Sometime in 1991 (or was it 1992) it was finally announced that ROTOQ would be
shelved and that there are no immediate plans in the future to film it.
In 1990 RHPS's future was uncertain, the video was just coming out and
performers, and I think if they were being honest with themselves, Fox weren't
sure what the release would do to the theatrical run of the film. In fact,
the possibility at the fan level was always brought up the film would die out.
From what I understand of this period, attendance temporarily rose and then
fell to levels that are now reasonably steady. (Mind you this is
interpretation -- if anyone knows any FACTS post them in a reply.)
It's 1998... we still have about 80 or so theaters showing Rocky (down from a
peak of 250 in about 1979) and without any special promotion, the film is
chugging along to a major anniversary -- 25th. This alone gives some impetus
for a sequel.
However, another two movies, both starring Will Smith and one of those from
20th Fox, also give impetus to an idea for a Rocky sequel. Let me quote a
press release about another upcoming sci-fi parody, "The Hitchhiker's Guide To
The Galaxy."
"For nearly 20 years, I went around saying there's this great
science-fiction comedy where earthlings and aliens mingle,
and they'd say yes, maybe, no," said Victor. "But after
'Men in Black,' they were all asking 'how can I get a sci-fi
comedy where earthlings and aliens mingle,' and there it is,
laying in the road like a golden nugget."
There aren't too many films that would fall into that category... but ROTOQ
certainly would.
Fox also is on the verge of success. Except for "Speed 2" (godawful film),
Fox didn't have a bad year making a dent into Disney's market, re-releasing
Star Wars, the Full Monty (last year's most profitable film in terms of
percentage), another Alien movie (a good one this time), and of course getting
the international, Non-US gross b.o. of the overblown, boring "Titanic."
Not to mention that in 1999, Star Wars chapter one will come out.
I think Fox will welcome a cheap, high potential box-office return (can we
say "Full Monty"), science fiction film (particularly if they can promote it
as a trailer on the Star Wars rental casette or even show its trailer before
the inevitable next Alien movie.)
And from what I heard in gossip back in the early 90s, it was royalty issues
related to RHPS that killed ROTOQ.
A last factor is Richard O'Brien's visibility is going up, even if only
slightly. Bostwick (assuming he plays Steve) is also more noticeable in Spin
City. Meatloaf and Curry will continue to give RHPS indirect possibility as
will Sarandon, more popular than ever after an Oscar win.
But *IF* it's going to happen, it will be in Year 2K ...or not at all.

I want to see it get made but Richard certainly doesn't. If he
doesn't want to go ahead with ROTOQ than what's the fucking point? I
certainly hope that Barry doesn't play Steve. I'd like to see Steve
played by someone younger. He is supposed to be Brad's younger
brother after all. I also don't wanna see Curry play The Old Queen.
He is Frank. Someone new would be more desireable. How about Betty
White? Or mabey Mink Stole? I can't even figure out how Meatloaf
would fit into the movie. I do agree with Sarandon's cameo, though.
That would draw more people to see it.
I think that the most desierable situation would be for ROTOQ to be
scrapped. However, I would love to see Richard write another musical
for screen. Imagine, a whole new story coming from that imaginative
mind to entertain us. Now this is an idea that could happen. A new
muscal by Richard O'Brien on the big screen for 2000.

Again read the part of "....aliens and humans mingling." Both these films
(and you are correct, ID4 was the other film I was thinking of) have that in
common with a ROTOQ script.

Who said Richard DOESN'T want to see it made? I agree if that's his wish then
so be it. A Rocky sequel should only come from Richard, at least in his
lifetime (I could see Sal writing one and having it produced when he is 70!)
I think, but could be mistaken (it's been known to happen) that Richard didn't
care for that DRAFT that he did of ROTOQ.

Maybe, then again I didn't read the script that closely...I *HATED* IT!
The self-referential Rocky stuff really bothered me.

Why would it have to be a transvestite? And why Curry?

Now THAT idea I like. How about a film version of "Disgracefully Yours?"

Uh oh let's not start this thread again.

Yeah, you are. Richard said that he didn't want ROTOQ made at all
becuase it would make it into too much of a "Soap Opera" and he
fancied RHS as a "Modern Fairy Tale".

I've heard that DY is more of a cabaret style review show. It doesn't
sound like it has a plot, it just has Richard singing and joking with
an audience for a few hours. This wouldn't be an interesting movie.
Why not just release a "recorded live" video verison of an actual
performance of the play? As for Richard writing a new musical for
screen, it would be cool if it was a
brand-new-never-before-seen-even-on-stage movie, with big screen
sensibillities, kinda like ST.

Wait. Wait. You're implying there's anything sensible about that movie?
But as to the thing about DY, word 'round the campfire says that some of those songs will be released on an album
sooner or later.
