I'm looking into adding on my 17 year old daughter onto my policy. She's
currently learning to drive so only has a provisional licence. My insurers,
Royal & SunAlliance are quoting me £616.77 to add her on (for just under a
year - policy expires Sept 05). I just wondered if there was anywhere
cheaper than this that someone could recommend or is this the going rate?
Thanks.

can't say if it is a good price as that would depend on a number of factors
like make, value, area - but it doesn't seem bad. Try Norwich Union - they
are usually good for high risk and younger drivers.

I went through Liverpool and Victoria, they were sympathetic to the fact
my son wouldn't be driving the car that often and it cost me less than
£600 total, Corsa 1.2 Trip, plus they offered 2 years NCB if I renew
through them next year.
BTW, I have zero NCB and 1 claim in last 5 years.

....on the first occasion, with most certainly increased insurance
policies in future relating back to the conviction.

I appreciate the irony of your comment of course.

A class diesel quote £1800! If he buys a new (pre-reg)Toyota Yaris diesel
quote now £600 this is with a 17yr old named driver. If he buys the Yaris
sells the Merc and taking into accont of the saving in insurance he will be
£1000 better off this year!!!

Ring cis insurance. I got put on my fathers without me even passing my test
for a totall of £400. He already had it insured with an any driver policy
which cost him £300 but that was only drivers over either 21 or 25(i cant
remember which). We had to pay the extra 100 to make it any driver at all.
No one ever beleaves this when i tell them ands i reckon i probably wasn't
covered put i crashed 2 times and both times i got payed out. My voluntary
excess was £500 though but my fathers remained at £150. Car was worth about
2000. I'm still insured on same policy with them aged 20 and i've got a
group 10 car for £600 with the car been worth about 7000

I used to be with Norwich Union Direct, who were cheap when I was 19 and
had one year's NCD. Two years on and at a different end of the country,
I'm with Churchill.

You need to somehow find out what the primary factor in price for each
insurer is. For Norwich Union, it cost me very little to upgrade my
1.0l Mk2 Polo to a 1.8l Golf. Other insurers will all but ignore area;
some will place little weight on age. Norwich Union were also
reasonable for adding me on as a named driver to another policy.

Having sung the praises of Norwich Union, I would NEVER go with them,
because their Indian call centres are *useless*.

I'd say that was reasonable, given her age and licence status.

For my first year I was with Tesco (£1441 pa), then Halifax (£860), and now
First Alternative - http://www.firstalternative.com

Masterquote (independent intermediary) are quite good too -

You could try Tesco. I recall that they only wanted about an extra £3-400
to add my 17 year old daughter on to the insurance of my old banger (my 2nd
car - wife has her own). Seemed pretty reasonable given she could have had
more or less sole use of car. Mind you I've got 60% NCB so it may be more
expensive from scratch.

Avoid Liverpool Victoria like the plague! Not cheap and dismal customer
service.
