A poster on another newgroup claimed that he had been a
Bail Enforcement Agent and that he had a Federal Concealed
Weapons Permit. He said that NYPD gave him a hard time once,
they apparently did not believe his permit was good in NY.

Is there such a thing as a "Federal Concealed Weapons Permit?"

I think some people claim that their Federal Firearms Dealer Permit
is a permit to carry weapons. But, not being an expert in firearms
or firearms laws, I am not sure whether there is a federal permit
that allows for carying concealed weapons in every state, regardless
of state laws on firearms.

Can anyone shed some light? Thanks.

Since there is no federal law that regulates the carrying of firearms
(thank God for the 2nd Amendment), there is no "Federal Concealed
Weapons Permit". That doesn't mean that there aren't certain people who
are thought to be authorized by the Federal Government to carry
concealed weapons. Most think that the FBI and other federal agents are
authorized by the Federal Government to CCW. Actually, that's not
true. The Federal Government can have jurisdiction only on federal
property. Therefore, if a federal agent is in a particular county,
city, or state where the state or local laws don't exempt federal agents
from the CCW laws of that jurisdiction, then the chief law enforcement
officer of that jurisdiction could prohibit such weapons carrying.
Likewise, I believe that, in most instances, a private property owner
has the right to demand that local, state, or federal law enforcement
leave their weapons 'outside', since they would be on private property.
I might be wrong on that, but at the very least, a private property
owner who exercised that right could be subject to arrest for
interfering with a law officer.

I am not a lawyer (thank goodness), but there is no Federal CCW
Permit that I'm aware of. Some people try to use an ATF FFL license as
a permit to carry a weapon. If you read your FFL (Federal Firearms
License) booklet, you see numerous warnings that the FFL is a license to
buy and sell only, not to carry. Local, state and federal agencies
exchange deputization so that officers can cross jurisdictional lines
when necessary. Sometime law officers refer to it as exchanging
letters. For instance, a narcotics task force may have all the members
deputized as US Marshals during an operation that could cross lines.
Civilians are pretty much SOL on this issue as far as I've heard.

There is NO such thing as a federal carry permit..never has never will
be. Some states honor your home state permit..but few of them will.
Can't imagine someone doing BE would claim something that wasn't
true....(nyuk nyuk nyuk)
You don't ever want a federal carry permit..do you want the feds to be in
charge of that? I think NOT....
