What is the TV reception like in Anchorage with just a regular antenna?
I'm getting tired of paying $20 a month for cable when I really just
want to watch the major broadcast networks. Before I buy an antenna,
though, I'd be interested to know what kind of signal I could expect.

Here's a really cool website that should answer your question. You simply
type in your address, and the site generates a detailed map that shows you
what sort of reception you can expect from each station in town for a given
antenna assembly.

Check it out!

I live in the muldoon area, which I would suspect has the worst receptoin in
town due to proximity to the mountains. I don't watch enough TV justify
cable. I just have a set of rabbit ears on top of the TV and it works just
fine. We get 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 13. (PBS, NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, and UPN in no
particular order). Although we have to adjust the antenna to get 2 good.
I also have a TV in the garage on top of a freezer for watching ball games
in the winter while doing woodworking (or as my wife would say doing
woodworking while watching the ball games). It also has rabbit ears, but
gets all stations good without adjusting.

It depends on where you're at. If you like in a gully or have
buildings or structures nearby, you might have trouble.

I live around 68th and Lake Otis and had good reception on all
channels.. I'm living around O'Malley/Old Klatt area now, and have a
small hill and two story homes between me and the stations. I can't
get all of them together. It's hard to get both 2 and 13. I've heard
2 is weak station, though.

You should get Fox, PBS and Channel 11 very clearly. That's all you
need. Channel 2 is the worst... Don't even try for that one with a
antenna. It might be of some benefit to get a clear reception of
Channel 13 though... They have my favorite newscaster babe lady (April
Davis) on that station... Good luck...

I got cable when I got a new TV, and after cycling through all the
cable packages am now back to just using the basic channels with
cable and no rented box and remote @$3 p.m.. I am able to get
2,4,5,6,7,8,10,11,13,18,19,30,37,39,and 98, for $20 a month. You
can get a DVD player and rent movies, if you need more.

Before, I got good pictures with rabbit ears, but had to search
around to find just the right site for the antenna to bring in the
local channels. $240 a year seems like a good savings, but the
winters are cold and dark, and you save a bunch by not going out to
movies, bars, etc.. Best thing, I think, is to have a circle of a
few friends visiting on weekends, with food, conversation, and a
ball game on TV.

I am curious... what company do you use for Cable? We are tired of the high cost of GCI and want to drop it all together.
