I was
visiting a
friend of
mine last
night and
he had a
painting
by Earl
Hebert
depicting
a Cajun
wedding.
I was
amazed to
see
included
in that
depiction
a man
standing
off to one
side, with
his pants
rolled up,
holding a
broom.
Since I
have had
to fulfill
this old
custom
twice, I
knew
instantly
what the
significan
ce of that
broom and
the stance
of the
gentleman
meant.
When a
person
gets
married,
and should
there be
any older
unmarried
siblings,
then that
older
unmarried
sibling
MUST dance
barefooted
, pants
rolled up,
and with a
broom
because...
"thats all
he has to
sleep
with".The
purpose
was to
more or
less
"encourage
" him to
find a
bride...
AND
SOON!!!
The
first time
I did it
was in
1978...
the broom
was
simple.
But the
second
time I did
it, in
1992, they
dressed
"her" up
bigtime!!!
And they
had the
band
play the
Kaplan
Waltz...
which is
an
incredibly
long song
to dance
to in
front
of the
entire
wedding
party.
Very few
of my
friends
have ever
heard of
this
custom...
even those
in the
Vermilion
Parish
area that
I grew
up.The
only
variation
I have
ever heard
of
this
custom is
that it
also
applies to
women...
I've never
seen that.
I have
my 1992
performanc
e on
video...
thanks to
a dutiful
friend who
had a
camcorder
present.
Anyone
else ever
have to do
this?

Anyone know a traituer who "treats" for computer burps?

I also "suffered the humiliation" of the barefoot broom dance as the
older unmarried sibling at my sister's wedding in 1987 -- in ORANGE socks
on top of it all! This has definitely been a tradition in my Cajun
family for generations.

And it must work sometimes -- I was married within a year after that.

My younger brother is getting married in December. He proposed on Valentine's day of last year. The first thing he said to me after getting engaged was that I better prepare a broom dance. I've only found one video of a girl doing this online. I really am not looking forward to the humiliation of the broom dance but I want to be a good older sister.
