Okey dokey, there are SOME privately owned Shock Treatment prints (16mm, are
there any privately owned 35mm?) and quite a bit more Rocky Horror prints. My
question is: how do these films find their way into public circulation so that
anyone could easily buy them? Is it true FOX used to sell individual rights for
the film to EACH theatre, so the theatre owned a print?
The reason I'm looking to know is because it's sort of one of my goals to OWN a
Shock Treatment print (I'd settle for 16mm- the second hand 16mm projectors are
cheap and easy to come by) but I don't REALLY want to have to resort to
something illegal. I'd like to own it more than rocky horror- cos I think the
shock treatment video isn't the best that it could be.
I'm gonna try somehow to get my cinema to show shocky- the people running it
aren't like theatre managers in america, no one knows who owns the place, but
everyone claims it's their relative, though management changes lots- besides,
there all VERY stupid people- stupid enough to be tricked into showing shocky...
Don't worry- I'm not gonna steal the print or anything, I just wanna see it on
big screen... However if I had like £2000 or something, I could borrow it, get
it to a photo lab and have it back in a week- or bring it to those people who
develop your camera photos- in that case I'd need £12,000.
Damn, man. You're the kind of person who ruins RHPS and Shocky for EVERYONE
else, do you know that? If you disrespect a theater like it seems you DO, and
someone else has a better head on their shoulders than you do (and you have
shown you know less than nothing about running RHPS OR Shocky, to the point
your plans could cause actual HARM to both) and tries to get Shocky or RHPS to
play at that same theater after you move on to something else, you've ruined
it for that person. Your attitude does none of us any favors, even from
across the ocean. You should get a serious viewpoint adjustment, show your
theater some respect if they're stupid enough to deal with you in the first
place, and try not to hurt everyone just to get what you want.
It's a shame, Kevin. I was beginning to think you were just having 'beginners
attitude', but it looks like your problems go deeper than that. Sorry to
flame, but I honestly have no other response.

Yes. There is one person I know who owns a Shock Treatment 35mm print but he
isn't interested in lending or selling it.
> how do these films find their way into public circulation so that
> anyone could easily buy them?
Well, easily being a relative term. Prints get decomissioned. Most meet with
the end of a band saw. Some do not. Some don't even get sent back to the
distributor. These are the prints that through sale and trade wind up in the
hands of the collectors.
> Is it true FOX used to sell individual rights for the film to EACH theatre,
> so the theatre owned a print?
Nope. They lease rights. Occasionally they will sell the rights to some form of
distribution aspect - like non theatrical venue distribution, or DVD
distribution. But they do not sell a theatre anything. They distribute a film
to a theatre and take a percentage of box office gross.

In theory, although the lines are sorta grey - owning a print is illegal. All
prints are owned by Fox and none are for sale. There is even more of a
restriction in the UK about owning 35mm theatrical copies of films because of a
relatively recent case involving Disney, who is a very litigation happy
company.

For someone who doesn't want to "resort to something illegal" you sure like
tricking theatre managers. Can't you just ask them and arrange for it to be
shown legitimately? This may come as a shock but thats what they are in the
business of doing.

Not that I have any ideas where you are getting these figures or anything, but
what good do you feel bringing 6 reels of 35mm theatrical film to a camera
photo lab do? I am assuming that you want to bring a print to a lab to make a
duplicate somehow - which is entirely possible, but rather illegal without the
express written consent of Fox.
Hypothetically, if someone in the community who had a 16mm print of Shock
Treatment or a 35mm print of Rocky came forward and said they were willing to
lend it to you (which I for one really am not, considering your duplicitous
nature) what would you do? Where would you start?

How do you know what my theater managers/owners are like? Mine happens to be
senile and old. But you work around that as politely and positively as you
can. This isn't a war, Kevin. Nor is it a battle of wits.
I like seeing old movie houses

Then why the comment about being stupid enough to show Shocky? IF you feel
that way, why are you putting all of this effort into it? Why work on a
project you, yourself dont' believe in?
The theatre hasn't replaced the projectors

You play the game by their rules, then. Can't you hold your tongue, since you
know about this issue they have?

I'm offended by your entire approach to Rocky, Shocky and how to deal with
theaters in general. I am offended by how you come onto this board thinking
you're offering us new thoughts and ideas without even bothering to
acknowledge you know less than most others here. You seem to think that just
because you're 'new in town' we should all listen to your advice and questions
with a grain of salt. Maybe you should LEARN a few things before attempting
to give anyone advice. I'm not at all concerned that I offended you - you've
offended more people than just me on this board, with your assumptions and
your ego.
I would love to
> be able to sit down and talk it out about getting shock treatment shown and

Your attitude tells me you don't care a whit about anything but your own
desires. Who do you think you are - an angel sent from heaven to screw
undeserving theater managers? Who are you to pass judgement and say what
anyone deserves, only to justify your own approach? Get a grip on yourself,
Kevin.
And we
> can't communicate with theatre runners like YOU-
Again, your assumptions are completely wrong. We've spent the past 15 years
building a rapport with our theater. Do you honestly think it's that easy for
everyone over here? Now THAT'S insulting, Kevin. You can't expect to go in
to a theater with all guns blazing, screw someone knowingly, and have anyone
respect you or want to even discuss a showing of any film with you. YOu have
a horrible attitude, and since it comes out so well online, I'm pretty sure
it's there in person too.
cos if you're showing rocky,
> your cast is meeting- I ONE PERSON- want to show Shocky on it's own- with no

By treating theaters badly, and according to your own words, that's part of
your goal, you ARE hurting the experience for others.
>rocky horror is dying out-
Hah! Hardly.
>it hardly ever profits now-
Again, presumptuous BS. RHPS is the primary thing keeping my theater open,
Kevin. Maybe it's not profitable in YOUR area, but that doesn't mean it's not
profitable anywhere else. Your microcosm seems to be much smaller than the
one in which the rest of us live. And it appears to be shrinking.
so it
> WILL lose money-
WRONGO! If it WILL loose money, it should already be dead. Again, you've
failed before you even got anything off the ground because of your attitude.
According to your own dubious logic, you are fighting a loosing battle. Why
not find another hobby?
so if you genuinely sit down and talk with a kind gentle
> theatre manager- he's probably very caring and understanding- or just plain
> stupid- in fact tricking greedy theatre runners (the ones I know all are) is
> the way of getting it shown-
YOur entire approach of trickery and lying is wrong and completely beneath
everyone on this board but you, apparently. Do you even READ what you type
before you post it? This isn't the Thunder Dome - 'two men enter, one man
leaves'.
and in fatc I'm not ruining it- I'm bringing the
> show back- by disadvantaging the thteare owner, and bringing advantage to
the
> cast (if there was one) or to the town.
Why must you disadvantage the theater owner at all? Why is that part of your
plan? You're thinking is damaging to the rest of the RHPS phenomenon. Even if
you're showing Shocky, it's hooked up to Rocky. And honestly, Shocky alone
wihtout a shadow cast stands less of a chance of succeeding than Rocky alone.
So why put effort into something you feel is doomed to fail anyway?
And my intentions are good to be able
> to own a print of a film- just cos something's illegal doesn't make it
> unethical-
AGAIN, WRONGO! IF you do something illegal, and if you get caught (you seem
like the type to get caught) you're contributing to the stigma attached to the
RHPS and Shocky cultures. There was a theater owner out here who thought the
law about underage nudity was stupid. So he broke that law by casting underage
Trixies who stripped completely nude, and he got caught. He tried to defend
himself by saying that's what happens at ALL RHPS THEATERS, which hurt the
rest of us. So where do you draw the line? It's not for you to pick and choose
which laws to follow, unless you don't mind getting caught and prosecuted. If
it was only YOU you have to worry about, that's fine. But it's NOT just you,
it's the entire RHPS and Shocky community. IF you don't keep that in mind,
you have no business even TOUCHING a reel of RHPS or Shocky film.
If something is illegal purely due to copyright issues, it IS unethical to
break those laws. IF something is illegal at all, just because you think the
law is unethical doesn't mean you should feel alright breaking that law.
You're attempts to justify your desire for your own copy of the film are far
fetched, to say the least.
if you watch america's dumbest criminals, there are silly state laws-
> like in a town in texas you can't take photos of rabbits in june- so I
think
> EVERY fan of a movie should be able to own a print to look through the
> wonderful picture in crystal clear colour (better than a video) and marvel
at
> the site of it on a screen- ni their own home.
Your comparisons are ridiculous, Kevin. YOu can't justify your wrong thinking
by comparing yourself to the state of Texas. And for the record, I don't
watch that show - it's tripe.
Did you help produce the film at all? Then what on Gods green earth makes you
think you or anyone else has the right to own a copy of it? I know some
peopel who DO own copies of the film, but they don't try to justify it by
claiming some sort of messiah attitude like you seem to be doing. Their
attitude is 'Yeah, it's illegal, I know it's wrong, but hey, here it is and if
I get caught, fine, I'll pay the price.' IF you're committing this type of
crime, don't try to fix the problems you solve by placing yourself on a
pedistal. All that does is make you an easy target for rock-throwing.
Sorry if you took my post the
> wrong way becky- you sometimes overanalyse I think- But my intentions were
> purely for the good of the FANS- Good day!
I took your post the way you layed it out. You often UNDERTHINK, I think.
You come on here giving all sorts of recommendations and advice from a
standpoint of complete ignorance. You post VERY negative opinions of how we
should all deal with our theaters, and how YOU are dealing with your possible
theater, you ask for our advice on how to rip the theaters off, how to STEAL
your own copy of Shocky, and you are throwing stones at ME? You obviously
have a very low opinion of everyone on this board. You're treating us like a
bunch of criminals who are helping you with your own dubious plans.
Your intentions are for the good of KEVIN, not the fans. If you were even
thinking about the fans at all, you would be thinking about the long-term
affects of your actions and your plans. You are not. Therefore, you're not
helping anyone or thinking of anyone but yourself. You're also not winning
yourself much support in the RHPS or Shocky communities. But maybe that's
just my impression of most of the posted replies to most of your comments.
It's there in black and white, maybe your ego is filtering it out.

I am one of many who got into RHPS before there was an Internet. At least,
before one was widespread and generally easy to access by the computer-
illiterate public. I wasn't even AWARE of other casts. I thought RHPS was
more of a local thing, certainly not state-wide or even international! If I
was to get into RHPS NOW and happen upon this newsgroup, if I was young and
inexperienced (young, dumb, and full 'o cum, as the saying goes) but with the
opinion I know a little something about RHPS or theater or what have you, or
that I have a fresh angle and fresh ideas to contribute and people are idiots
not to listen, I'd probably stick my ego in my mouth, too. And someone would
probably offer me some salt to go with it, as many of us have been doing with
poor Kevin since he started up.
HOWEVER, (notice how big the 'however' is.) I would learn from my mistakes, no
matter how I was treated or if I thought I was right. If people know more
about a subject than you do, even if they have overdeveloped sarcasm glands
like most of us do, you should listen to their advice. Conduct yourself with
with the knowledge that they DO know more than you, tuck your balls back a
little bit, and earn their respect by acting in a respectful
manner. 'Respectful manner' includes concern for the groups well-being. That
means, among many other things, treating your theater management with respect
for the sake of those who may or may not start a show at that same theater
after yours is over. Don't be so selfish when it's not just YOU or your own
town you should be concerned with. You don't go running around with a
machette, hacking your way through obstacles with no concern for the blood you
shed. What if a mis-treated manager were to leave a theater and go to a
different one? His RHPS stigma goes with him, so now you have TWO theaters
who won't play Rocky. Or ANY AP movie, which includes Shocky, and Hedwig
actually. This applies not only to both sides of the pond, but
internationally as well. People DO move, you know. They DO travel out of the
country and live elsewhere sometimes, and they take their skills with them.
I'm not saying the chances for that are really huge, but it is a possibility.
Even a slim possiblity must be taken into consideration. And it's not just
the managers who can be left with the sour taste of asshole in their mouths.
Distributors, owners, even theater-goers can be affected by a nappy-ass
attitude. And theater-goers travel from all over. We get visitors from Japan
on a bi-yearly basis or so. And from the distant, mysterious land of Arizona
more often than that! ;)
Pardon the tirade, Dave. YOU have integrated yourself into the group really
well, as far as I can see. And that's all anyone really needs to do.. I only
wish more people got that without having it spelled out for them on so many
occasions. Contrary to popular belief, I don't truly enjoy grinding my
stiletto into someone's face. Especially not repeatedly. But if that face is
constantly shooting me razzberries, well, prepare for spike.

The other thing people do is talk. Beyond us, there are thousands of discussion
forums on the Internet. One of the ones I happen to frequent is for people
interested in movie projection. Around Halloween a few years ago, a topic came
up about "How was your rocky horror showing" and one of the early posters told
a story of his negative experiences with rocky horror in the past - including
rude patrons, snotty kids who thought they were profesional actors, and flaming
toilet paper. There was a theatre locally who I had been hoping might do Rocky
Horror for a benefit show (in that they are a huge palace theatre like the
Orpheum). The projectionist and film booker is a regular on this forum and he
posted in reply "Well I guess we won't be doing any of that at my theatre."
I have since opened him up to the idea by showing him our website and how we
treat the Screening Zone (better than the management does most times). But he
is still very wary.
Lesson being that there is a symbiotic relationship between us and the theatre
managers. If we start to poison that relationship it sucks for everyone in the
community not just the folks in our own little petri dish. Nothing spreads
faster than a bad reputation.

Even in our previous theaters, we had a pretty good relationship with our
theater management and owners. hell, we have an "Antjuan Appreciation Night"
coming up. Antjuan is the guy who tears everyone's tickets for the show and
until we came along, had NO idea what to expect. he is the guy we deal with
most on a weekly basis, and we treat him with courtesy and respect, and he
bends over backwards trying to help out with anything we need. Like the one
time our sound system crapped out, so we had to use the theater's system. This
involved giving a theater employee a walkie-talkie, and then que her on when to
hit the next track on the cd while locked in the theater office for about 30
minutes or so. Last night the theater CANCELLED a movie so that we could come
in and rehearse and set up for Clue. This means, they gave up their regular
paying customers.

Kevin, I dislike people who don't think about the effects their actions have on
others. I dislike people who don't CARE about those effects even more. You
have been made aware of the possible effects of your actions, and you say you
honestly don't care, you're going to do it anyway if you don't get legal
clearance. Everyone makes mistakes, but you keep making the same 'mistakes'
over and over as if you're blind.
RHPS has been around for nearly 30 years WITHOUT you, do you get that? Shocky
is lumpped together with RHPS and other shadowcast films, so you are affecting
more than the Shocky community, not that the Shocky community needs your kind
of help. There are reasons RHPS has been around so long, and some of those
reasons have to do with how we deal with our interaction from a presentation
standpoint, a distribution standpoint and a theater management standpoint. If
you find me scary, well, maybe that's because you don't seem to be thinking
ahead. If that's the only reason you have for making peace with me, that peace
will be short-lived. Think of me as a bear who's cubs are being threatened by
a rabid hyena. If you even LOOK at my 'cubs' in the wrong way, I'll rip your

If you CAN'T legitimately get it shown, DON'T SHOW IT. You have no RIGHT to
show it, and you WILL hurt more than just your own theater if you get caught.
Internalize that fact, please, out of whatever respect you may have for the
community you're claiming to be trying to help. If you can't accept that
simple requirement for the good of the community, you SHOULD find another hobby.

It's not your project I care about, so much as the affects of your actions on
the larger community. You seem to feel your actions have no bearing on the
rest of us. I'm here to tell you they DO, and you will gain NO respect from
any thinking individual in either RHPS or Shocky if you do NOT take the affects

If you posted something that didn't involve total presumptuous ignorance, maybe
you'd get more positive responses from everyone. Whenever you DO post
something that doesn't involve your ignorance, you DO receive polite

those are the kinds of people who buy tickets at my theater and I usually love

So, you're worried about being underage and drinking because you don't want to
break the law, yet you feel it's o.k. to infringe on the copyright of a film,
ripping of lord knows how many people were invovled in it's creation and
possibly getting your own theater shut down while tainting the already
precarious reputation of the community, just because you can't get someone to
let you show it legally? I believe that's the nutshell of your history. Wow,
Kevin. Better hike up your shorts - your hypocracy is poking out.
Besides-
> I didn't mean to cross anyones paths- like I said I couldn't convey my exact
> thoughts, feelings and ideas in just one post about all this- and just like
> abstract art (I am NOT comparing this to abstract art) you took my views the

You have yet to show me the right way. In fact, your every word implicates you
further. I am not a stupid person, nor am I illiterate. I have great
relationships with most people in the community. There is no one in this
community I consider to be an enemy, though I'm sure there are a few who don't
like me. That's not my concern - we're not married to eachother, we're simply
working towards the preservation of something we all value. Which puts us on
the same side of the 'war' - I won't say or do anything to hurt RHPS in their
area because it's important to keep it alive everywhere, and vice versa.
Whatever that means, you appear to be on the opposite side from the rest of us.
I'd love to gain a theatre's trust- i'm not against them, yet I'm
> looking to make Shock Treatment work without AP and without casts (well-
maybe
> sometimes) so It's harder to gain some respect.
You get what respect you give. And according to your own words,
you 'disrespect' your theater manager. According to those same words, you're
willing to disrespect this community as well.
A new cinema (well- it may be 2
> new cinemas) may be being built- maybe they'll be open to new ideas... so, in
> ways- I apologise, but some of the stufdf I think- I stand
> by......................................................................
That's the problem. You say you think - I have yet to see evidence. Don't
steal in our name, don't ask us to HELP you steal in our name, don't
disresepect any theater in our name, don't assume everyone hates their theater
manager or that we're at war. If you are doing anything invovling RHPS or
Shocky, you're doing it IN OUR NAME because that's how the management will see
it. These are a few things off the top of my head that you, Kevin, need to
correct in your thinking.
Until then, PLEASE, for the good of the rest of us, do NOT run Shocky without
the legal right to do so. Otherwise, you will be greatly contributing to the
demise of RHPS, Shocky and whatever else in your own area. According to you,
it's dying anyway. Why help it along?

Jesus Christ- it's hard having to speak to the

That's nice. You come across as an ignorant, selfish fool, Kevin. I just sent
a note back to the private email you sent me, further explaining my intentions
with you. I had intended to just cut and paste it as response to your latest
post (since you told me you responded here as well as in private) but it
doesn't seem to apply anymore. It was much too kind. So, I'll just wing it
and hopefully you can continue emailing me in private so as not to further
disrupt the newsgroup with your selfish ignorance. But somehow I doubt you
have the self control. As of the end of this post, I wash my hands of you in
this particular thread. (and the crowd goes wild!)
I posted you seem 'like a scary person to make an enemy
> of' as a fleeting statement-
You seem to fall victim to your own fleeting statements too often. Maybe you
should look into that. You keep kicking your own ass, and while I admire your
flexibility, the end results don't justify the stretching.
not literally meaning you're a Mean Green slut
> from outer Space (Then, maybe we wonder).
You're the only one who's wondering, so I assume you're using the royal 'we'.
I've simply argued with you. A slut would have sex with you. Unless you're
getting off on my words, I'm not a slut. And if you ARE getting off on my
words, you owe me money. If I'm going to be a slut, I'm going to be an
expensive one.
I said now I wouldn't EVER do
> anything illegal- did you miss that sentence, and I said if I couldn't ge tit

> something illegal-
Must have been buried amidst the rest of the ignorant, indignant tripe you
posted. Another aspect of being 'young, dumb and full o' cum'. It took
someone repeatedly slapping you in the face to get you to say you'd never do
anything illegal for Shocky. So you've actually taught me a lesson - Kevin
needs to be slapped before he sees reason.
you're bringing material from the past and from other posts
> into this article- yet at first we were only MEANT to be discussing THIS
post!
Welcome to the RHPS newsgroup, Kevin! If you post it, it's fair game in just
about any thread if it's pertinent. And here you go again telling me what's
appropriate. I thought you'd learned a little something. I do take advice,
when the person giving it isn't an ignorant person who stands to learn vastly
more than they have to teach.
You create an image of yourself by the words you type online. That's a blanket
statement which applies to ALL online forums. All of your words merge to form
an impression of you and your thought process, so it's perfectly fair of me to
bring your own words back into play when they further my points in a
discussion. What, do you not stand by them just because it's a different
thread? It's not hypocracy if it's a different thread, is that how it works?
And you say you post to other newsgroups. You should know better, Kevin.
> You didn't make it clear you were introducing other posts into this argument.
Why should it matter? Are they your words? So they're not relevant even
though they further our understanding of your position about Shocky? If you
can't stand by your own words online, maybe you should resort to smoke
signals. They're less permanent, and therefore easier to deny.
> Now you're just so pissed of that you take it, overanalyse it (and stupidly
> over-analyse it)
I'm not pissed, Kevin. I'm concerned an idiot is flailing around another
country, basically 'going renegade' and selfishly, SELFISHLY trying to get his
own way at our expense. I don't believe that's overanalysis, I believe that's
self-defense. I think you have a deep terror of logic. Logic is not your
friend as you've made clear in this thread and *gasp!* several others.
Check the last sentence of this very message I'm responding to, and you'll see
I'm not the one who'se having an emotional fit (OK?) My calm comes from logic
and experience, while your angst and frustration come from being so sure you're
right, and repeatedly being hit in the face with how wrong you are. That train
just keeps knocking you down, Kevin. Yet you are still on the tracks. Is your
heart beating faster? Are you shaking with anger? I'm not, Kevin.
> and try to turn it around to make me sound evil!
I'm not twisting your words. I've used quotes whenever possible, and anyone
reading this can hunt down those other threads and read your drivel for
themselves. MANY more people agree with me than you know, they just don't have
the desire to get into the mud with you. I happen to own a snorkel. I don't
believe I'm making you sound 'evil'. I think I'm trying to apply a certain
logic to your words to make them more understandable to those who can't wade
thru your lack of punctuation. I'm trying to add continuity to your mania.
You aren't sounding evil - you're sounding self-riteously ignorant. You're
sounding dangerous.
Then you go
> on to say rocky horror's survived 30 years without me,
And that's incorrect HOW?
it's survived thirty
> years without everyone but richard o'brien,
Try making sense sometimes. It may help you fool people into believing you're
an intelligent person.
it's a fanbase collectively that
> makes the success (though now it's only really more successful on
stage 'rocky
> horror show')
You are so incredibly ignorant! Your assumption that it's dying out is based
on your own tiny corner of it. It's NOT dying in many other places, Kevin.
From my perspective, it's experienced an upswing. MI's audiences are in the
comfortable triple-digits every Saturday and have been for a while now. We're
not the only ones. Maybe it salves your conscious to believe you're helping a
dying phenomenon (all hail Kevin!), but get out of the clouds. You make these
absolutely IDIOTIC statements from a base of total ignorance and you demand
respect? Get your head out of your ass, Kevin, the tenseness of your sphincter
is squeezing the logic from your brain.
Of course it's the fans that make it successful. What group of people do you
think you're talking to? Do you think we're Fox executives? We're FANS, Kevin!
I'm not trying to take over and run the show- you're making it

I am interpreting your intentions from your own words, Kevin. Stop typing -
you have no understanding of the language.
i apologised, "let us

HAHA!!! You're a moron. An absolute moron. I came into this specific message
after responding to your private email (which you didn't hose down with
testosterone like you did this one) thinking you've started talking sense. I
come to find a pitiful little boy sitting in the corner and throwing a fit. I
can't even relate to you.
you
> shant pay with apology, but with blood"
How about a little SINCERITY? I don't respond well to idiocy, lunacy or
selfishness.
I apologised, yet you're still throwing
> it all back-
When someone tosses me a Frisbee, far be it from me to interrupt the game.
>i said I took alot of what you may mave misinterpreted back, OK!
Yet you keep tossing it out there.
Tell ya what, Kevin. Out of the kindness of my heart, well, let's be honest
here - out of sheer PITY, I won't respond to whatever else you choose to post
here. I'll let you have a spasm again, if you truly want to. I will give you
the last word. Value it - it's not often I allow someone like you to go
running free. But since you're so totally convinced I'm the only one who feels
this way about you, I'll let others step up and take the reigns if they choose
to. If they do NOT, don't take that as proof I'm the only one who feels this
way. I have several private emails that prove the contrary. Most people don't
like digging in the garbage with idiots. I consider it recreation if it's for
the common good.
Have at it, but stop sobbing and for Gods sake, get out of the corner. It's
pitiful.

I'm posting this with Kevin's permission (which he gave me in this very
exchange) so you all can see what I'd INTENDED to post, and what he said to
promt that reaction from me. What he said in PRIVATE, mind you.
My response is at the top, his original email to me is at the bottom. I'm
including the tag information so no one thinks I'm just making it all up. You
all know I'm a big liar anyway, right?

Subject: Re: rocky horror newsgroup.....
To: "kevin mccluskey" <mew64...@yahoo.co.uk>
Hi, Kevin. Yes this is my address, I just hate spam.
As you and many others know, my penis is large enough
without ordering a pump or pills, so spam is useless
to me.
I'm sure you have good intentions. But when so many
people (and I am certainly NOT the only one) try to
tell you your actions stand to greatly harm the rest
of us, and you insist your actions won't have that
effect even though those who have more experience than
you do KNOW they will, what do you expect us to do?
Sit back and let you learn from your own mistakes when
your mistakes have already been made by others and
we've already suffered thru the consequences?
The problem with Shocky and Rocky is that they are
seen to attract the negative elements of society. We
have been fighting that image for decades now, on many
different fronts. It takes only ONE person to bring
our public image down past where we've worked so hard
as a group to raise it. The media absolutely adore
printing stories about Rocky Horror, especially if
they're inflammatory.
I have asked all along that you respect the group.
That's all I or anyone else has ever asked of you. You
seem to be starting to, and I hope that lasts. Have
you noticed the only negative responses you get from
me or anyone else have to do with your posts about
your thoughts on theater management and legality
issues? The rest of your posts have received a normal
response from all, including myself.
Yes, I am a volatile, analytical person. I have every
reason to be when I sense our little world is being
threatened. A threat from a person with good
intentions is worse than one from one with negative
intentions. Because the negative person KNOWS they're
doing wrong. The person with good intentions first
has to be convinced they're wrong, and that's not
easy.
I'm happy being friends with everyone. Contrary to
your experiences with me, I'm really a very positive
and happy person who truly dislikes making enemies.
Oh, yeah, laugh now! ;)
That does NOT mean I'm a pushover or an idiot. I'm an
entertainer, Kevin. It's my job to help our audience
laugh every week. It's my job to take them away from
the troubles of the world and give them a safe place
to scream so they can face their week in a more stable
state of mind. Rocky Horror means that much to some
of us. But as a Director of my cast, as a
longstanding and respectful member of this community,
it's also part of my job to protect this phenomenon
for future generations to enjoy. Sometimes that means
grabbing people by the elbows and shaking some sense
into them.
I'm truly sorry it's dying in your area. If I could
come out there and help you get a Shocky or RHPS
theater off the ground (and you decided to go about it
the legal way), I would. All I can do is attempt to
advise you. If you choose not to take that advice,
that's usually fine, it's your choice and I have no
problem with that. But when your decision stands to
negatively impact something so many thousands of
others have called 'home' for 30 years, that's where
'advice' becomes 'demand'. I hope you understand
that.

You'll find many of us here (myself most certainly included) are more than a
little verbose. This is largely due to the way people here respond. It's a
damned good idea to make yourself as clear as crystal, or people will quickly
point out the spots.
>I AM going to try
>however, posting a letter to the theatre manager (if I can find who it is-

The only one that will ever work is the one where you tell him (or her) that it
will make them money. If you can't guarantee that... forget it. Get the butts
in the seats and you'll find a print in the theater, period.
>most
>theatres and fans 'THINK' or 'Prejudge' (sorry for the quotes) that Shock
>Treatment will flop,
Well, that's largely true. The only reason it has any sort of following here
like it does is because we've taken a liking to floorshowing it like Rocky.
It's a nice change... but it's also a bitch to do. You can pull off Rocky
Horror with 6 or 7 and not look exceedingly bad.... you need more like 20 to do
Shocky...
The movie, shown by itself is rather unremarkable. (Actually, I don't
personally think so, but I do realize I'm demented. I can see where it would be
boring for others.) When done with a cast, with a rabid audience playing the
audience and singing along to songs and shouting the occassional line...
It's something quite different.
>I however,
>if I was given the chance, would try my abslute complete best to make Shock
>Treatment work;
In which case, I'd try to drum up interest from others. Forget the venue for
the moment. Try to work up a cast. Have some rehearsals. Make costumes. Go to
popular places where "the cool kids" go. (Where DO the cool kids go in Ireland,
anyway?) Go in costume. Talk to people. Offer to do parties. Go to parties. The
key is proving to your prospective theater owner you are serious, and you can
make them money. (There's that damned word again)
>If I devote some holiday to the
>project I really must give a damn..
Or you must not be able to think of anything else to do. Don't confuse
resolution with boredom.
>you said I shouldn't give advice cos I'm new to it-
Not because you're new. Because your opinions are generally not of the
particularly highest caliber. (It is REALLY difficult not to snark out here,
I'm chompin' at the bit!) The issue is not that you're new and want to
contribute. That's understandable, and even admirable. The issue is that you
(like many others who come to this little sanitarium of bandwidth) don't take
the time to have basic understanding of the things we discuss before jumping in
(It's that whole "look before you leap" thing again.)
>it sounds like you're becoming high and mighty- and
>because you're a fan longer makes you a better fan, maybe in ways yes-
I don't agree being a fan longer makes you a "better" one. In the big picture,
I'm a bit of a baby in this group. I got into the film in 1990, but didn't
start performing and going to the show until 1995. Many many MANY people on
this group outstrip me in years. But that doesn't mean squat, really. We're all
here, and that's that. I don't consider anyone greater or lesser.
Instead... I see it as people I like, and people I don't.
but a
>fanbase shouldn't become reclusive to 'newbies'- should it?
Again you miss the point. We are not unreceptive to "newbies". If we were, our
numbers would be far less. We were all "newbies" once. I read this group long
long LONG before I ever posted in it. I read, watched, and understood how
things worked before grabbing for my keyboard.
>(Note- alot of people have mentioned they're drunk while posting- me, not
>wanting to break the law- am never drunk)
That must suck. I'll have one in honor of you.
And another one for.... um... *shrug* I'll think of something.
>I'd love to gain a theatre's trust- i'm not against them, yet I'm

As I mentioned above... good luck. I am a fan of ST. I would enjoy just sitting
and watching the movie... but even among Rocky fans... the people like me are
severely limited. You need to make it an event, or it will not work.

Try looking at this: http://members.tripod.com/~irishrocky/main.htm
and then at this: http://www.rockyscot.com/otherpages/review6.htm
When I reread that review about a year after I wrote it, I felt pretty lousy
for giving such a bad crit, when really this show caters very well to the
wants and needs of its own regular audience. For a visiting RH fan, however,
I think my review summed it up pretty much as it was.
Still, a lot can happen in 3 years, and for all I know their show could now
be completely different. If you do go, please let us know how it went.

I kinda hate to post this, as I try very hard to get along with everyone in
the Rocky community. If, however, my silence, and that of others, is being
taken as agreement with Kevin's posts, that's not OK. So I felt I had to
say something.
It seems, at least in the email Becky quotes below, that Kevin is coming

who are willing to learn from their mistakes, and willing to admit they've
