help with snickerdoodles

please help me. I have tried a recipe for snickerdoodles I found in a
Better Homes and Garden Recipe Book and they fell when I took them out of
the oven. When they had cooled they were chewy instead of cake like, like
the ones I have bought in the bakeries.

I don't know whether I am wrong or that I just don't understand the
recipe. When Imake gingerbread there is a layer of something just up
from the bottom of the cake. It is of a thicker texture that the
main cake. Should I melt the marg, syrup and sugar until they become
clear which will make the mixture quite hot, before adding the milk
and flour. Alternatively you could send me YOUR recipe for this enjoyable cake
