I'm researching "Cajun" fast food items (note the quotation marks), and so
far I have on my list the Cajun McChicken Sandwich at McDonald's and the
Cajun Chicken Crisp at Burger King . . . anyone else know of any other
"Cajun" fast food items, past or present?

(I seem to remember something called the Cajun Whaler at Burger King, but
Burger King's home office denies having ever offered this product . . .
yes, I called them and asked! I also recall Pizza Hut offering a Cajun
pizza, and either Bennigan's or Chilli's -- the latter, most probably --
offering a Cajun fajita.)

Popeye's usually has "cajun" this or that on the menu. I remember a
"Whaler" sandwich back in the '70's, can't say that it had "cajun" in
front of it, could have been a Mr. Cook item too. Burger Thyme? had
several "cajun" menu items, seems like they were a national chain, seems
like Sonic has had one too. Specialty items might just be tested in
certain regions too... Sounds like I eat out too much...

Shane,

It's funny you would ask today as I was cleaning up some longstanding clutter
in my home and I found a advertising circular with a Captain D's ad "Crazy
'Bout Crawfish."

I was amazed and checked the rest of the ad to see if it wasn't something I
picked up in Louisiana in July (Mama gives me stacks of Sunday coupons, etc.)
but it was for Dayton OH! The flyer is dated Aug. 31, 1999.

They offer a crawfish and shrimp dinner for $4.99, crawfish and fish for $3.99
and $5.99 for a crawfish dinner. The mudbugs look to be heavily battered in the
ad.

I'll let yall know how they are real soon!

"Captain D's" a fast food fish place just came out with some Cajun dinners.
Here in Norfolk Virginia we just had a new mall, The MacAuther Center, open
up last March. They have a "Cajun Grill" in the food court. I have often
woundered if any real Cajuns would recoginize that food as cajun.

As a transplanted South Louisiana native who has been living in Oklahoma for
five years, I have learned one important thing about "Cajun" food in most
Oklahoma restaurants: IT ISN'T...unless, of course, the owner or chef has at
least spent enough time in Louisiana to recognize the real thing. We went
to a "Cajun" buffet one day and could only identify maybe 25%of what we saw
(and even less of what we ate). Sure, the items were labeled with familiar
names, but in no way did they resemble anything that ever came out of your
Cajun MawMaw's kitchen. I asked the waitress if they had a Cajun chef.
With a big smile she replied, "Oh no! He's Chinese!" Hmmmm.....Probably
explained the Blackened Egg Fu Etouffee Won Ton. People here seem to equate
"Hot" with "Cajun" and "Hotter" with "Authentic Cajun." We are moving back
home in a few weeks. As for Cajun fast food...Popeye's, here we come!

We've found an interesting place in the Woodlands Mall (just north of
Houston). In the food court there is a fast food restaurant called
"Cafe & Cajun" which tells you something about their skill at using
English. They serve good food, but it also is not in any way Cajun.
It's Chinese, and so are all the workers and cooks. I agree that it
seems they too are equating "hot/spicy" with Cajun. Otherwise, it makes
no sense, to me anyway. But their food is generally pretty good.

There is a restaraunt in the fast food court of the Esplanade Mall in
Kenner, right here in Louisiana. It is also run by Chinese people, and is
also called something Cajun (the name escapes me). The food isn't bad, but
it's certainly not Cajun.

I wonder if there are any Chinese, Phillipino, Japanese, Siamese, etc. Cajuns
yet. It would be something to hear an asian person with a strong cajun accent.

If an asian couple were to move into some small cajun town and have kids (a
town without any other asians so that this couple would be assimilated into the
culture quicker). These kids would grow up with all cajun/creole friends and
would attend public schools were the kids all have accents. What would there
speech patterns be like?

IMHO you only have to be born and raised amongst the cajuns to be a cajun
(maybe 2 generations with some ). To be assimilated into their lifestyle

Doesn't Abbeville have a substantial Vietnamese population?

New Iberia has a notable Asian population . . . and I have seen young Asian males
patroling in their low-rider boom trucks just like the young Cajun males in town.

Also, Jane's Seafood in N.I., which serves excellent Cajun food, appears to be
operated entirely by Asians. The seafood platter is strictly Cajun, except for the
eggroll!

Cajuns

When I was in Ireland, I stopped into a Chinese restaurant. The waiter, a
young Chinese man, spoke with an Irish accent. Sort of floored me.

Then he asked me if I wanted my broccoli beef or rice or chips (french
fries). I got the fries on the side.

I would think, though, that from influences of media, it would be a lot
harder for someone to pick up a strict cajun accent these days.

and some of us feel one only has to have a meal and show honor / respect for
humanity with us to be accepted as Cajun ....

not sure about abbeville's neighborhood's these dayz , thou i do recall a
couple of good friends from nu siberia that i was raise'd with Bobby and
Wayne Comeaux .... (Japanese Ancestory) , to see any of their family in a
crowd one would never view them as Cajun because of their physical features
.... but when joking around with language accents of the neighborhood , one
would realize instantly where they were raise'd and who they are

have fish'd/shrimp'd with a vietnamese family out of nu siberia that own a
chinese restaurant http://www.cajunwebads.com/mekong, big hearts these ppl
have and their community very much respect and acknowledge what they have
recieved from the cajun culture and give back to it with their own cultural
influences , they dont really serve chinese food , i prefer to call it cajun
chinese because of the influence the cajun culture has had on their services
.... , if they could find me up here in minnesota they would probly still
stop by and drop off a lunch for me every now and then. a giving ppl ....

i believe you are correct, now in the initial stages of assimilation they
still hold very strong accents of their native tounge , unlike Wayne / Bobby
who were raise'd with us from birth .... ,

>(maybe 2 generations with some ).

i would expect over tiem their relations will be no different than those
Comeaux boyz ....

many of our men through war travels have had children here and there all
over the world.
many of our men have given their families cajun wayz of thinking ,
one does not necessarly have to live in louisiana or even be born/raised in
louisiana to be cajun ....

Mekong Gardens in N.I. is an awesome Chinese restaurant! And they deliver. Now
if we only had a Cajun restaurant that delivered.

Is this the Jane's Seafood on the side of town by the New Iberia Sugar Co-op?
If so I've eaten there. The food tasted100% cajun.

When you consider the speed with which a pile of boiled anything, on a table
covered with newspaper, can disappear, do you still question whether that is
fast food?
