I can only speak for ADSL via BT - someone else may be able to talk abut
cable if that's an option for you...

When the base cost (what BT charges them per customer per month) for
ISPs per customer is around Ł14-Ł15 before business overheads such as
customer support, maintenance equipment and premises etc... I doubt
you'll get anyone cheaper that isn't likely to go under sometime soon.

I'm on Plusnet at Ł18.99/month and it seems cheap to me.

If she only wants to surf, but wants an 'always on' connection, then
www.Metronet.co.uk is very good value, at Ł11.75 per month. The cost
depends on usage, but there is enough allowance for plenty of surfing,
included in the Ł11.75 price.

Demon's current offer until 31st Jan is 24.99 a month, no activation fee
and with USB modem supplied (you will need a software firewall on top of
that to keep the computer secure - a simple one comes with Windows XP, a
third party one will be needed with earlier Microsoft Operating Systems -
this is par for the course for all ADSL connections).

Demon are also introducing spam filtering to email in 'early 2004' at no
extra cost.

See

http://www.demon.net/broadbandoffer

for info.

Avoid Assholes OnLine.

www.fast24.co.uk currently have a half price activation deal on for 1mb
broadband at about the same price for half the speed with AOL...

I'm using their service and can recommend it although some people have had
problems.

Don't knock Tiscali's Ł15.99 offer too much, it's a 150K connection and
therefore 'not proper broadband' but it's reliable as far as I've found. And
there is no activation fee.

Do you still have to use AOL's crappy software? That would certainly be a
reason to avoid them.

AFAIK yes, along with their "fantastic" modem.
