BANNING, Calif. - A Southern California wildfire has raged through 2 1/2
square miles of Riverside County, while wind-fanned fires also are scorching
parts of wine country north of San Francisco.
The fast-moving wildfire about 90 miles east of Los Angeles broke out just
after noon. Winds of 29 mph have been driving the fire westward through
largely undeveloped foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, but it is
dangerously close to subdivisions to the south, in the city of Banning.
Fire officials say more than 400 firefighters are working to gain control of
the blaze with the help of six water-dropping helicopters and six air
tankers. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of a mobile home park,
where there are about 200 homes, and two streets in Banning.
Much of Southern California is under red flag warnings for fire danger due
to heat, wind and low humidity levels.
To the north, the Yellow Fire in Sonoma County is less than half contained
after burning 125 acres. The Silverado Fire in Napa County has burned a
smaller area and was 75 percent contained.
