I bought a similar LG 20" last year - it had the best picture in the price
range, and has worked faultlessly.

LG have been around for years and personally I would class them as
mid-table in the list of manufacturers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG

I've never owned any of their TVs but have noticed that the ones on
display in various stores always seem to exhibit, what I think, is the
best picture in various price ranges. Maybe it is just my preference
I don't know, but it seemed to be the same in a few shops.

Try reading a couple of these for more info about that set:

It depends what the shop is showing on the TVs and how they set them
up. Side by side, the LG and Samsung series 4, the Samsung gives a
much better picture for not a lot more, but the LG has better speakers.
A lot of TVs and LCD panels are made by the same manufacturers and
badged, so what appears to be a "cheaper" make can be just as good
as one you would pay extra for a name.

That's true and obviously something I had thought about. I'd assume
that the majority of the sets in big stores, excluding the one
specifically showing HD content, all come from the same feed and have
probably had minimal, if any, settings changed to provide a 'better'
picture.

It was only that fact that after seeing sets in a few different shops
that the LG ones always seemed to be in the 'better picture' category
in my opinion.

Saying that it could all be psychological and just because I have it
in my head that is what I see!!

But you told us all not to buy LCDs, because even the models not released
yet, are stock piled in a huge warehouse (think Indiana Jones ending heh)
and they're just selling them off before releasing the awesome new type that
you made up? And also, you said LCDs were too slow, and when you watch say,
football, you can see the white trail of the ball? You also claimed to sell
them, and be a mechanic, and a police man, an a car accessories shop. You
must have very little free time...

I mean, we all new it was bullshit, and we'll never find it on GoogleGroups
cos of the amount of times you've morphed, but hey, we can remember your
dillusions fondly :-)
