Sixty Minutes (CBS) had a bullfight segment, Sunday night, focusing on
Francisco Ordon~ez. It was generally a balanced production that included
pros and cons, as well as some spectacular footage of Ordon~ez and some
terrifying footage of the death of Paquiiri.

The last time that Sixty Minutes did anything on bullfighting was some 30
years ago, when they assigned Cleveland Amory, head of the "Friends of
Animals" organization, to produce the segment. It was a debacle. Asking
Amory to do something on bullfighting was tantamout to asking Robert
Welch to deliver a eulogy to Sir Bertrand Russell. It was filled with
lies and distortions.

But, this program was a good one, and Sixty Minutes should be commended,
although I am certain that PETA and other extremist organizations will
raise a storm. Therefore, aficionados on these boards are encouraged to
write to Sixty Minutes, to commend the program for this show.

Lyn:

I agree with your observations. I too thought that they presented both
sides of this "tema" well. One thing I did miss however (the kids were
yelling in the other room and I couldn't hear...) was the name that they
mentioned of the only American to reach Matador status in Spain. I think
they said John somebodyorother. Who was it?

One other note. Remember part where they were talking about how serious
he is before he goes into the ring, and it showed him with a straight
face in his traje de luces, trying to get a crink out of his neck? My
parents said they started laughing at that part - cause my Spanish
husband does the exact same thing with his neck (but he does fight
bulls.)

Bravo 60 Minutos!!

That would be John Fulton, from Philadelphia, who now resides in
Seville. I thought there were others, though. Lyn will know about that.

The matador who was interviewed was John Fulton (Short), the only yankee
to receive and confirm his alternativa in Spain. There have been six
other yankee matadors, but they did not receive their alternativas in
Spain.

Lyn,

Sincere (humble) question. I don't know the answer, and probably lots
of others don't either.

I taped it, but I don't have the equipment necessary to copy it. I
suppose that, if anybody wants a copy, I could have it copied. I
wouldn't know what to charge, because I don't know what it will cost.
Plus postage. Let me know if you want me to do this.

The first was Harper B. Lee, who received his alternativa in Mexico and
performed, frequently, at the turn of the century. The next was Sidney
Franklin, who if you are to believe the b.s. that dominated his book,
"Bullfighter From Brooklyn", was the greatest torero of all times. There
is also a certain amount of doubt as to whether he did actually receive
the alternativa. Then, came John Fulton, Robert Ryan, Richard Corey,
Diego O'Bolger, and David Renk. Apparently, Baron Clements also received
his alternativa in Mexico, but also apparently, didn't perform, after
that time. At least, I can find no record of his having done so. His
alternativa is a bit dubious, at best. Recently, in South America, Kirk
Farrell apparently took his alternativa, but little is known about it.
The only matadores to confirm their doctorates in Madrid were Sidney
Franklin and John Fulton. David Renk is the only matador to confirm his
alternativa in La Plaza Mexico. Notice must be made, also, of the first
woman to receive the alternativa, Raquel Martinez, who was born in
Tijuana, but raised in San Diego. She may have dual citizenship, I'm not
sure. Likewise, we must mention Betty Ford and Patricia McCormick, who
were hot novilleras in the 50s, but the alternativa was not available to
women, at that time. They worked in traje corto, which looks a lot
better on women than does the suit of lights. There have also been many
other yankees, including this writer, who have performed as novilleros in
Spain and Mexico, but did not advance to the alternativa.

Correction: the most recent alternativa of a yankee was not Kirk Farrell,
but Tracy Viser. I have no way of knowing if it was a legitimate
alternativa, or if it will be recognized by anybody. Sort of like Sidney
Franklin. Nobody can authenticate his alternativa.

Thanks Lyn,

I got three of them right (Sidney Franklin, John Fulton, and Robert
Ryan), but was hard pressed to come up with any others.

Interesting bit of history, and glad to see it recorded here.

All the best,

Christopher
