ASSAM DAY 2001 & ASAM SAHITYA SABHA UK

The 3rd AGM of UK Asam SahityaSabha,UK Chapter, was held on 26th August at=20
Marriott HotelNorthampton along with the Assam Day 2001 organised jointly by=
=20
United AssamAssociation of UK and UK Asam Sahitya Sabha.

The meeting started with the hoisting ofthe Sabha Flag, and opening song=20
chiro senehi bhaxa jananai followed bythe installation of the new Executive=20
Committee for the term 2001-2003. Theflag hoisting ceremony was performed by=
=20
Prabhat Sarma, a noted musician fromAssam invited to take part in the=20
cultural programmes. The new committee together with PrabhatSarmah, Srimati=
=20
Sarmah and ChandraMohan. Medhi, retired Principal of Tezpur College were=20
welcomed by the outgoingPresident of the Sabha Bhuban Baruah and were=20
presented with gamuchas and bouquets offlowers. The new Executive=20
Committeewas President - Gagon Hazarika, Vice - President - Jeeban=20
KumariBaruah, Secretary - ManjiraChowdhury, Treasurer - Karuna Sagar Das,=20
Members - Surovi GohainLahon, Kamal Hazarika, Protim Chowdhury, Dinesh=20
Kakati, Khageswar Lahon, Manju Barkataki, Probir Brahma, Jeuti Bora,Dwijen=20

In a brief speech by the new presidentGagon Hazarika sought blessings and=20
full co-operation from the membership andthe Assamese community of the UK in=
=20
carrying out the duties andresponsibilities of entrusted to him. He outlined=
=20
the aims of the Sabha whichwas also a registered charitable trust in the UK=20
and said a nation could not beseen as great unless among other things its=20
language was enriched with literature and firmly established in theworld=20
stage. Language, literature, and culture not only identify a nation butalso=20
could inspire in uniting a diverse society into a powerful nation andcould=20
subscribe to peace and prosperity. He appealed to the membership and the=20
Assamese community in the UK tosupport the main Sabha at home in executing=20
its aims and objectives and helpthemselves via the UK Asam Sahitya Sabha=20
Trust in keeping alive the Assameselanguage, literature and culture. He paid=
=20
homage to those great men and womenwho developed Assamese language worthy of=
=20
winning recognition from all quarters in the world.

Chandra Mohan Medhi, the appointed speaker,spoke at length on the role of=20
literature and culture in the life of theexpatriate community and Prabhat=20
Sarmah expressed his delight in being able to train a group of young=20
childrenespecially for presenting programmes of dance and music on the=20
occasion.

The meeting felicitated Dr Rama Bhartia whowas awarded MBE by the HM the=20
Queen on her Birthday Honours List for servicesto health care. Before=20
conclusion ofthe meeting the outgoing President Bhuban Baruah and Secretary=20
Surovi GohainLahon, were presented with a silver dish each for their=20
dedicated services to theSabha, Prabhat Sarma was presented witha silver=20
dish for his lifelong services to the traditional Assamese music andculture=20
and Chandra Mohan Medhi was presented with a bone-china Londonlandmark=20
souvenir dish as a memento. =20

Assam 2001 began with welcome addresses by Dr Nagen Sarmah,President, Unite=
d=20
Assam Association and by Bhuban Baruah, President of the AsamSahitya Sabha,=20
UK Chapter. Dr Bhupen Dev Sarmah acted as the Master ofCeremonies for the=20
day.=20

A series of talks were delivered, the firstby Dr Nilmoni Sikdar on =E2=80=
=9CAssam=20
Yesterday=E2=80=9D, the second =E2=80=9CThe View from the Next Generation As=
samese=E2=80=9D by Nita=20
andLeena Sharma and the third =E2=80=9CA reflection of 30 years in the Uk=
=E2=80=9D by Dr=20

The highlight of the day was a debate onthe motion: the house calls=20
forAssamese men to wear dhoti at all times. Dr Nilmoni Sikdar, Dr=20
RanjitBaruah and Dr Shyamanga Baruah spoke for the motion opposed by Ilu=20
Sakia, DrDwijen Baruah and Dr Pratim Choudhury. The result was a hung debate=
=20
till thechairperson Nina Goswami cast her vote.

The evening session was graced by thepresence of HE High Commissioner=20
ofIndia Nareshwar Dayal and Lord Patel, a member of the House of Lords=20
fromLancashire. Rini Kakati introduced thedistinguished guests and Dr Probi=
r=20
Brahma delivered the welcome address. TheHigh Commissioner stated that the=20
trade between UK and India was ever growingand he was very happy because of=20
the enormous contributions made by Indians toBritish economy in every field.=
=20
Lord Patel wanted the expatriate community towork honestly and diligently an=
d=20
thus developing a sense of belonging to thecountry.

Some of the cultural items performed in thepresence of the invited guests=20
were Bihu dance by children, Assamese flutedmusic played by Probhat Sarma an=
d=20
accompanied by Manjira Choudhury and family,Satriya dance perfomed by Rita=20
Kakoty. Dr Kumud Sarma compeered.=20

Concurrently with the Asam Sahitya Sabha,there was a seminar on medicine and=
=20
a young persons=E2=80=99forum There wereexhibitions of Assamese bel-metal in=
dustry=20
and traditional Assameseladies=E2=80=99couture and ornaments, paintings by D=

Borthakur and RitaKakoty. =20

After the departure of the invited guestsperformances by local artistes=20
continued till midnight and the late night discoended in the small hours of=20
the morning.
