Not only has canned tuna gone up in price this past year....it now comes in
5oz cans. I could have sworn they used to be 6oz cans.
I just looked through my old 1979 copy of the "Betty Crocker Cookbook" and
they have several recipes using canned tuna. All of them called for a 6.5oz
can of tuna! I knew it! They have secretly reduced the can size over the
years.
I noticed that same thing many years ago with candy bars.
It's not secret; the weight is on the can. Canned tuna at Trader Joe's
is still 6.5 oz.

And before that they used to be 7 oz. cans.

To my surprise, Whole Foods sells its 365 brand solid white
albacore in 6 ounce cans for $1.50, which isn't too bad
considering that the best price I can find at Safeway. et
al is $1.00 for a 5 ounce can when it is occasionally on
sale, but much higher when it is not on sale.
I priced solid white at TJ's this past weekend. I'm pretty
sure it was $1.49 for a 5 ounce can.
Tuna is not the only item like that. Everyone is doing it rather than raise
prices. Soap used to be 4.5 oz bars. They are now 4 oz. Ice cream used to
be one gallon. They are now 1.75 liters. I'm sure there are lots of other
examples.
Just my 2 cents...

It's a lot more than $.02, Ron. Coffee used to be a pound.
I still buy coffee by the pound. Oh, you must be buying like Folgers
or something else already ground and packaged?
I buy beans. One good brand comes in pound bags, another in less. I use
a burr mill that I rescued and rebuilt.

The cereal makers have been doing that for years. A box shaped like a
book uses a lot more cardboard for what it holds than something
squatter. But it looks a lot bigger and has more room for gimmicks to
attract the customer's eye.

Well.....paybacks this week, folks. Starkist tuna is on sale for 50 cents
per can until next Wednesday. I plan to stock up as I do use it often
enough. I bought 4 cans today and will be back there tomorrow and get
more. I haven't seen the price this low in a long, long time.
