I got a camera last year and was charged nothing, but that doesn't mean
to say it's normal.
They're not UK based, not sure if it's France or not. They have a load
of sites, Dutch, German ..

They're French I think. But when I bought something from them last year I
paid UK VAT and stuff, so I assumed there was no customs.

Think they are French, and as France is within the EU, you can buy from them
as if you are buying from the shop down the road, import duty only kicks in
when buying from outside the EU.

They have a store in Fulham Road, London where you can order and pick stuff
up from so perhaps they can dispatch within the UK as well. When I was
looking for a camcorder, I didn't find them any cheaper because they slapped
on extra charges for a warranty when you went through the checkout which
negated any saving.

Yes, they are a French company.

Nope.

Be careful with Pixmania. They have an appalling reputation for after sales
service. They are also not cheap for memory cards/ consumables etc.

You might also want to consider www.7dayshop.com
I bought a whole load of Canon gear from them earlier this year - all orders
came through on time. One of the lenses had to be returned - replaced with
no problems at all.

Just had a look at the cameras available at 7dayshop.com an they seem to
have a grand total of 15 different cameras.

I've bought a few things from them, including a digital camera and a video
camera. They're very good.

Surely, you can remove from the basket/checkout the extra garantee they are
trying to sell... A lot of online shops are adding extra garantees on
checkout, but I have never seen a case where it was mandatory...

Their main operations and wharehouse are indeed based in France, but they
can still provide next day delivery (tested). I bought twice from them and
never had an issue (although I didn't have to use after sales).

FYI:

0870 Number/National Rate Numbers
These numbers give you a 'national presence' and are particularly useful if
you have a customer base that would normally ring a national number.

****0870 numbers are billed to the caller at national rate regardless of
their location in the UK and in certain circumstances can generate a revenue
stream. ******
