After watching most of Cronenberg's films it dawned on me that his films are
very dark, in a literal sense. It seems to me they are filled with night time
imagery and contain very few bright scenes. His style is definitely
recognizable. I like the way he creates a <ahem> brooding atmosphere.
Of the films I have seen, the one that just doesn't fit is M. Butterfly. What's
the deal, there? Also, (oh boy are you gonna hate me for this!) I really didn't
care much for Naked Lunch. I sat in the theater with lots of people around me
laughing and chuckling over various scenes while I sat there going "huh?" It
just seemed kind of pretentious. Maybe it was just the "hip and trendy"
Burroughs crowd which it attracted that most Cronenberg films certainly don't.
Pee-yoo. Maybe I should give it another chance on video.
Scanners, however, I have seen many times and always love it! You gotta love a
guy who drills a hole in his own head! And of course, Dead Ringers is a classic
in every sense. What a film!
