The Mack is Back in Town

Dear Mack Institute,

A read a passing reference to John Mack in the paper.
I was trying to contact him, because it said that he was
open to unusual, paranormal experiences.

Paranormal experiences are a significant part of my life.
I like to think, like Mack - I am someone competent, not a Bigfoot
chaser. I don't really even believe in UFOs, but I would
never-say-never. Some of my experiences lead me to sense
higher forms in intelligence hovering around us- I don't
think "God" in any conventional sense because I am too rational
not to see the major logical holes in most of the basic,
traditional religious concepts.

How naive and innocent of me, to be trying to reach him.

Somehow, it did not surprise me to learn that Mack had
died unnaturally in an auto accident. Seems like a highly
familar refrain to someone like myself, who knows about the
suspicious deaths of many scientists and microbiologists.

I sometime theorize that the UFO phenomenon is a myth
simultaneously encouraged and ridiculed by our government's
propagandists. Why? Because it becomes a guilt-by-association
method to "discredit" conspiracy theory. Abductee stories could
also be an extremely convenient cover for Nazis-esque
human experiments of the kind that our government has carried
out on many thousands of subjects over the course of many
decades.

Our nation has a carefully cultivated myth to denigrate
"conspiracy theory" precisely because our nation's opinion-shapers
do not wish for the public to get wise to the bodies that are buried
in the national basement. It would be enough to disturb the order.

When I read of Mack's warnings concerning ecological disaster,
it certainly seemed vindicated by the recent BP oil spill, which
is probably as much a harbinger as it is a Chernobyl-level tragedy
in its own right.

Prophecy deserves poetry - I hope my small effort inspired by him
could begin to be worthy of the task. I tend believe that I am not
the author of the things that I write. Something beyond me,
moves me, to learn of someone like Mack, when the time is right.

degree from Oberlin College in 1951 and his medical degree from
Harvard Medical School in 1955

Dear Aliens,

We have gorgeous oceans, giant stretches of water filled with
fish, plants, and other amazing things like shipwrecks and
unexploded bombs from World War II. I may have failed to mention
this, but we tend to settle our disputes by killing each other
because it tends to be faster than talking. War is part of
nature, so if we act aggressively it's because we don't know
better.

It would be awesome if maybe you could teach us how to act
peacefully, we understand the concept, but generally fail to act
respectfully towards one another. Frankly it's been hard to
write this letter without using offensive language. Sorry in

Forty years ago we started something called Earth Day to try to

II. High Strangeness: Alien Abduction and the Zeitgeist.

For Mack the essence of the abduction experience is nothing less

chronological, physically-based interpretation of reality.

Mack's conspiracy theory, certainly more philosophically
provocative and Foucauldian than the more simplistic narratives
played out in , casts the U. S. government in the role of an
ignorant and frightened onlooker to an alien agenda which it
does not comprehend and cannot stop

John Mack's conclusion to Abduction, which speculates about the
intention and effects of alien encounters, is equally applicable
to The X-Files:

"The intelligence that appears to be at work here

NLU Pride Revived, But NLSIU Shuts After Harvard Law School

NLSIU Bangalore, very aguably (ask Nalsar or NUJS) the best
Indian law school which pioneered legal education in 1987 with
the introduction of the the 5 year integrated law course has
been shut after Harvard Law School opened in Mumbai today.

"We faced a severe identity crisis when we heard that Harvard

What I Learned From Strawberries

I live out in the middle of nowhere. It's a great transition
from the urban environment that I usually inhabit when I'm up in
Cambridge?it's quiet, it's peaceful, it's simple. But, more than
anything, it is so beautiful here. Everything is blooming, our
first vegetables and fruits for the year are starting to come in,
and the air is laced with the sweet scent of drying grass, which
the farms will begin to bale up and put in storage until the
winter in a day or two.

I've taken to running at night because the unfortunate thing
about summer here is that heat and humidity comes with the
seasonal abundance. But it's a great way to end the day, as I
get to enjoy the "nightlife," if you will. As the sun sets and
the stars appear, the ground begins to resemble the sky as the
fields almost literally sparkle with fireflies. The moon is so
bright that I can see my shadow (and my dog, who usually tags
along and, without fail, is up to no good).

As I observe all this, I can't help but be amazed at the sheer
beauty of God's creation. Man could never come close to creating
the kind of intricate workings that make our world so beautiful.
Everything bears the mark of God, and God has provided for us
and all earthly creatures in such a way that we can rest assured
that we will always have the resources to survive, even thrive.

"Then God said, I've given you every sort of seed-bearing plant
on Earth, and every kind of fruit bearing tree, given them to
you for food. To all animals and all birds, everything that
moves and breathes, I give whatever grows out of the ground for
food" (Genesis 1:29-30).

In a world of genetically altered plants, processed food, and
food we generally can't figure out where it came from, it's easy
to forget that God has provided everything we could ever need to
care for ourselves. I think we are mistrustful of God's
creations, and unfortunately so; as more and more evidence comes
out about some of the harmful chemicals we put on our skin and
in our food, the more I've come to realize that we need to get
back in touch with what God designed, which is perfect, and
unlikely to harm us if we only eat the right foods and make use
of His creation and the role He created for us within it.

One of my favorite things in our garden this year is the
strawberries. Not only are they positively sweet and delicious
straight off the plant, but they have taught me a lesson that
led me back to the verse from Genesis. A single strawberry
contains most of the nutrients we need to survive?and it also
has the potential to generate many, many more plants from that
one single strawberry. It reminds me that God has given us more
than just what we need to subsist. He has given generously, and
He has given us the chance to not only use, but also enjoy, His
creation.

We need to face the facts: nothing we create will ever compare
to the beauty of a single strawberry, or even a pesky weed that
you pull out of the garden. Not only are God's creations complex
in and of themselves, but they are complex in the way they fit
into the "grander scheme of things." Yes, God has given us the
power to create and do amazing things, but we will never even
come close to the beautiful simplicity of a single strawberry.

My very first year, I took Professor Gomes' Christian Bible
course, which is the bane of fingers-in-ears-lalalalala-I-can't-
hear-you-Christian-conservative parents everywhere (Gomes put
this far more elegantly, but you know what I mean?). I self-
identify as Anglican, probably the most wishy-washy denomination
there is, containing a whole gamut of priests who, among other
things, are the most openly non-celibate gay priest in any
denomination, simultaneously Muslim and Buddhist, the current C.
S. Lewis, respected leaders of the African church, etc etc

There are bits I'm personally not proud of - play-acting the New
Yorkery sophisticate dodging the hard questions, swirling cheap
wine in dirty glasses, trying on different affectations,
flipping through fashion magazines with a worshipful intensity
that made me hate my body, and above all, intellectual snobbery
and pure, blind prejudice. Prejudice that made me hold anyone
who called themselves Republican or tacked up a Bush family
photo in their dorm in mild contempt, when it was always my
philosophy to treat everyone as equal, beautiful, and valuable.
I guess it was not until I shipped myself off to my supposedly
dream-job in Manhattan itself that I realized this stuff would
crush me. The refinement, the condescension, the pretty phrases
turned at elite tables, the self-congratulation on one's own
openness and cosmopolitanism. The ironic conviction that you are
the most tolerant of the tolerant, and that therefore everyone
else should be like you.

I come from a long line of those who were dispossessed,
sometimes very obviously because of this artistic disposition.
My great grandfather, who goes by the label of "useless poet" in
the family oral history, eloped with someone else's betrothed.
To avoid being drowned by the village, they escaped from China
to Malaya, where they scratched out a living (or rather, she did)
selling cakes and writing name-poems on commission. They gave
away a daughter because they didn't have enough money. Their
only son was snatched away by a wealthy landlord.

So you see, between slavery, immigration, kidnapping,
debilitating depression, war, sickness, separation, homelessness,
spontaneous poetic elopement and the final, inevitable fall, I
can't help but sympathize with the poor, even though I was born
into the fortunate generation that attained comfortable upper-
middle-class-ness.

Growing up, I've often lamented that I missed out on the
zeitgeist of the 1960s.

For better or worse, I think I might have enjoyed the frothy
exuberance and moral drama. As an undergraduate in the early
1990s, I even once wrote a fairly maudlin poem that listed all
of the things I'd like to have done if I had been alive then. It
included such items as looking forward to the next Beatles album,
sneaking a sophomore out of her dormitory window after curfew

Robert McNamara- debonair, genial and still very lucid at age 87-
sat just a room away, before 700 members of the Harvard

courteous applause."

That was a mistake.

Robert McNamara is a war criminal.

A Harvard professor killed in London last week had been vilified
for his belief in the 'third realm'. His theories may not be as
mad as some think says Bryan Appleyard

John Mack, professor of psychiatry at Harvard, died after being
hit by a car in north London last week. I learnt of the death
via an e-mail from the Psychology of the Paranormal Network, an
academic group that studies aberrant "anomalistic" phenomena -
subjects such as telepathy, ghosts, clairvoyance and alien
encounters and abductions

I met him last year. I had called his office in Boston to
arrange a telephone interview, but it turned out he was passing
through London and would meet me here. One morning he came round
to my flat. He was a very slender, very dark man wearing a
flapping raincoat and carrying a large suitcase, both of which
seemed to be causing him problems. The permanent expression on
his lean, lined face was simultaneously one of distraction and
intensity.

He was struck, he said, by the coincidence of my phone call and
his visit to London. It seemed significant. We then embarked on
a three-hour conversation about the fabric of reality and the
way we have deceived ourselves about the true nature of the
world. He spoke very slowly and very quietly.

Using hypnotic regression, he retrieved what appeared to be
memories of, among other things, surgery conducted by these
aliens on their human victims. Hopkins had become convinced of
the reality of these memories and, when he met Mack, he invited
him to meet some of the abductees.

Mack met them and also came to believe in their accounts. In
1994 he published a book, Abduction: Human Encounters with
Aliens. It caused a media firestorm. A Harvard professor had
announced that these tales of alien abduction were true. On
Oprah Winfrey and Larry King, Mack said it was all true.

The Harvard authorities were appalled. They attempted to get rid
of Mack. But on what grounds? The belief that aliens had visited
Earth could hardly be grounds for dismissal

Long before aliens came into his life, Mack had always believed
something like this. He had first made his name with a Pulitzer
prize-winning biography of TE Lawrence - Lawrence of Arabia -
but his primary work was at the Harvard Medical School. He was
always a dissident. He campaigned against the arms race in the
Seventies and was a leading figure in International Physicians
for the Prevention of Nuclear War which collectively won the
Nobel peace prize in 1985. He also conducted a series of
interviews with people involved in nuclear decision- making,
including President Jimmy Carter, which led him to conclude that
it was "a whole boys' club . . . You couldn't question what you
were doing, that would be emasculating".

Harvard professor and psychiatrist John Mack was hit by a car
and killed in London on Monday night, September 27. After
meeting UFO researcher Budd Hopkins in Cape Cod, where both of
them spent the summers, Mack became intrigued by people who
claimed to have UFO abductions. He professionally analyzed many
of these people and found them to be sane and mentally stable
and thus became one of the first scientists to take alien
abduction seriously. His courage in risking his career by
acknowledging the validity of the UFO phenomenon was highly
valued and he will be greatly missed. While he did not conclude
that we are being visited by beings from other worlds, he did
feel there was definitely something real going on that we don't
yet understand and was especially intrigued by the messages that
abductees brought back warning about a future environmental
catastrophe, years before global warming was in the news.

After he wrote his groundbreaking book "Abduction?Human
Encounters with Aliens" in 1994, Harvard tried to revoke his
tenure. However, they were unable to do so without compromising
freedom of expression and research for all Harvard professors,
so he continued to teach. He published his second book on the
subject, "Passport to the Cosmos- Human Transformation and Alien
Encounters" in 1999 and formed the non-profit organization PEER
to further investigate the UFO phenomenon. He traveled to many
countries, investigating UFO reports. One of his most
provocative investigations was a film he made in South Africa,
where he interviewed several white children who witnessed a UFO
landing and a tribal Shaman who was abducted nearby.

Ever intellectually curious, one of the reasons Mack was in the
U.K. was to speak at a crop circle symposium. According to
reporter Linda Howe, "Yesterday afternoon in London, he spoke
before the T. E. Lawrence Society Symposium, in Oxford, England.
According to Will Bueche, Communications Director for the John
Mack Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dr. Mack's
presentation was so well-received that he was asked to do a
second presentation yesterday evening. Afterward, he went with
colleagues to dinner. He had called the family with whom he was
staying after 10 p.m. to say he would arrive at their home
around 11 p.m., London time. At 1 a.m., the London police
confirmed that John Edward Mack, M. D., had been pronounced dead
on a street near the Symposium's location, killed by a motor
vehicle."

Dr. Mack was killed by an intoxicated motorist.

group was there on his own as his partner was ill and couldn't
join. He was a Pulitzer prize winning author, and professor of
psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, well travelled and well
read, and he had an interesting way of looking at the world. In
other words, the perfect travel buddy.

As I got to know John, he told me his amazing story which I
believed only because John was such a straight shooter. Not to
mention that Harvard doesn't go too far into the 'wacky'
department. [Note: after John wrote his famous book on aliens,
he was kicked upstairs, and then fired. That's right: a tenured
professor of 30 years.]

Here is John's story. And, if you choose not to believe it, at
least believe the message.

Years earlier, John had heard some unbelievable tales about
people being 'taken up' to aliens in UFOs. He thought the tales
funny, and began gathering as many of these weird tales as he
could find. After a while, he began realizing that the stories
were basically similar regardless of the country of origin, or
the age or life situation of the folks telling the stories. He
became intrigued, and began taking his holidays to interview
those people who claimed to have been abducted.

Amazingly, all of the abductees described the aliens similarly.

Here is what John learned from Eskimos and Papua New Guinians
alike: That after each abduction, the person came back newly
resolved to help heal the environment ? folks who had never
cared before. Some became recyclers for their cities. Some
became sponsors of water regulation in their towns. Some, living
in villages, spent hours weekly cleaning up the village. John
said that the aliens said to each of them:

"Earth is the most viable planet in the solar system. We've come
to warn you that if you don't take care of it, you will lose it."
And then got their commitment to work on behalf of the Earth.

MONEY AND THE EARTH

I'm 'cheesed off' about what BP is doing to my Earth. I can take
it farther, and be annoyed about regulation and de-regulation,
about our Money economy that is willing to sacrifice all for the
Mighty Buck. [Note: I have a colleague who invented a car engine
that runs on water. One of the major car companies bought the
patent from him 20 years ago.]

But for today, I'm angry about the fish that are dying, and the
people losing their livelihoods, the wetlands that aren't wet,
and the sea that is gunky ? and the time it's going to take us
to not only clean up the mess, but to make it all right and get
back to what we had. I'm angry at how long it is taking these
idiots to fix a problem that should never have occurred ? not if
they cared about the Earth more than they cared about making
money

Where are the aliens now? Before John died in a freak accident
in London several years back, I spoke with him about where the
aliens might have gone. "It's scary, actually. They were around
for a couple of years and everyone had stories about them. And
then the stories stopped. The aliens must have given up on us
because we were on the losing trajectory. I wonder if they
thought it was useless to try to help us. I wonder if it's too
late to save the planet."
