All I want to do is discard all of the background
image which is outside a rectangular area.

Go to that bitmap layer.
Draw a rectangle on that rectangular area.
Draw another one larger than the bitmap.
Combine the two new rectangles.
Place in front of the bitmap, fill white (or paper color), no outline.

I have created a compound graphic consisting of a scanned image with
superimposed drawn objects.  However once I finished drawing all of the
foreground objects I discovered that I really did not need the entire
background, something I could not have known until I was finished.  The only
reference to "crop" describes cropping a bit image as it is imported into
Draw.  There is a discussion of Trim, but whenever I select the background
graphic either the "Trim" button is greyed out or I am informed that "the
selected object is invalid".

Perhaps I am just confused by the terminology of Source and Target objects
in the Trim function.  All I want to do is discard all of the background
image which is outside a rectangular area.

I also tried using the "PowerClip" feature.  The problem I ran into there
was that I could not see how to control what portion of the graphic I had
created went into the "container".  I carefully drew the container rectangle
to include the portion of the graphic I wished to contain, but when I
inserted the graphic into the container, Draw put a different portion of the
graphic into the container, and I could not see how to move the container
relative to the graphic.

Got it.
Nice feature.
No more masking bitmaps for me.

Definitely the way to go

Horrible default option of Draw, go to tools/options/edit and uncheck
auto-centre new powerclip contents

I hope I understand your question?

Is your scanned image the background? If it is, try using your shape tool
and clicking once on the bitmap. You should see a node on each corner of
your bitmap. Simply drag each one inward until you've got the image cropped
the way you like it.

From there you should be able to select "crop bitmap" from the property bar
or BITMAPS>CROP BITMAP. It is not necessary to crop your new image. However,
just because you don't see that portion of your bitmap anymore, that doesn't
mean that it's not there. The information for ALL of that image is still
within your corel file. Cropping simply makes your adjustments final and
lends to smaller file sizes. I've gotten customer files that were 125 megs
that only needed to be 30.

If you go with the powerclip....
After you insert your items into the container (I'm not sure, but you might
have to group all the items together first). You should be able to right
click on the rectangle and select "edit contents". At that point everything
dissappears leaving only the container and its objects visible. Do what you
like to them and then simply right click and select "finish editing this
level".
