PSP XII Ultimate crashes in toolpaint.dll

I tried to install PSP XII 12.5 Ultimate on my PC, but it crashes with
the sibylline message "Paint Shop Pro XII has encountered a problem
and must terminate".

Doing some debugging, I saw that the error happens in toolpaint.dll
If I rename this dll, PSP starts correctly, without errors, but of
course the painting functions offered by that dll are not present in
the tools palette. I even tried to replace the dll with another taken
from a working installation on another PC, but no joy.
Any suggestions ? TNX.
