Okay, I saw Dark City again last night (gotta love the midnite show at the UC)
and a thought that had occured to me.

The song "I'm only Human" From "The Ink Theif"(lyrics at
http://members.aol.com/Shservant/human.htm) kind of makes me think of Mr.
Hand. Here we've got a man who isn't human, but he himself says that he wanted
to know how it would feel to be John Murdock. He seems truly interested in
having those experiences, in being able to feel....more so than the others who
just don't want to have their race die out.

From the song...

You see I've been praying
For the day I find a way
Praying for the day
When I can say
I'm only Human.
Only Human.

What do folk think?

I agree (and thanks for the plug ;-D ) But I'd go a step further into the Ink
Thief and take the bit right before the song begins.

Jim- I mean I DO try and be scientific, but I AM only human, and sometimes it's
hard.
Ink Thief- Only human? ONLY human?? I've given it all for humanity. The quest
for power, LONGING to be free of bumphood and become a winner in the human race
. . . and you say . . . I'm only human.

(cue the music)

But on the other hand- (and for the sake of playing Devil's Advocate) The Ink
Thief wanted to become human for his own personal intentions, like ruling the
world. The Strangers wanted to become human for survival, for the ability to
adapt to their surroundings, a talent which they found in humans, and wished if
not to become like that themselves, at least learn how to emulate it.

I didn't see the Strangers as having those kind of motives (ruling the world
kind of motives). They didn't really seem to take any pleasure in having
control over anything (with the exception of Richard, and that was only when he
had been imprinted with Murdoch's memories)

So yes, I'd agree that the characters are similar in respect to the goals that
each wanted, but the motives that powered each was very different.
