In Texas we have lost hurricanes in ranch country before and not had to
worry about them but others have hit populated cities and have done a lot of

There's been a lot of flooding this year in the midwest.
It would be nice if we could send a little of that rain
to Tucson, where fires have done so much awful
damage.

Thank you, I am TUGGING for those closer to the sea than we are. There are
currently hurricane warnings to High Island which is down near Galveston
which is about 100 miles straight south of me. They have already officially
recommended evacuation of the western end of Galveston Island so some people
living there are spending a few days in town here until the storm passes.
High tides are supposed to be 3 to 5 feet higher than predicted normally.
Point Bolivar is also being evacuated as they are expecting low level
flooding as the water comes in through the sand. There is a Texas
Department Of Transportation (TEXDOT) ferry that runs from Point Bolivar to
Galveston Island day and night usually. You drive your car right onto the
boat from the dock at the end of the road so that should give you and idea
how low the land is.
When you drive down the highway on the way to the dock you can smell the sea
and see water on both sides of the road behind high dike like banks at
times. It seems as though any high spot along the road has a building for
vacationers or an exclusive club or something of the sort and there is a
motel right at the end by the dock. One evening before Christmas I rented a
room there with a non working heater upstairs over the little store run by
an Indian family at that time. I watched the ferry from my room and the
next morning I took it across to Galveston.
We will probably have thunderstorms with occassional tornadoes. They have
already been having waterspouts - tornadoes over water that draw up water
rather than land debris - over the ocean today near Galveston and the surf
is up. I expect rain off and on over the next few days as a lot of moisture
is already working its way into the area. Until we know where the hurricane
actually comes ashore we won't know who will be affected or for how long but
the farther east it comes the more people there are to be rained on.
We have a golden triangle of population with Dallas at the top, Houston and
San Antonio at the corners.

Yes, that would be helpful. I have family in Tucson and other parts of
Arizona near there so I know they almost always need more water in the
state.

I'll TUG for that also and that if there are any that have to be higher they
end up in the coastal ranches hundreds of miles from buildings. The King
Ranch alone takes up whole counties so there is plenty of room to lose a
hurricane down there. That general area is where Claudette was originally
supposed to go ashore but it has moved several hundred miles farther east
instead.
I will also TUG for your flooding to recede and only the rain you need to
come for the rest of the year.

people and nowhere for the water to drain out of the way.

Up in a spiral I think, then..ouch! A large hail-stone sends Squirrel
side ways in a long fast slant. Squirrel is eyeing the sky..er
sea...no wait- sky!...ummm seaa. The breeze is picking up. A seagull
cackles nearby, and sails a current to the right. The suddenly the
rain comes down. A now drenched squirrel is clinging on tight to the
kite, and really hoping that isn't thunder in the distance. The
seagull cackles again and drops away to the sea....

the alternate effects of the hurricane. The tide will be high and might cause

from nowhere. Those tornadoes will do more damage than the hurricane. The
storm surges on the coast will do more damage than the hurricane. As for the
winds, they will take siding off the sides of houses and send them like
projectiles ... so please stay at home and not be outside or at the beach
trying to surf the waves. That is stupid and unsafe. I've seen too many
people drown here in Florida from high surf (even if we don't get a hurricane,
we do get some of the effects from the hurricane).
I actually see parents taking their babies to the beaches to see the ocean
during these times. That is just completely idiotic and dangerous. Please do
not risk the lives of children just to get a closer look at the roughness of
the seas.
And, yes ... as your subject line indicates, people parasail as well as surf
during these times. So if anyone wishes to do such a stupid act, please make
sure you have life insurance. And please remember to put on the beneficiary

I am TUGGING for the people near San Antonio which is the closest large
city, Port Lavaca which is a very nice little town, Victoria which is also a
nice city, and people through the area. Some of the people moved there from
here around last Christmas so they can teach school and others have over the
last few years after graduating from Texas A&M. We are fine here but it is
windy enough vans are getting blown around at only 40mph going down the
road.

m.p.h. at this moment and they expect it to be downgraded to a tropical storm
(maximum speeds up to 35 mph) by morning.
Sadly, I just heard of one fitality from Claudette. I mentioned earlier that
people should stay indoors and not venture into a storm like this. ANYTHING
could and does happen. This time, it happened to a 13 year old child who was
standing on the street as a tree fell on top and killed that child instantly.
Tugs go out from me to the family of that child. I don't know where the
parents were, but to allow their child outside during a hurricane was stupid.
Even though it was weakening and didn't seem too threatening, it is still a
hurricane and can do terrible things.
A tropical storm is just as fierce even though the winds are between 35mph and
50mph. There is still tornadic activity within the area. Nobody knows how old
their trees are. Some are very weak from age and a gust of 35-50mph can cause
it to fall. Please do not risk your life and <u>especially</u> the lives of
your children by going outside during this or any severe storm.
Most people have the idea stuck in their head that bad things only happen to
the other person. How many times have you said "thank goodness it didn't hit
closer to home"? But think about it ... the next time a tragedy can hit you
and/or your family and someone else will be uttering the words "thank goodness
it didn't closer to <b>my</b> home." Don't take chances especially if you have
your family with you in a dangerous situation. There might not be a tomorrow to
utter your regrets.
I'm still tugging for anyone still in the path of Claudette. May you be safe
and sound during your sleeping hours. If you have to be outside, please take
precautions. If you don't have to be outside, stay indoors until it's all
over.

Dear Rita, Treebeard and our group:
First, I want to say I'm grateful that Claudette turned out to be something
less than a full-blown hurricane. Unfortunately there are, as Rita points
out, many hazards in such a storm. I remember in my own state of Michigan,
we had a fatality a few years ago when a wind-blown tree fell onto a house
and tragically, someone was killed in their own bed. Downed power lines
are another hazard too. And of course all people living in storm-affected
regions must be aware of the possibility of tornadoes.
I offer my condolences to the two families those in Texas who unfortunately,
lost loved ones owing to falling trees or tree limbs.
I'd like to end this somber post on a lighter note. It so happens that
the authorities saw fit to call this storm Claudette, which brings back
memories of a prominent actress, Claudette Colbert, whom we lost a few
years ago at age 92.
If there are enough tropical storms and hurricanes this year to make
it necessary to go to the letter 'K' in naming one of them, I hope the
name Katherine will be used.
From what I've read about her, Katherine Hepburn could be tempestuous
at times. :)

Yes, that is why I didn't just put the link in. It would have been changed
or no longer working by the time anyone had a chance to look at the
hurricane forcast. Only two of the 4 weather forcasts were still being
shown early this morning.
Of course a lot of people are saying that the Weather service understated
the severity of the storm. They also kept trying to say that it was going
to turn farther west and come in near Brownsville but instead it came up to
Victoria and caused more problems than most category 2 storms seem to do.
This is the second Hurricane Claudette by the way. They reuse the names
until they retire them. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml should
take you to a list of names for use through 2008.

Actually it was officially a category 1 hurricane when it hit our coast and
a lot of people say that it was close to a category 2 hurricane.

The one hazard that will kill quickly is hail. People are even killed in
hail storms without hurricanes. That is why I stopped our parasailing
alt.cuddle race when hail was mentioned, the end results of a hail storm are
never good and I have seen hail so heavy and large sized that it looks like
snow drifts on the ground. I kept some hail stones large enough to fill the
palm of my hand for a while in the freezer but they eventually are eroded
away by the frost free system just as ice cubes are.
I remember in my own state of Michigan,

We are having left over thunderstorms at the moment and probably will for a
few more days. There is a 20 percent chance of it and the one here is very
loud but not too bad.

74,000 people are waiting for electricity to be restored and our Attorney
General is warning against price gouging. A number of counties have been
designated disaster areas, the nearest to us is a five hour drive each way.
Texas is 800 miles by 600 miles if I remember correctly, which is why we can
absorb some hurricanes without damage as long as they are away from the
cities. The damage occurs when they come in in the mid to eastern part of
the state or in Brownsville. There is a 2 or 300 mile area where they do
little damage but once they get inside the population triangle things get
bad.
We haven't heard from Tim or Princess Julie yet as far as I know and they, I
think, are closer to the worst damage than I am. Near here we had beach
errosion and flooding 100 miles south on roads and some buildings but the
deaths were closer to Sir Timothy.
I believe all of us appreciate the TUGS because we know they work.

Treebeard wishes Squirrel the Best Of Luck and goes in search of the poor
seagull while letting Squirrel get back where she was now that he knows
Squirrel was safe after all. As long as the hail is gone all should be
well. Hail is bad and dangerous but luckily it is gone and there is still
plenty of storm to ride.
The seagull seems to have found a safe haven so Treebeard catches a small
gale and rides up higher and higher cutting figure eights glad that he is
not a bird. Birds are designed so they can not help but fly when headed
into the wind and they can ride thermals but strong winds tend to blow them
off course so they end up on the masts of ships at sea, so do some
butterflies.
As soon as he gets high enough he swoops down beside Squirrel waving and
catching as much wind as possible to speed ahead. As he gets lower he loses
speed so he heads up again for more altitude and another stoop like a falcon
picking up more speed along the way.

I thought I would mention that I did get an email from Julie. She, Tim and
Wesley have been in Iowa since the 4th of July so they were nowhere near the
hurricane. They are coming back on Sunday so they will be able to check for
damage at that time.
So please don't worry about our postmaster and his family. All are on vacation
and having a wonderful time.

That is great. One friend lost an oak her Great Grandparents planted but
the others made it through. They have no running water so are having to
water the animals on the ranch from cistern water as long as it will hold
out. Governor Perry is going to view the area tomorrow and hopefully power
will be restored within a week or two. The last of the storm seems to be
around El Paso now and going into Mexico so it will be soon rained out.
We had a clear warm day today but are watching storms that might move over
us tomorrow. These storms are unrelated to the hurricane but the hurricane
left overs are still pulling Gulf moisture into the state so it might add to
the storms we get next if they make it this far.
I understand the HEB grocery store in Victoria had its roof peeled off. I
can only imagine what the store must smell like if they haven't gotten
electricity back there or do not have a generator. The meat and milk and
things without refrigeration would not be healthful. Here's hoping they
have a generator.

It's hard for everyone in a hurricane. Generators only last for a few hours
and not days. Farmers need power to milk their cows ... poor cows. And how
about restaurants? They have lots of cold meat which could spoil.
Time to get out the solar panels again.
Most grocery stores have large refrigerators. In most cases (even in homes) if
you keep the doors closed, a refrigerator can keep the inside temperature cold
for several days. But when people get insurance, they are covered for
spoilage. I'm sure that mostly everything from HEB will be considered
contaminated regardless. So the stuff gets thrown away no matter if it's in
the fridge or not.
I remember when Hurricane Gloria hit us in Massachusetts. We lost power for 6
days. All the neighbors had a block party and barbecued all the defrosted
meats from the freezer. We had no other choice.

It sounds as though you made it through hurricanes quite well. I imagine
whoever is milking cows is doing it by hand, ouch, milking just one by hand
when you aren't used to it causes pain and cramps. Can you imagine milking
20 or 30 twice a day?
I wonder what the whiskey and beer makers are doing to cold brew beer and
don't they have to distill alcohol? It is amazing how much we use
electricity.

Thank you those TUGS worked because there were only two deaths and that
storm was a lot worse than the news was saying. This is from a story put
out by AP in our local media on Friday, (Port Lavaca-AP) -- Some wind
measurements of Hurricane Claudette show it could posthumously be bumped up
in classification. That's no surprise to residents along the middle Texas
coast who endured the storm. The National Hurricane Center will spend the
next few weeks studying and verifying data -- some of which includes
Category two-strength winds -- before it makes a final designation. We, in
this part of the state, were only on the edge of it but Victoria and that
section of Texas was hit badly by the storm and is still cleaning up after
the damage.
I am Tugging that this next Tropical Depression 6 does not also hit Texas
and impact the middle of the state again. Of course the ideal outcome would
be if it goes in circles out in the ocean as the other storm out there is
doing. I suspect it is moving way too fast westwards to do that though. It
could be visiting Princess Rita in 5 days but I hope not.

Every now and then my phone will ring and that delightful squeek, squeek is on
the other end of the line. He says that his phone has a "use them or lose
