* pumpkin seeds from 1 or more pumpkins
* 1 tablespoon butter
* salt
Wash the pumpkin seeds to remove all the pulp, and place in a bowl.
Melt the butter in a pan and then pour, bit by bit, into the nuts,
tossing while you go. The key is not to use too much butter, but just
enough to lightly coat the seeds. Smaller pumpkins may require less
than 1 tablespoon of butter, larger ones more. Add salt. Preheat the
oven to 250F; spread the seeds out over a baking pan and bake, turning
occasionally, until crisp and lightly golden browned. Overcooking
causes the nuts to toughen and lose flavor.
American Indian Variation
Wash the pumpkin seeds thoroughly, and place them in a bowl. Cover
with cold water to which just enough salt has been added that it is
still drinkable, and let soak overnight. Drain the seeds, place them
on a cookie sheet, and cook in a low oven -250 F- until they are crisp
and golden brown.

Who needs a metalic taste in food? It might help it cling but it isn't that

stores. You usually put the salt on a stake in the field and the animals
lick it as needed. If animals do not have salt blocks they eat soil with
salt in it which is why the deer can be seen licking the dirt road in some
places. Iodine on the other hand is added to salt for people to prevent
goiter. Animals if given too much loose salt can die from salt poisoning
but there is a blue loose salt for horses that used to be fed back in the
50's because it contains worm medicine and pig feed used to and might still
contain salt. Pigs have to have water with it when given that type of feed
or they can be in serious trouble. I believe James Herriots - spelling -
books had a story about that in one of them if anyone is familiar with them.

they needed the minerals and not because they craved the taste or solely as
a treat. My father didn't have money to waste on treats for the livestock.
You're right about iodized salt being dangerous to animals, especially in
large quantities. A great grandmother of mine had a cow that ate a whole
bag of salt somebody left on a window ledge. The cow passed on and great
granny was pretty upset as it was one of her favorite milk cows. I'd hate to
see that happen to anyone else's pet or livestock.
As for the iodine, they put it in the salt to make sure nobody gets
goiter or has problems with their thyroid which can happen in cases of
iodine deficiency.
