Yep. My new spam-catcher address is at yahoo.
That was my *permanent* address, to be kept between ISP changes.
But there's plenty of alternatives; see

To respond directly, there is no "___" in dave...@hotmail.com

I can only answer for myself. I switched from Hotmail to Yahoo
immediately upon learning of the purchase by MS. I did that
because I think MS is too big and has too much influence over the
PC and PC software market for our own good (I'm not going to
argue the anti-trust issues). Yes, I buy some MS products because
they are the best available for my purposes. But when I have the
choice, I'll avoid anything that can assist MS in its
unrestrained growth and influence over the marketplace.
d.
Their 'unrestrained growth and influence', is precisely because people
like you insist on using easy to use operating systems (Windows 95), and
continue to use applications running under it. If you don't approve of
simple GUI interfaces, may I suggest you refrain from purchasing Microsoft
products and instead acquire Apple based products, or perhaps UNIX, (any of
the 13 different flavors ranging from POSIX, AIX, SCO, Solaris, etc), or
maybe run VMS on a RISC platform.
Bill Gates earns his keep, a lot of petty people are jealous of his companies
success and ability to quickly adapt to changing market conditions. It's too
bad, his competitors instead of whining and asking for government involvement,
aren't engaged in producing some new innovative product to dethrone Microsoft.
The same way Microsoft dethroned IBM, Wang, etc.... it's an issue of what the
public wants and buys... so far the public wants Microsoft ... you don't want
to buy MS products ? great ... go to UNIX or VMS ... which I run anyway for
mission critical apps.
Free country, God Bless Bill Gates ... he embodies American capitalism and
ingenuity at it's best. Until someone else comes along with something better,
his company will continue to flourish.
As far as Hotmail goes, I would be interested in knowing why Microsoft
felt the need to acquire Hotmail? It is (virtually) a free service as
it is run now. (advertising supported, probably) I don't see how
Microsoft could hope to gain anything, financially or otherwise, by
purchasing Hotmail, unless they intend to use it as an advertising
platform, running their own banner ads on the hotmail web page. But who
reads those ads anyway? I still don't see a good reason to switch from
Hotmail to Yahoo, but Hotmail and Yahoo are virtually the same anyway,
right? Who knows, maybe Microsoft will purchase Yahoo next. -Dave

Bzzzzt. I was asked a question and I answered it. Is it some
disability that you have which doesn't enable you to permit
others to have opinions which differ from yours? I didn't
complain about MS. I simply changed my address because that's
what I wished to do. I was asked the reason and when I gave it
you attacked me because you think differently. Who cares? Into
the filter pit you go.

Bravo!!! Well said. All of these people bashing MS would be barking a
different tune if it were Apple or IBM running the show. They had
their chance and they fumbled the ball as it were due to their own
greed. As it stands, you, me, or anyone can write a "Windows" program
and profit from it. This would not have been the case if Apple or IBM
won the GUI wars. They wanted everything, every piece of software
written to come from them and them alone and that was their downfall.
To hell with them.
Sure "Windows" has it`s problems as I`ve got a tape back-up sitting
right in front of me, but the progress MS has made in refining and
correcting bugs, IMO, is outstanding considering the small length of
time "Windows" has been on the market. Because of "Windows", ANYONE
can afford/opperate a pc which in turn has led to the brutal price
drops we`ve recently seen. Hell, it took television 30 years to make
it to as many homes. MS rules because they are the best o.s.
available.
As far as "Hotmail" is concerned, I kill-filed them long ago and I
hope Gates shuts it down completely. It`s nothing but a haven for
spammers anyway.

My hunch is that Hotmail's principal asset is a list of of thousands
of heavy internet users. Had they wanted to, Microsoft could have
duplicated the service on MSN in less than a week, but that would
have given them mostly people they already know about. This way
they get the real email address of every recipient of a Hotmail-
generated posting.
I'd look for them to put some HTML in the Hotmail pages that
foul up Netscape browsers, put up a banner that says "Use IE4",
and so add to the pressure on Netscape.

Nope. At least not for me.
I signed up with hotmail using a usa.net address.
That's one of the nice things about these free e-mail accounts - I had to
give out my real e-mail address once, long ago. That was two ISPs ago. I
did it that way just to foil spammers; if any of those starts getting too
much spam, it gets cancelled and I establish another. The one I still have
that gets forwarded to my current *real* address is never used on usenet or
given to anyone I don't know personally.

Wouldn't surprise me.
But there's dozens of similar services at
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/3969/isp.html
Don't forget that if people want to actively avoid giving their
custom to Bill Gates, and try to discourage others from doing so,
that's also a feature of a free marketplace. Capitalism, that
cruelest of all mistresses, works in both directions.

Since then, in the last month or so, service on Hotmail seems to have
deteriorated noticeably... longer wait times, etc. Perhaps Bill decided
to replace the reliable UNIX servers with NT ones.

Oh, give me a break. Microsoft bashing has become so tiresome.

I know, it's a real bitch, but SOMEBODY has to do it.
Since I switched to linux maybe 3 months ago, it hasn't crashed once,
unless you want to include the stupid mistake I made that locked out the
keyboard and mouse -- everything was running fine, I just couldn't
communicate!
Compare and contrast with win95, which develops strange burps and halts
and refusals and outright suicides at least once a day. Have to bring it
up once a week or so now, and sure wish I didn't...
