Hi folks.

Please can anyone recommend a digital camera to me.
It's going to be a birthday present for my Mum's 60th.

The main criteria I'm looking for are:

1. Good picture quality (at least about 3m pixels?).
2. A decent optical zoom (about 3x?)
3. Easy to use (my mum hasn't used a digital camera before!)

I'm looking to spend up to about £150 (£200 tops).

Thanks very much in advance,
James.

Hi

The Kodak 6440 is worth a look IMHO, 4MP, 4x zoom, good user reviews.

cheers,
Pete.

Oh come on! Digitals are very easy to use and someone with the experience of
sixty years will find it a doddle. I was far older than sixty when I got my
first digital and that was because I needed a camera in a great hurry. I
used it immediately with no tutoring at all. I've never read the
instructions.

Isn't your mum worth more than that?

I'm not being critical but sixty is a pretty important birthday and one
which should be marked with something very special.

You did very well.

My mother is over sixty and if I gave her a present like that she would not
know what button to press first and instructions would probably confuse.

Me poor oll mum has just about got the hang of an instamatic! lol.

These cameras are often let down by crappy lenses and bad compression
compared to some of the 'proper' brands that can be had for similar money
i.e. Canon A70 for around 150 quid.

Many people, including 60 yr olds (!), may be let down by cameras that are
too small with bad ergonomics or poor squinty optical viewfinders. There
was only a thread a day or so back on a very similar subject where I
suggested it is worth going into a store to get a feel of the camera rather
than just buying blind based on spec.

That's another reason why buying a camera for someone else (even a thirty
year old !) isn't the best idea. Perhaps a voucher for one, take the poor
old dear out for a good meal and let her lean on you in the camera shop,
explain what a lens is, the focal length, fixed focus, smart media, button,
viewfinder, cells ..... well, everything really.

OK, I'm jesting, but the voucher and day out part is serious. I spent my
60th at a son's where we had a wonderful meal, another son bought me
something he thought was fantastic design and I'm still using it several
times a day and think of him every time, a daughter came across at great
effort from Wales, I got drunk and fell off the chair and hurt my thumb, a
son took pictures of the chair and the thumb as well as other people falling
asleep ... my point is that effort is appreciated, thought and care in
choosing presents, going to great lengths to celebrate makes for a memorable
occasion. It's known as the Year of the Thumb.

I gave the host of that party a garish plastic blowgun at last Christmas, he
takes it everywhere with him, was even using it as a viking last weekend, he
said it was the best present he'd ever had. It was very cheap but wasn't
bought for that reason, he has plenty money and can afford far more than we
can but we put a lot of thought into the choice and it was well worth it.

The OP was thinking about it too, I'm not denigrating what he did. Honestly.

Mary

I wish someone would give me a plate camera with a black cloth ...

There is such a huge market for digital cameras, I couldn't even begin to
make a suggestion regarding the best value for money.

I recently purchased a refurbished Finepix 410 direct from Fuji for my wife
who is really is hopeless with gadgets and she finds no difficulty in using
the camera.

The cameras are guaranteed for 12 months, are in absolute pristine condition
and I suspect are completely unused, probably just shop returns.

Apart from the fact that the Fuji refurbished camera come in a boxed marked
'Fuji Refurbished' you wouldn't know any different.

The cost including delivery was £175 (delivered next day) and Morgan
Computers are selling the identical refurbished item for around £210 inc
delivery.

Fuji's complete range of refurbished cameras can be found here:

You'd stick your drunken head under the cloth and fall asleep, everybodies
faces would set waiting for the picture to be taken. The Year of the Big
Grin would be born.

These Fuji (compacts) have a very good lens and a simplicity that makes them
very easy to recommend for technophobes.

Note the A405 on that page is a 2MP camera exclusive to the DSG stores.
Designed to fool some customers that it is a 4MP camera no doubt. Simply an
A205 with an added 4MP interploated resolution.

Try looking in Boots branches.

I picked up an ex display Kodak DX4900 last month in Edinburgh for Ł63.00 It
has 4.0 mega pixels, optical zoom and the quality for that price is
excellent despite it being an 'old' model. Its miles better than my last
digicam - Pentax Ei 100.

I was told that the Boots digicam displays are being upgraded and if you
time it right you may pick up a bargain.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to investigate the Canon and the Kodak on my next visit into town,
and then most probably make the purchase online after I've done all my price
comparisons.

Thanks again,
James.
