Five days after the Kursk sank in the Barents Sea, the U.S.
nuclear submarine Memphis docked at a naval base in Norway for
what a Norwegian military official said Tuesday was a planned
visit.
The visit by the Memphis comes as Russian commanders are pushing
the theory that the Kursk went down after colliding with a
foreign submarine, which would then have had to limp into a
nearby port for repairs.
But Norwegian Defense Ministry spokesman Brigadier Kjell
Grandhagen said Tuesday that the U.S. submarine, which arrived
Aug. 18 and is scheduled to leave next weekend, is not
undergoing repairs.
The visit to the Haakonsvern base near Bergen on Norway's west
coast was cleared more than a month ago and is not related to
the Barents Sea tragedy, he said by telephone.
Its purpose is "to take on fuel and supplies, and the crew is to
rest and recreate in Bergen." Norwegian media had covered the
submarine's arrival, and suggestions that the Memphis had been
involved in a collision were discarded, said Grandhagen.
The U.S. and British government have denied that any of their
submarines or surface vessels were involved in a collision with
the Kursk. NATO has also denied involvement of any of its
vessels.
Admiral Eduard Baltin, a former commander of a division of
submarines in the Northern Fleet, said Tuesday at a news
conference that two U.S. submarines are permanently present in
the Barents Sea and another one arrives when Russia is holding
naval exercises, as it was when the Kursk sank.
n Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev said Monday that military and
civilian leaders strongly suspected the Kursk had collided with
another submarine, which suffered severe damage but eventually
managed to escape, the New York Times reported.
He said a submerged shape was detected lying near the Kursk
about the time that Russian vessels were identifying its
shattered hull, on the evening of Aug. 13 — more than 30 hours
after Western sensors detected two explosions.
Sergeyev then ordered the navy to send a "hydrographic vessel
with more powerful equipment" to search for the mystery ship
near the Kursk, "but this object was not found."
It appeared from his remarks that in the early stages of the
rescue operation, navy officials were not only organizing the
attempted rescue of the Kursk crew, but also seeking a foreign
submarine that they suspected in the collision.

MEMPHIS is easy to identify - she's configured as a trials/test ship for
various new systems, and has some external housings related to this role.

And why not? Or are you unaware of the fact that nearly every nuke
ever built also has diesels?

If the stuff she is testing and trialing is clandestine operations
stuff, where better to trial and test it if you're in the final
stages?

No way, brother, what really happened was that a 300 foot long
Charcarodon Megalodon ran into the Kursk thinking it was somekind of new
age toothpick.
