T. Terry Harvey, owner and operator of the Armadillo Tex-Mex
restaurant on south Franklin Street in Juneau, has just announced that
the restaurant, which "closed for remodeling" in November, is about to
be gone for good. The slump in tourism has something to do with it,
but the deciding factor is simply that running a restaurant, even one
that has been a going concern for 17 years now, doesn't leave a lot of
family time.

Long time patrons who are intersted in "buying a piece of the 'Dillo"
as a souvenir can tour the restaurant beginning Saturday AM.

I'm gonna miss it!

(Gruffy, are you reading this? A sad update to the Feedbad...)

just that the Legislature's back in town, it seems warmer around here
these days)

So am I. I guess I'll have to get Terry's recipe for the Molé
sauce so I can make my own Molé Enchilada... and a few of those
chili bowls.

Most people don't realize that Terry's family has run a barbecue
place in Austin for years and years. He and his half brother Joe
used to hold wonderful barbecues out North Douglas back before
they opened the Dillo. Folks would bring their own treats, from
moose ribs to caribou backstrap to ptarmigan to ducks, and Terry
& Joe would cook them up for everyone to share. I think he still
has the 3-oil-drum grill somewhere.

End of an era. Sigh.

Imag9ine how many more businesses will fail when Liberal
Environmentalists finally get " Big Oil Companies " kicked out of Alaska
for good. All that lost $$ will doom the state which cant survive on
Tourism only 3 months out of the year.

well, it was tourism that put the Dillo out of business. it was
the increased rents in the open-only-in-the-summer tacky tee
shirt shop zone that built up around the place that did it. the
lack of parking and crowds of cruise ship pax who leave their
brains at home, combined with the horrendously high and
ever-rising rent, made it impossible to have a restaurant serving
the local market.

they were a victim of the cruise ship industry, pure and simple.
they were doing fine until it took over their neighborhood.

If increased rents caused them and others out of business. I take it
your in favor of moving the legislature to the Mat-Su. Rents in Juneau
will decrease and businesses will succeed!

I think that is what you are saying!

I really think we want those people staying in Juneau where it is
extremely difficult to escape!

Sounds like a paradox. Thousands of Tourists walking of Boats every
summer spending Million $$ in Juneau shops and Resturaunts , and you
say that is what killed the business ?

You might "take it", but as usual, your "take" is wrong, Jim. I
favor leaving the Capital and the Legislature right where they
are.

If you don't like what the legislature does, elect someone new.
Moving it won't make a difference, and will cost a fortune.
LooneyUwe's petition will prevent voters from knowing the full
cost, of course.

You can think what you want, but it doesn't make it true.
Boothian logic just doesn't work in the real world.

I had my suspicions...he used to wear a t-shirt at KTOO that said, if I
remember correctly, "Harvey's Barbecue" on the front. On the back it said
"You Can Beat Our Prices, But You Can't Beat Our Meat."

His salsa will live forever in my memory.
