Info from (Law.net)
Police officers Kenneth Boss, Mr. Carroll, Edward McMellon and Richard
Murphy are charged with the murder of Mr. Diallo, an immigrant from
Guinea who died after being hit by 19 of 41 bullets fired by officers
looking for a suspected serial rapist. Mr. Diallo was unarmed and
standing in his apartment vestibule when he was shot to death on Feb. 4.
PUBLIC OPINION
Defense lawyers for the police said that their clients discharged their
weapons because of a mistaken belief that Mr. Diallo had a gun. All of
the officers have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court emphasized the volume of publicity around the police shooting
case, observing that (("The prospective jurors of Bronx County, and the
rest of New York City, have been subjected to an endless repetition of
the notion that the two undisputed facts, namely that 41 shots were
fired and that Mr. Diallo was unarmed, conclusively establish
defendants' guilt and are dispositive of all possible legal and factual
issues.))
-----------
My Opinion:
What little I have seen here in OH, makes the police look really bad.
While I realize that the Police are but 1 step below the criminals in
the Press, it appears to me they acted more like assassions than
"Protectors of the People" Bette

I think some of the cops were truly remorseful and shot Dialo because
they feared for their lives......how scary for them to have a cell phone
pointed at them. None should get their jobs back should they be
acquited..and the police dept. needs to give more training to officers
about when to shoot. 41 shots....they should be ashamed of themselves.
They thought they caught the rapist and that was that.
No,not all cops are bad but then we also have the Louima case going
on......want to comment????

AP 22-June-1998 12:37 EDT REF5526
Cherokee, NC (AP) -- A National Park Service Ranger was shot to death
as he checked out complaints that a man with a rifle was threatening
visitors at a scenic overlook.

Jeremiah Locust Sr., 47, of Cherokee was charged with murder this
morning in federal court in Asheville. Locust was taken into custody
Sunday evening after a four-hour search.

Ranger Joe Kolodski, 36, a Great Smokey Mountains National Park
Ranger, was shot on Sunday as he stepped out of his vehicle at the Big
Witch Overlook about 60 miles southeast of Knoxville, Tennesse. He was
killed by a shot to the chest that pierced his protective vest.

Shortly after the shooting, two other park rangers arrived at the
scene. The gunman shot out the windshield of one of the ranger's
vehicles before fleeing into the woods.

Locust was arrested at about 6:30 p.m., after a search by more than 70
park rangers, FBI agents and officers from five North Carolina
counties. A rifle believed to have been used in the shootings was
found in the woods, Park Service spokesman Bob Miller said.

Before the suspect's identity was announced, there had been rumors the
shooter could have been abortion clinic bombing suspect Eric Robert
Rudolph. Federal officials have been looking for Rudolph in the same
area of southwestern North Carolina since the bombing of a clinic in
Birmingham, Alabama, in January.

I did a simple statistical analysis of the shot percentage. Two cops had
Glocks, one had a Sig-Sauer, and i'm not sure what the 4th gun was.

That means that at minimum, they collectivly had 60 rounds that they
could have fired when the incident began, yet they only fired 41. That
works out to 68.3%. They used less than 70% of their potential fire
power. To me, that shows remarkable restraint. If this happened a few
years ago, when New York Police were only allowed to carry six shot
revolvers, a 68.3 percentage works out to a total of 16 bullets fired.

Mr. Diallo was struck 19 times. That works out to a hit percentage of
46.34, less than half. Considering the physical situation (a small
vestible) even a bad marksman should have a 70% hit percentage. That
indicates that they were in tense defensive stances, not combat stances.

If most of the misses where high (I don't know) their necks were tensed
and their heads were turned, which someone would do if they thought that
they were going to be hit by a bullet. One cop was shooting from the
ground. If most of the low shots came from his gun then it makes my body
position theory more probable.

As I wrote, I don't want to get into the Diallo debate but I thought
that I would share these numbers..........Stan

Synopsis:
On February 4, 2000, a jury was selected, and opening statements were
given on Monday, February 7, in the second trial involving the brutal
beating of Abner Louima.  In this case, the cops, Charles Schwarz,
Thomas Bruder, and Thomas Wiese are charged with obstruction of justice
based on charges by federal prosecutors that they lied about their
knowledge of Louima's beating and tried to protect other cops involved
in the brutal attack. According to federal prosecutors, Bruder and Wiese
lied to investigators in an attempt to protect Schwarz.

On Tuesday, June 7, 1999, a jury of four white women, four
white men, one Black woman, and three Hispanic men reached a verdict in
the first Abner Louima trial after 18 hours of deliberations over three
days.  Officer Charles Schwarz was convicted of beating Louima inside
a police station bathroom, then holding Louima down while another cop,
Justin Volpe, tortured him with a plunger.   Volpe entered a guilty
plea to charges against him in May, admitting that he rammed a stick
into Louima's rectum. Louima suffered severe internal injuries. Volpe
and Schwarz could have faced up to life in prison because of the sexual
nature of the assault but the judge only sentenced Volpe to 30 years in
prison.  Schwarz has not been sentenced yet.
Schwarz, along with Officers Thomas Wiese and Thomas
Bruder, also was accused of beating Louima in a patrol car en route to
Brooklyn's 70th Precinct stationhouse. Wiese and Bruder were acquitted
of these charges.    Sgt. Michael Bellomo was acquitted of lying to
cover up the false arrests of Louima and another Haitian man, Patrick
Antoine.
On February 26, 1998, the 5 New York cops were indicted
on federal civil rights charges in the case of Abner Louima, a Haitian
immigrant who was beaten and sodomized with a toilet plunger by police
in August 1997 in Brooklyn's 70th Precinct stationhouse after he was
arrested outside a nightclub.  The  12-count indictment charged
officers Justin Volpe, Thomas Bruder, Charles Schwarz, and Thomas Wiese
with civil rights and conspiracy charges for violating Louima's civil
rights.  They were charged with beating Louima in a police car after
his arrest.  Schwarz and Volpe also were charged with sodomizing
Louima in the bathroom of the 70th Precinct stationhouse during which
they shoved a toilet plunger into Louima's rectum and mouth while his
hands were handcuffed behind his back.  As a result of the attack,
Louima was hospitalized for two months with a torn bladder and
intestine.  The fifth officer, Sergeant Michael Bellomo, who was the
patrol supervisor on the night of the attack on Louima, was charged with
attempting to cover up the attack.  Bruder, Wiese and Schwartz still
face charges of conspiring to obstruct justice. They made a pact to lie
in an effort to shield Schwartz.
Bellomo and Volpe also were charged with civil rights
violations for falsely arresting Patrick Antoine, an eyewitness who was
outside the nightclub and saw Louima being taken into custody.  The
indictment also charged Volpe with beating Antoine and with obstruction
of justice for threatening Louima in an attempt to keep him from talking
about the attack.  Bellomo and Bruder also were charged with trying to
cover up Antoine's arrest by lying to FBI agents.

While these instances are sensational, it is important to remember, that
there is good and bad in all professions.
There are many Brave, hard working, Honest men, risking their lives on a
daily basis, for us.
Only the extremely Heroic, Bad, or Murdered policemen make the evening
news.
So, they must be dedicated or demented, or perhaps a bit of both to face
these challanges everyday to perform a public service.. It certainly
isn't the pay.
In the life of a cop, there is so much garbage in, from the dregs of
life they observe daily, that it shouldn't be a surprise that there is a
rat present, now and then.
