got most of my musical tastes at an early age, watching Clifton
Chenier, Rod Bernard and a whole host of other South Louisiana musicians.

Daddy was also friends with Happy Fats whom we used to watch every Saturday.

My Daddy taught me to waltz to CLIFTON CHENIER....I remember the piece
too....It was "A Drunkards Dream"
A few years ago on my birthday, my daughter and I made a trip home to
Morgan City. On the way back, stopped to eat.....a man at a table was
playing an accordian. He played that piece for me. I tell you it was
such a gift he gave.

I was born in Lake Charles 1948. To add to what has already been said about Mr. LaFeur, He lived on 12th street, we lived around the corner on Rose St. He had what was called an Army/Navy store, a surplus store. The program served as an advertisement for his business. He had a band that played chanka chank of course.
