For the 25th year, the African American Studies Program (AASP) is proud
to offer our EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL programs. In 2006 we will visit Africa,
Brazil, and Cuba.

We are leaders in establishing new and innovative programs for those
who want to learn about the history, culture, and political
developments in different parts of the world. Our trips are designed to
give you more by highlighting the depth and diversity of the places we
visit -- not just the usual tourist attractions.

We have listed 12 program experiences for 2006. Each of our programs
includes first class hotels with a full breakfast each day. Some
programs include additional meals which are listed in the itinerary.
The cost includes round-trip air fare from the departing U.S. city,
hotels, fees, program guides, and all in-country transportation. Our
prices are based on a minimum of 15 people with a maximum of 20. Some
prices may change, but the change is usually minimal. A $150.00 deposit
by check is required with submission of the application and is
refundable 60 days before the date of the trip. Full payment must be
made 50 days before departure by check, cash, money order -- or credit
card for the air cost only.

1. SENEGAL SPECIAL: SUNDAY, APRIL 9 TO SUNDAY APRIL 16, 2006 (8 DAYS)

A one week study of slavery and culture in Senegal. A good introductory
trip to Africa. We will visit DAKAR, the nation's capital; GOREE
ISLAND, the home of the infamous slave house which many Black
Americans' ancestors passed through; THEIS, known for its production of
massive handmade tapestries; FADIOUTH, a fishing village; and TOUBA,
the religious capital of Senegal.

2. EGYPT - HISTORICAL STUDY: SUNDAY, JUNE 4 TO SUNDAY, JUNE 18, 2006
(15 DAYS)

A study of ancient Egypt and its contributions to world civilization.
Trip includes a four day Nile cruise(all meals included); visits to
CAIRO, the nation's capital; ASWAN, the site of the high dam; ABU
SIMBLE, the center of ancient Nubia; SHARM EL SHEIK, the site of Mt.
Moses; LUXOR, the site of ancient Thebes; and ALEXANDRIA, place of
Greco Roman culture.

3. GHANA, NIGERIA, SENEGAL - HISTORICAL ROOTS: SUNDAY, JUNE 18 to
SUNDAY, JULY, 2, 2006 (15 DAYS)

A study of African American historical roots with visits to DAKAR, the
nation's capital; GOREE ISLAND, the home of the infamous slave house
which many Black Americans' ancestors passed through; THEIS, known for
its productions of massive handmade tapestries, YAMOUSSOUKRA, site of
one of the largest Catholic churches in the world; ACCRA, capital of
Ghana; CAPE COAST, site of the infamous slave house; and KUMASI, old
Ashanti capital.

4. SENEGAL SPECIAL # 2: SATURDAY, JUNE 24 TO SATURDAY, JULY 1, 2006 (8
DAYS)

ancient art; SANGHA and DOGON, centers of ancient non-western society;
JENNE, oldest city in Mali.

6. BRAZIL - CUBA: AFRICAN INFLUENCE IN THE DIASPORA: SATURDAY, JULY 15,
TO SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2006 (15 DAYS)

This program is designed to study African culture and current day race
relations in the two countries. Visits to RIO DE JANEIRO, center of
Brazilian culture; SALVADOR, BAHIA, port of entry of enslaved Africans
in Brazil; HAVANA, capital of Cuba; and SANTIAGO, port of entry of
enslaved African in Cuba.

7. MOROCCO - SENEGAL: ARAB AND SUB-SAHARAN RELATIONS: SUNDAY, JULY 16
TO SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2006 (14 DAYS)

A study of religious, cultural and historical relationships between
West and North Africa. Visits to DAKAR, capital of Senegal; MARRAKECH,
center of Sub-Saharan trade; CASABLANCA, major sea port; RABAT, capitol
of Morocco; and FEZ, a holy city.

8. CUBA: RACE AND CULTURE: SUNDAY, AUGUST 6 TO TUESDAY, AUGUST 15,
2006 (10 DAYS)

This trip is designed for those interested in current day social and
cultural relationships. LIMITED TO THOSE IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION.
Visits to HAVANA, capitol of Cuba and center of Cuban culture; and
SANTIAGO, center of the introduction of slavery in Cuba.

9. SOUTH AFRICA, ZIMBABWE, MADAGASCAR: NEW SOCIETIES: THURSDAY, AUGUST
3 TO THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 2006 (15 DAYS)

A study of economic and political changes in three countries since
their independence. Includes a three day stay in a GAME PARK (all meals

man and home of one of the largest game preserves; NGORONGORO, one of

colonial city on the edge of the desert.

This unique educational experience is designed to provide a cultural
experience in five countries from West to East to North Africa. You
will visit the capitals of SENEGAL, DAKAR; GHANA, ACCRA; GHANA,
KUMASI(old Ashanti capital); KENYA, NAIROBI;, ETHOPIA, ADDIS ABABA; and
EGYPT, CAIRO. In Ghana and Senegal you will visit slave houses and in
Kenya you will go on a three night safari in the SERENGHETI and visit
NGORONGORO, which is one of the largest craters in the world. In
Ethiopia you will also visit the ancient kingdom of AXUM. In Egypt you
will enjoy a three night Nile cruise on your way to ASWAN and ABU
SIMBLE in the south.

Volunteering in GHANA in grassroots
community development projects -- farming,
reforestation, construction, building schools,
libraries and dormitorites, HIV/AIDS, public
health, tutoring/teaching, computer training,
archaeology, distance learning, etc.

New projects are always on the drawing board.

You cover your roundtrip transporation & minimal
room/board fees. This is probably the CHEAPEST
and certainly one of the BEST ways to experience Africa,
not as a tourist, but as a participant in daily African life.

Virtually ALL who apply will be accepted.

Volunteers will join with Ghanaian and African counterparts
and will be placed in projects matching their
interests, based on the needs of Ghanaian communities.

Projects last from one to several weeks; participation in
more than one project is highly recommended.
