Do you smell what the Rev is cooking, Larry Viezel
<lar...@cybernex.net>?

Hm...You think that folks would've learned from
Showgirls.....Admittedly, Austin Powers IS a better movie, but this
entire "Hey! Let's make this a cult thing!" mentality escapes me. RHPS
has already become mainstream (with the showings on Fox,Fx,VH1,and
Comedy Central) Now "The Powers That Be" want to take a mainstream
event to make it a "cult classic". Some people need to learn that you
don't make a "cult classic". It just kind of happens..

But I may be wrong....

I agree that you can't force a cult classic, but the difference between
Showgirls and Austin Powers is that Austin has some sort of a following
already. It doesn't sem as forced. I could totally appreciate people
coming in costume to this movie at midnight. Now, if they hand out AP
scripts at the showing then thats a bad thing.

Why not, they hand out ap for rocky. I personally one of the Austin fans,
and would be interested in seeing a new midnight movie. I understand it was
tried with Priscilla, but didnt succeed well. I think it migh tbe kinda fun
to try and AP it.

i went over a friend's house a couple months ago and he and his friends showed
me Austin Powers, and they acted scenes out and yelled at callines. when i
asked them, none of them had ever even seen rocky even on VIDEO... so, yes, in
my opinion, austin powers makes really good ap... although it's silly and
raunchy enough that the intent may often be worse than our lines...

only problem is, some of the things aren't actable. (the back-flip into the
car?)

YES..it was tried with Little Shop...but not promotionally
(is that a word?)
Little Shop sortta started to take off like RHPS..but died just as quickly.
but I'd LOVE to see Little Shop done again...its set up just like RHPS

Great songs
both started as plays

Okay, my point was that I don't think AP is wrong, just that handing out
pre-wrtten AP scripts is wrong. They's be better off with planted people
in the audience doing AP and making it seem spontaneous.

Even if they did just plant people in the audience I still think that
it would be a bad idea. An AP movie like Rocky is something that
evovles gradually and not with help from some executives from the
marketing department of a movie studio. It is true that a shrewd
executive decided to show RHPS as a midnight showing after it failed
miserably as a "normal" movie. However, all the costume stuff, and AP
stuff was the audience's idea, not the executive's idea. I even heard
that people were doing crude AP during it's original run even before
it started on the midnight circut.

Ahh. So what you mean is *planned* spontenaity. But I agree. Unless you make an
enormous effort, trying to get an entire audience to do lines just makes a lot of
random noise. A few people who know it all can get it out in a way that might
actually be distinguishable.

Remember Monkey-Man, AP and Cast performances are 2 different things.
Cast performances are not nessa. (Obscure movie reference - 5 points)

Its playing at the same theatre that SHowgirls was playing at which, not by
coincidence is the same theatre Rocky Horror is playing at. The Village East
Cinemas, 12th St. and 2nd ave.

Okay..where to begin....Here goes.....
As an avid watcher of both Austin Powers AND Rocky Horror <probably my 2
favorite movies>, I don't really think that Midnite Austin Powers is all
that groovy an idea. I mean, I would love to see Austin Powers not fade
out of view, but the midnite thing seems way too forced<although not as
much as Showgirls>, and not such a good thing for Rocky. From what I
gather, no one really wants Rocky to go mainstream, and with Austin
Powers doing this, it makes it seem like the midnite thing can be done
with any movie, which shouldn't happen, therefore degrading Rocky's
uniqueness. Austin Powers is an AWESOME movie, but what sets it out
from other movies to make it a midnite, cult thing? Last thing we need
is 100 a Ferris Bueller disciples running around these halls....errr...i
mean, a movie theatre full of people saying, in a incredibly bad voice
noless, "Yeah baby!" Austin Powers is just waaayyy too popular <which,
in itself angers me> to be made into a cult classic. Wouldn't that
defeat the purpose? Blech.

-=matt!

somebody reply to this so i dont feel like a retard.
