Kansas Grad Student Falls Victim to Sodium-Azide Poisoning
LAWRENCE, Kansas - A second sodium-azide poisoning case is being
reported by a university in as many weeks, as a University of
Kansas graduate student arrived for treatment, following Harvard's
late-October announcement that six lab workers drank coffee
tainted with the chemical.

Starting Saturday night at a Kansas University fraternity house,
Bill Joeckel will attempt to solve a mystery
Fraternity brothers have passed down stories throughout the
years, and chapter members invited Joeckel's group - which
includes members of Kansas City Paranormal Studies and Elite
Paranormal of Kansas City - in to investigate.
The investigators have searched various buildings in the Kansas

This time my return was prompted not by nostalgia but by
curiosity. No. 7 Divinity Avenue is a modern multi-story
academic building today, housing the university's Department of
Molecular and Cellular Biology. In 1959 a comfortable old house
stood on the site. Known as the Annex, it served as a laboratory
in which staff members of the Department of Social Relations
conducted research on human subjects. There, from the fall of
1959 through the spring of 1962, Harvard psychologists, led by
Henry A. Murray, conducted a disturbing and what would now be
seen as ethically indefensible experiment on twenty-two
undergraduates. To preserve the anonymity of these student
guinea pigs, experimenters referred to individuals by code name
only.
One of these students, whom they dubbed "Lawful," was Theodore
John Kaczynski, who would one day be known as the Unabomber, and
who would later mail or deliver sixteen package bombs to
scientists, academicians, and others over seventeen years,
killing three people and injuring twenty-three.
According to the conventional wisdom, Kaczynski, a brilliant
former professor of mathematics turned Montana hermit and mail
bomber, is, simply, mentally ill. He is a paranoid schizophrenic,
and there is nothing more about him to interest us. But the
conventional wisdom is mistaken. I came to discover that
Kaczynski is neither the extreme loner he has been made out to
be nor in any clinical sense mentally ill. He is an intellectual
and a convicted murderer, and to understand the connections
between these two facts we must revisit his time at Harvard.
Kaczynski told me that the Henry A. Murray Research Center of
the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, although it released
some raw data about him to his attorneys, had refused to share
information about the Murray team's analysis of that data.
Kaczynski hinted darkly that the Murray Center seemed to feel it
had something to hide.
Murray subjected his unwitting students, including Kaczynski, to
intensive interrogation -- what Murray himself called "vehement,
sweeping, and personally abusive" attacks, assaulting his
subjects' egos and most-cherished ideals and beliefs.
And it was at Harvard, Johnson suggested, that they first
surfaced and met. She wrote,
During his college years he had fantasies of living a primitive
life and fantasized himself as "an agitator, rousing mobs to
frenzies of revolutionary violence." He claims that during that
time he started to think about breaking away from normal society.

One of the most famous cases in U.S. history of academic
repression occurred in 1969 when UCLA philosophy professor
Angela Davis, a well-known international scholar against
oppression in all forms, was fired from her teaching position
because she was a communist. Ironically enough, Former Governor
of California Ronald Reagan once vowed that Davis would in no
way ever work for the University of California educational
system again, today she is a honored tenured faculty

Governor Ronald Regan wrote in June 19, 1970: This memorandum is
to inform everyone that, through extensive court cases and
rebuttals, Angela Davis, Professor of Philosophy, will no longer

Deadly chemical stolen from Waterloo researchers
Police are searching for 10 vials of a deadly substance after it
was stolen from a group of University of Waterloo students who
were doing research at a nearby river.
Students were conducting water tests at Moyer's Landing Park
along Grand River in Cambridge around 9 a.m. Saturday when they
noticed 10 vials of sodium azide had been taken from a cooler at
the research site, said Waterloo regional police

Stella and I had an evening out without the kids and decided to
hit up Manifesto again, this time incognito.
I spent a little time texting Abbey Ale trying to get her out of
her pj's and into Manifesto (or The Westside Local where we were
going later). On the drive over to Manifesto, Abbey had texted
"I'm already in for the night, I'm old and I suck". Since I was
driving at the time, I told Stella to text back "If you suck
meet us at Manifesto, if you swallow, meet us at the house".
Amazingly Stella did text that and amazingly Abbey Ale never did
come out and join us.
We had a good time without Abbey anyway. One of the bartenders

stand up and say they believe the death penalty for

MANHATTAN -- Kansas is lucky that a devastating wheat fungus isn't
threatening the state's crops yet. Researchers at Kansas State
University are getting $1 million from the U.S. Department of
Agriculture to keep it that way.
Barbara Valent, university distinguished professor of plant
pathology, is leading a group of researchers to study the wheat
blast fungus, a pathogen that has become a serious threat in
Brazil.
"We don't know if our varieties in Kansas are susceptible, so we
want to be prepared," Valent said.
The wheat blast fungus is a close relative of a devastating
fungus that has long affected rice crops and another fungus that
affects turf grass across the country. In the mid-1980s a close
relative of these fungi began affecting wheat in and around
Brazil, Valent said.
"It hasn't moved north from South America, but there's the
potential that it could," she said. "We don't know where it came
from or what effects climate change may have on it."
That's why the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Cooperative
State Research, Education and Extension Service is providing
$999,688 to study the fungus. The K-State researchers from the
department of plant pathology include professors William Bockus
and James Stack, and Xiaoyan Tang, associate professor. They
will be working with Gary Peterson and Kerry Pedley of the U.S
Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service

Now just a virtual "ghost town" with a population of less than 10,
Calista was once a happening town on a major rail-line that ran
between wichita and dodge city. at one time, calista had an annual
rodeo and the circus stopped as well. there was once a shoot-out on
main street between the kingman co. sherrif and a local outlaw, and in
the 1920s, a mass murder shocked the whole area when a hired hand
killed almost an entire ranch family except for a retarded son, who
alerted police that his family had been killed. the greatest local
attraction is a massive mansion from the old "sears ranch" (a ranch so
big that US 54 used to detour around it) located on private property
just west of town. calista can be found 9 miles west and 1/4 miles
south of kingman on the "zenda blacktop." old buildings that can still
be seen are an old blacksmith/auto shop, a post office and several
houses. the only active business in town is a small grain elevator
that is only open for about 2 weeks during wheat harvest. on an
interesting side note, the "official" name of the town is new calista,
because when the railroad came through, the entire town was moved to
its present site from about 2 miles west-southwest. all that is left
of "old calista" is a depression of where the mill-run was.

J. Robert Oppenheimer, the great physicist and one of the most

On October 16 & 21, 2003, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
(NRC) discussed several of the chemical safety open items with
Duke Cogema Stone & Webster (DCS) via phone. The open items are
associated with the Revised Construction Authorization Request
(CAR) for the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF)
submitted by DCS on October 30
Strategy for Preventing HAN Explosions ( Open Item CS-2 )
1. Staff is evaluating the adequacy of the design basis limiting
solution temperature and design basis chemical concentrations of
nitric acid, HAN, and hydrazine defined by DCS in its letter
dated October 6, 2003. Staff is evaluating these design bases
using the kinetic model presented in Enclosure 1, Table 2, of
the same October 6, 2003, letter. To perform this evaluation,
staff have estimated the initial conditions with respect to
several parameters, including the initial, or starting,
hydrazoic acid concentration. Of interest to the staff is a
postulated event sequence in which hydrazoic acid is present
initially at or near the design basis maximum value of 0.055 M/
liter in the stripping solution. This maximum value of hydrazoic
acid is proposed by DCS to prevent a hydrazoic acid vapor
explosion, an event which is identified separately in the CAR.
However, if nitrous acid is also present when the hydrazine is
added to this system, the hydrazine could react with the nitrous
acid to form additional hydrazoic acid, thereby increasing the
amount of hydrazoic acid into the explosive regime above 0.055 M/
liter. For the event postulated above, DCS clarified that since
hydrazoic acid is among the species destroyed in the oxidation
column downstream of the purification unit, and since specific
administrative principal structures, systems, and components
(PSSCs) (i.e., sampling) have been identified for this event,
the assumption of 0.055 M/liter hydrazoic acid concentrations as
an initial condition for the HAN explosion is not reasonable.
2. In response to a staff inquiry, DCS confirmed that the value
of "K" used in Enclosure 1, Table 2, of the DCS October 6, 2003,
letter is the hydrolysis constant for the reduction of Pu by
hydrazine and is equal to 0.14

Much abuzz about Herve This' and Pierre Gagnaire's "molecular
dish", a serving of something entirely synthetic, or so they say.

But, as one commenter points out, and some others have before,
here's part of the recipe:
Melt 100g of glucose and 20g of tartaric acid in 20cl of water.
Add 2g of polyphenol. Boil and add sodium chloride and piperine.
Bind the sauce with amylose. Take off the heat and stir in 50g
of triacylglycerol"
That sounds? industrial, doesn't it? Well, how about this:
In a sauce pan, combine table sugar and wine. Bring to a simmer.
Add lemon zest and bring to a boil. Season with salt and pepper,
and whisk in corn starch or all purpose flour. When combined,
take off the heat and add vegetable oil.

Postharvest (detached) and in planta (attached) fruits of pepper
plants, Capsicum annuum cv. Jejujaerae (susceptible) and
Capsicum baccatum cv. PBC80 (resistant), inoculated with the
anthracnose pathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were
examined using light, confocal laser scanning, and electron
microscopy to compare the cytological differences between the
compatible and incompatible interactions. In nonwound
inoculation of postharvest pepper fruit, resistant pepper
tissues showed a significant increase in the thickness of the
cuticle layer compared with that of the susceptible and
noninoculated fruit. Cytological features of programmed cell
death (PCD) were observed in the resistant pepper fruit with
postharvest inoculation, and these were characterized by
positive responses to terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-
mediated dUTP nick end labeling. The oligonucleosomal fragments
of DNA were confirmed electrophoretically as DNA laddering. The
PCD-positive responses occurred around the inoculation sites
early in in planta wound inoculation in the resistant pepper.
Nuclear modifications and structural changes of hypersensitivity
were also observed in the resistant fruit, including separation
of the plasma membrane from the cell wall, dilation of the
endoplasmic reticulum, accumulation of electron-dense inclusions
in vacuoles, and cytoplasmic vacuolization accompanying
fragmentation of the cytoplasm. These structural changes may
also implicate PCD-like host responses. In addition, in planta
wound inoculation resulted in cell enlargement and cell division
during the later stages of infection to form a periderm-like
boundary layer around the inoculation site.
