RHPS this movie is forbidden in my country years ago.
And last year when I went to berkeley for summer school,
I saw it for the furst time. I just want to know is all the
fans go to see RHPS just the same compared with cal ones?

And why do people throw popcorn and news paper balls in the theater?

Last question is why this movie is only shown every saturday nid-night?

Thanx

Hope you liked our show!! Not all Rocky shows are like the one in
Berkeley. Some theatres have more things that they are allowed to throw
during the movie, some yell different lines at the screen.

But... people do go to see the show in the same manner... dressed up
sometimes, throwing things during the movie, yelling lines...

Erm. I'll bet I'm rusty on the trivia, but I'll have a go.

I seem to remember hearing about an exec at Fox who decided
to try Rocky as a midnight feature. Nobody special, just one of
the clock-punchers at 20th Century. As to why Saturday (or
Friday) in particular, I must admit that I have no idea.

I'll take the stab at guessing why on Fridays and/or Saturday midnights.

Due to the major factor(now adays) as it was back in the 70's and 80's.
Notice how most the audience are kids? Ever think they'd be allowed to go on a
school night? Also..do you have a job? I do. I wouldn't want to go to my
regular M-F, 8-5 job after a show night. That would suck.
Therefor the weekend is when most of the cool fun all night stuff happens
anyhow, why not?

Tim Deegan was a promoter for Fox and he thought it might work to re release
the movie as a Midnight Movie like The Wall or some of the other films ( I
forget names) that would run on weekend nights.

He printed up flyers that looked homemade and intentionally smudged to make it
look real underground. They started in New York I think....then the theater in
Houston wanted to order it and the rest is history.

I know that the midnight movies of the 70's ran on Saturdays but I do not know
if they ran on Fridays...but it seems Saturday would be the logical choice
since people were already used to midnight movies at that time slot.

I would have to suggest that the reason it was put to Fri-Sat was to
better ensure an audience. Fewer people have to be at work by 7am on
saturday and sunday than on..say wednesday.

so I guess a tuesday night showing is out?

Here's where I'll take my stab... :)

The problem with the "normals" out there in society is that the majority of
them have 9-to-5 weekday jobs...thus meaning they have to get up early for
work during the week...thus meaning they have to get to bed early at night
during the week...thus leaving out any possibility for them to get out to a
midnight movie during the week--unless they are of the gifted FEW who can
chronically go for days without sleep on a regular basis...like your typical
RHPS cast techie (Mr. Scott!). :) So, in order to leave open the
opportunity for Joe & Jane Average to see the show at all, it made sense to
show it on either a Friday or Saturday night...thus leaving ample time for
folks to sleep the following day away. And of course, in BEING a "midnight
movie," that automatically added a hint of risk for most of the
"normals"...thus making their attendance at such a show seem much more
exhilarating. After all, such "underground films" with their notorious
"cult-like followings" were still thought of by many as being taboo back in
the '70s.

However, according the Bill Henkin's "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" book,
RHPS became SO popular in the late '70s that midnight showings not only
occurred on Friday AND Saturday nights, but even on Thursday and (*gasp!*)
Wednesday nights as well at those very same theaters! For a while, Rocky
Horror became so popular that shows were selling out FOUR nights in a row
EVERY WEEK...much to the chagrin of conservatives, I'm sure. :)

Now--twenty years later--I doubt that any Rocky theater/show/cast could
ever enjoy such demanding popularity...even for a short period of time. But
at least for one point in its history, RHPS was popular enough to be shown
four nights every week. :)

Oh, wow--really?! That is so cool to know! Talk about your Rocky Horror
double feature! :)

So, exactly WHEN did this happen? Do you know the specific year(s)? And
was it like this JUST for the Halloween season(s)--perhaps part of the
convention craze that goes with a major RHPS Anniversary? Or were your shows
that much in demand at other times of the year as well?

Are there any other Rocky cast veterans out there (still performing or
retired) who recall earlier days in RHPS history where multiple showings of
the movie took place at certain theaters...either during the week or on the
same nights?

In the case of two shows happening on the same nights, I know this has
taken place with various Rock & Shock events; but what I would like to know
is if back-to-back showings of JUST "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" took
place at other theaters besides the Tiffany Theatre in Los Angeles.

According to Bill Henkin in "The RHPS Book" the movie was promoted as
a midnight show mainly because that was the only way they could get
theatres to play it. RHPS was for damn sure too much for the straights.
Please remember that "Rocky" was never shown in New York on a first-run
basis, while three (count 'em - THREE) theatres in Washington D.C. had
it in first-run, for a week and a half in Jan.-Feb. 1976.
Of course those early Waverly shows set the pattern for the next 22
years.

Ok....I can beat that. I went to high school in Munich Germany and that's when
I started going to see RHPS. It played at the Deutsches Museum Kino at, get
this, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm, 10pm EVERYDAY! That was for the first two years I
was there (79-80) then they switched it to 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm, and 11pm.

Word on the street was that it had been playing like that for several years.
Sometime around 80/81 the theatre got the idea to convert one of their rooms to
a "Rocky Room" and redecorated it to look like the Floor Show. They also sold
a Rocky Pack with tp, rice, noisemakers, a cookie (instead of toast) and a
little card that told you what to yell when (mostly in English but with some
German in there too....I've still got one of those somewhere). The theater was
empty most of the days but the Friday and Saturday nights rolled.

Once, however, a German couple asked us repeatedly to stop all the yelling and
dancing. When we refused they went to get the manager, who told them that if
they would like tickets to another showing he would give them to them but that
he wouldn't stop us from doing what we came there to do (and what they
encouraged).
I haven't been back to Munich for a while so I don't know if it's still
playing....anyone got a line on that? If it is, then, trust me, THAT is the
best place to see it.

I don't know if this qualifies, but the Charles Theatre in Baltimore used
to do back-to-back evening shows of "Rocky" in 1983-84. They never ran
it as a late show - just screenings at 7.30 and 9.30 several times each
year (the dates were 8/30/83, 10/29/83, 12/30/83, 12/31/83 at 8 pm only,
5/5/84, and 10/31/84 the infamous "Egg Night"). The Charles also hosted
the local premiere of "Shock Treatment" on 5/5/84 (please see my earlier
posting).
Other back-to-back showings included Maryland Institute College of Art,
every September from 1987-93 (from '87 to '89 they were doing it THREE
times a night, at 7.30, 9.30, and midnight), and Univ. of Maryland at
Baltimore County in 1983 (again, three times each evening). Finally,
United Artists Golden Ring, Baltimore's longest-running "RHPS" home, did
its usual late show on 11/2/85 (the 10th anniversary) and, having sold
about 30 tickets too many, sprung an extra 2 am screening on us. (Thank
you, Ken Demski!!)

I head about this theater from a friend who went to Munich a couple
summers ago. It is still there and still decorated in Rocky style!
She went to go see another movie there and they set up these cool
gargoyles in the theater. She said that she couldn't concentrate on
the movie becuase the gargoyles' eyes were glowing while the movie was
playing! Now that sounds like a cool place to see Rocky. Apparently,
there is a musem section in the theater now with pictures of special
Rocky events.

The members who later formed the Zenroom cast used to put on
a halloween show of rhps at nine and midnight, same place,
same night... but only one pair of shows per year.

We've considered doing the same thing again, mainly to
include those normally excluded by their circadian rhythems
and to save on theatre costs over a multi-night gig. The
idea was not well received this time around.

There are rumors of a show coming up in Atascadero in a few
weekends... that one will run on two weekends and may be
two or four shows in length. If you need more info let me
know and i'll dig some up. That show is not directly related
to ZenRoom.

Thanks for that bit of info. That's good to know. Comforting to know that
people can still go in there and yell at the screen and dance in the aisle much
to the consternation of the unsuspecting German moviegoer.

The Museum Lichtspiele still shows RHPS.

Haven't visited since 1991. It was playing every day at 4 pm. Mucho
depressing. I was there for the 4 pm showing on a Saturday--sadly, I
had read in the French fanzine that it was every day at 5 and missed
even more of the film explaining to the ticketseller in my broken German
that I didn't care that I had missed most of the film...

The theater was still going back in 1996; the Swiss fan club made a
field trip. They noted that you really should contact them or the
Germans if you want to go; the Rocky theater decor is worth the trip
(they even have those weird drapy light fixtures from the ballroom) but
there is practically no local crowd. I think the original owner died
and it was in the will/lease/something that the theater had to continue
to show RHPS. (They also show the Blues Brothers.)

They still sell the props kit, though the fan club mentioned in the
newspaper (a neat German compilation of articles, photos, etc.) is now
moribund.

People interested in contacting the current German RHPS fan club should
contact its president, Simone Violka, at club...@aol.com

They maintain a German-language and an English-language page (translated
by yours truly).

The Studio Galande theater in Paris, France showed RHPS
Thursday-Saturday a total of 7 times a weekend when I was there in 1991
(shows at 10ish and midnight). Of course, the Galande is a very small
theater (seats maybe 40?). It is the only French Rocky Horror theater.

I've heard from French fans that there are far fewer shows now. The
theater is trying to become an official distributor; the rights to RHPS
in France expired and were extended til May, so heaven only knows what
is going on now.

To add to my previous post, there were at least two houses on the East Coast
that commemorated the movie's 10th anniversary by showing it all day. In
Philly, Theatre of the Living Arts (TLA) did 5 shows on 10/31/85. (Note that
this is the same theatre where Andrew "Dice" Clay taped his initial HBO
special.) Also, D.C.'s Key Theatre ran "Rocky" as a full-time attraction
for TWO weeks in Oct.-Nov. 1985, with weekday matinees and evening shows
in addition to the usual late shows.

I think the best theater for RHPS is Village East on Second Ave. And 12th
Street in Manhattan, New York.

And no it plays every Friday and Saturday at Midnight.

And they throw the stuff because they are big fans and when they throw rice in
the movie the fans do too.

I like it *better* when there are fewer people yelling. That way you can
understand the more creative lines (which usually gets you a better laugh than
a bunch of garbled lines, most of which are generic and because of this you
can't understand the individuals yelling unique lines.) Plus, the more
virgins, the more chances you get to bite!

Hey Randy, I remember that!

The TLA... what a great Rocky theatre. 420 seats, and we
sold out every Friday and Saturday night, mainly because it was on
South Street, and there is always over 1000 people on South Street.

Then, Electric Factory bought the theatre in 1988. They told
us that Rocky would be back in two weeks. Then, when we showed up
with all our shit two weeks later, the new managment looked at us as
if we were insane. Talk about getting dicked.

Now, the TLA seems small...

In article <358229d5...@news.newsguy.com>,

Yeah man...I went to TLA several times each year between 1984 and 1986.
I loved that place, and especially the tall dark guy who played Frank.
It was a damn shame when the movie got bumped over to the Roxy...but they
kept bringing it back. In late May 1988 I went there, but there was no
cast! So I threw together an instant cast and played Frank on the vast
TLA Stage. It was there again in February 1989 and that time there was
a cast, who invited myself and two other Marley Station players in free.
By April it was back at the Roxy and the cast was gone.
(Note: I also saw it at Northeast Four on 8/26/88, just before the movie
ended its run there. Alas, no cast...)
Of course, The 'Ducers have become the standard-bearers for the Philly
area. Hope to see y'all soon.

I remember the TLA, though not from any screenings of Rocky
Horror....that was a year before my arrival in the Rocky scene. My
Rocky memory of the TLA comes from my two visits there in 1991 to see
"The Rocky Horror Show" with some of the roles played by members of
the Transducer Players. Sure wish someone could convince the TLA to
do that again.
