The are the crappiest most incompetent provider ever. And thanx to npower, who sent me a gas bill for £1,800 + , then charged me for units Id not used, not only I had not used them units, but they charged me for 1000 + units I did use and paid for with British gas.
Luckily I have a keen eye, a partner who hoards old bills, and I don't have access
to unlimited amounts of money, and I wasn't paying by direct debit.
They now send me regular bills telling me how much I owe (approx £1,500 according to them) and that legal action will be taken if it not paid for immediately....So, yes I've called them on god knows how many occasions, 'we are sorry, we will rectify it, we will send someone out to see you' and they NEVER have, no matter how many times I have demanded them too.
So I tried to change provider, you'd think that would be a reasonable request? but with an unpaid bill of £1,500 no service provider will come anywhere near me until this matter is sorted out. I'm sooooo angry with npower, and what's more frustrating is that I still have to use a service that is utterly ******* **** and pay for the privilege !!! GGGGRRRRRRRRR!!!
Anyway, sorry for the rant! I wanted to change to Atlantic too, as they seem to offer the best prices, if I was you, I read some of their reviews on the internet (google search) and see what people who use this service have to say about it. Good luck, and keep a record of your meters numbers from when you switch, incase 5 years down the line they try and tell you the never charged you enough from the start.

Wow, that is amazing. Glad that problem was sorted quickly.
I wish NPower would do something like that, I cant tell you how many times I've called, give them exact meter readings and they promise to send me out a new bill, but then a final demand turns up instead. They really are a useless incompetent company. I'm just lucky that my partner had his final British Gas Bill..the meter reading on that 5 years ago was about 3115, and now 5 years later NPower reckon our meter should have started at 1445 , I am lucky we have the proof they are wrong. I hate the idea that they have probably ripped others off in this way!!!
As for Atlantic, they are the ones who reckon they can save me the most money (over £100 on both gas n elec) It always makes me wonder what the catch is.

I checked the unit rates and standing charges latst week to ensure my
supplier is still competitive, I was suprised to find that my rates we
the best rates around on both Electric and Gas. They are also pretty
good, I have never had any problems with them. It's a online only
service (hence the cheap rates), you don't get paper statements, and all
support is done via email.
I'm with Amerada Online. (www.amerada.co.uk)

Copywight 2003 Elmer Fudd. All wights wesewved.
I have just transferred to Atlantic Electric & Gas for gas. The transfer
went smoothly. For me they are the cheapest supplier. I did find the
customer services call centre had fairly long queues on the two occasions I
rang them to clarify a couple of ponts (0870 number too). They failed to
answer two emails I sent them. Sign-up Online for the best tariff. Theyl
make you wait a full year before you get the 8% Direct Debit discount so you
are effectively tied to them for a year at a time, although this is of no
consequence provided their rates remain the best.
I found it slightly cheaper to use Basic Power for my electricity supply.
They have a very straightforward tariff. Just cheap standing charge and unit
payments with no complicated Direct Debit discounts etc. They have an
un-usual payment system where you pay monthly in advance by Direct Debit and
the amount reflects your extimated consumption for that month. i.e. you pay
more in winter months than in the summer. The transfer to them went smoothly
and Customer Services answered promptly (0845 number).
Regarding the no standing charge tariffs, those companies that offer them
charger a much higher tariff for the first batch of units in each period.
Over the year this is usually equivalent to having a standing charge of
about the same amount as the companies standing charge tariff. Unless you
use a very small amount of energy the no standard charge tariffs are not
significantly different in coct to "normal" tariffs.

It is a similar situation what's happened with me, someone came to read the meter regularly, but Npower still estimated our bill. They estimated at £7 a month, I complained at that for 2 years, but the estimates kept coming in, till I stopped paying by DD and got a payment card so I could pay a more realistic figure myself... I knew I was heading for a big bill if I didn't take it into my own hands. So for the last 12 months or so, they have had £50 a month off me, and this is where they have seriously messed up,
It seems that because they are no longer getting paid by DD they have looked into my case and worked out I still owe them £1,300+ (assuming I've paid off £500 so far). there is no way I could have used that much gas ... I mean if I used £300 a year for 6 years and never paid a penny, then maybe I could believe that I owed £1.800 12 months ago, but they have had so much money off me, and yet they still wont sort it out. I really hope to get some kind of compensation for this, it annoys me that they can happily get away with this kind of thing. They almost certainly would have convince me that my original meter reading they started on was wrong if it wasn't for my partner finding his last BGas bill. Makes you wonder how many more people they have ripped off in this way.
Joolz (ergh apologies for another long Npower rant,..it never starts out that way..honest.)

What rates are you paying, I did compare mine to Atlantic last week, but
my current supplier was cheaper.
My rates with Amerada are:
Gas: 1.1991 p/kwh, 28.36 £/Year Standing Charge
Elec: 5.0295 p/kwh, 43.11 £/Year Standing Charge

For gas I use Atlantic Electric & Gas:-
1.298 p/kwh, £43.68/Year Standing Charge
Prices include VAT and take in to account the 8.5% Direct Debit discount.
This is their Online Sign Up Standard Tariff
For Electricity I use Basic Power:-
4.7 p/kwh, £54.77/Year Standing Charge
Prices include VAT
This is their Standard Tariff
I'm in the Southern Electric Region.
uSwitch http://www.uswitch.com/index.asp?ref still shows these as being the
best rates for me with an annual consumption of 22,000 kwh gas and 4523 kwh
electricity.
When they were available Amerada did offer good rates but about 3 or 4
months ago they stopped taking new customers. IIRC they were taken over by
Scottish Power so maybe the Online Energy tariffs shown for Scottish Power
are the replacement for the Amerada rates.
BTW do your rates include VAT and do they take account of the recent price
increases?

yep inc VAT, and I just checked them prior to posting, so that's upto date.

That was a quick reply Mark :-)
Can you confirm the current position on Amerada. i.e do they still exist in
their own right and/or are they accepting new cutomers?
On the uSwitch site, Amerada show up on the list of "your current supplier"
but they do not appear in the results tables.

from the Amerada website:
Gas and Electricity - Currently it is not possible for new customers to
switch their electricity or gas to Amerada. Amerada is now part of
Powergen who offer competitively priced electricity and gas as well as
the convenience of managing your account online. For more information
visit the Powergen website here.

Ah, so it was Powergen not Scottish Power who bought Amerada.
So it seems the Amerada best buy prices are no longer available.
I suggest you keep a close eye on the prices you pay as no doubt Powergen
will "rationalise" the Amerada tariffs eventually. This happened with NPower
as they bought other suppliers, hence my recent move.

Not much advantage in having a choice of suppliers then, if the smaller,
cheaper options, just are going to be taken over by the bigger companies,
with the resulting price rises. Probably a case for the Monopolies and
Mergers Commision, if that still exists.

You can then ring a company called simply energy, who will tell you who the
best provider is, for where you live, and amount you use. You also get some
cashback for using their comparison service.

See the beginnings of my family tree at
Powergen are now moving their Amerada customers to the powergen
tariffs. For most amerada customers, this will mean a price hike of
about 20%, which is not to be sniffed at... try comparing the powergen
price using www.unravelit.com and you'll see how much this take over
will affect you.
cheers, dave...
I assume you will notify me before doing this, and give me the chance to
go elsewhere...
Not YOU personally.. I meant to say. I Assume THEY will notify me....
I have done some checking, and it seems I can't get anywhere near my
Current Amerada prices for Gas and Elec.
The closest is Atlantic Electric and Gas, which works out about the same
for gas (with £20 more a year standing charge), and slightly more for
electric.
Anyone know any companies that will match Amerada's old pricing, and
wants my buisness????
